I cried watching this. Not just the American or the Pakistani justice system failed her, but we as a culture failed her too. I am referring to the toxic tradition of Arranged marriages and placing all the responsibility on a woman to keep the marriage intact, even if it comes to the cost of tolerating emotional, financial and physical abuse. She was empowered enough to pursue a great career but was never empowered enough to walk out of a toxic marriage and leave her scumbag husband. Although Islam gave rights to women (including the right of walking out of a terrible marriage), none of which are actually realized and/or practiced throughout the Islamic world. It is indeed a moral and cultural failure. Pakistan has failed its daughters. And then we hypocritically say "Allah bus betiyon ke naseeb ache kare". But in reality no one takes practical steps to free women out of these cultural chains that shouldn't have been there in the first place according to Islam.

She was obviously a brilliant woman and a high achiever yet not strong enough to walk out of an abusive relationship in time. Instead, not only did she stay for a long time but had three kids with that man. She attended all those prestigious schools and received numerous accolades throughout her life yet didn’t have the courage to say NO to abuse at its early signs ? If thats really the case, it’s also a failure on her family and parents’ part for bringing her up the way they did. P.S no victim blaming/shaming intended here, but the parents were way too fixated on getting their kids/daughters married at an early age without thinking much of the implications, hurdles and challenges early marriages would bring about in their budding careers. Yes its good to get married sooner than later from an Islamic standpoint, but there's nothing wrong with prioritizing your career and goals to get somewhere in life while avoiding sin. The older daughter, Dr. Fauzia, herself once admitted in an interview that she won't recommend anyone pursuing medicine while being married. The mother was also reluctant to send Aafia to MIT knowing very well that most people in the world can only dream of attending that institution. So that kind of mentality also somehow reflected in their daughters' behaviors that they were willing to go ANY lengths to make their marriages work. Poor Aafia probably also tried the same but failed to realize that you can rarely change people, and abuse in a relationship only worsens with the passage of time.

Couple of questions that have not been answered yet - 1. What is the truth about the information that she had divorced her husband and married the nephew of Khaled Sheikh Mohammad? Her husband says he left her because she was dragging him into the path of terrorism. 2. How was she in possession of blueprints of Brooklyn Bridge and Empire State Building? 3. Why was her handover demanded in exchange of American journalist James Foley which was rejected by Washington? We all know James Foley was executed later. 4. Why were so many extradition exchanges offered by Al-Qaeda for Dr Aafia? She is a Pakistani citizen so ideally Pakistan should take interest in getting her back. 5. If what she had indeed was just her curriculum to built her institute, why did the rest of Islamic nations not show an interest in her plight? 6. If she is indeed innocent, why has her sentence not challenged by a single global courtroom of UN? 7. Lastly, why did UN not take up her case as pro-actively as they did for Malala?

say it as i see it says it all. when innocents get butchered because of their faith and the establishment itself unleashes the frenzied murderers. these are conveniently not called acts of terrorism, but heroic deeds.

Miss Fawzia only discuses her sister’s high achievements and portrays her as this meek docile saintly pious Muslim woman, very conveniently forgetting to address any allegations and evidences that are levelled against her. It serves her narrative and our people are eating the lies right of her palm.
