So if Mark Farner recruited a bass player and a drummer and started playing Grand Funk tunes, it still wouldn't be the same. There is no bass tone that could replace Mel's (on that 200 watt West Fillmore). What about Don's songs he sang? Mark is an alto, Don a tenor.... I love Mark Farner too and how he was the driving force but to say "no debate on this"...yada yada yada is dumb. There is plenty of debate and I'll take that Pepsi challenge any day of the week. It's a shame what happened but people tend to think with emotions and not logically. Mic drop time: Don basically started Grand Funk. Period. Just being logical. If I were a drummer in a band and my chief song writer and guitarist "accidentally" signed over his publishing rights to the shady manager, I would kick his ass out of the band. Don't care how old you were when you were signing contracts.

Sadly, Don Brewer & Mel Schacher have totally trashed the legacy of Grand Funk Railroad... they betrayed Mark Farner... and have maligned his name & faith... they have had to hire 3 musicians to replace 1... they hired an ex-Kiss guitarist to play Mark Farner's licks... and the one album only lead singer of .38 Special to sing his lyrics... and a touring keyboardist for Bob Seger to play his famous organ licks... if they had stayed with Mark Farner and toured every other year or so their chances of being in the RRHOF would be much greater (though who cares about the RRH of Shame... only it would be cool for the Fans who had to endure all the crap from critic's and Rolling Stone magazine about GFR...) ... Don & Mel conspired to cut Mark Farner out of GFR... they out vote him on everything dealing with GFR business (3 board members of their corporation... 2 vs.1)... everything they hated about Terry Knight doing to GFR, Don & Mel have basically done to Mark Farner... in the world of R&R, few have betrayed someone who made them Millionaires like Don & Mel have... Mark Farner wrote over 95% of GFR music & lyrics of their original tunes... I have no use for Don & Mel... they killed Grand Funk Railroad.
@russblack4432 жыл бұрын
All of that is true, but Craig Frost was a member of Grand Funk at one time in the glory days. Not one of the original three but a member none the less. So it's not that bad having him in the band. Not as sacrilegious as them needing two people to try and fill in for Farner,badly.
@АзнаурДжатаж-я8с2 жыл бұрын
And to make everything fair, it was Brewer who collected the GFR and found Mark. He also helped Werner to open up and take place in GFR! It was thanks to Don that he became a guitarist, and after all, he had never seriously studied guitar before, was a vocalist and played bass. He and Don are clones, it's like two bears in the same den, they will never agree...

Getting into the HOF was a big dream of mine for a lot of years and to realize what was really happenin' really left me with a bitter taste...very bitter...still. To see living legends die without being nominated to the Hall while at the same time artists from other genres were being admitted. I'm not taking anything away from those artists, but they should have their own genre specific Hall. If I were still doin' my thing and somehow got nominated I would refuse the "honour" and I would give them all that I've said here for my reason.

In 1970 I saw Grand Funk Railroad one week after the first live album. I was 13 years old. The famous billboard in N.Y.C. was still up and Jimi Hendrix had just died. His image was draped over the P.A. stacks. The mighty "Crow" played in the show as well. AMAZING BAND. Then the Allman Brothers who hogged the stage so badly that Grand Funk almost didn't play. When Don & the boys hit the stage it was utter pandemonium! The ball field at R.F.K. stadium had been policed all day so that know one would ruin the expensive turf. As soon as they hit the first note a crazy guy with an American flag ran out into the field with the whole stadium in hot pursuit. It was our Bastille day. Don's drumming just killed it! Great feel, in the pocket at all times and a great soloist! Wow! Mark Farner also jumped off the 15 ft high stage to help a girl who was being crushed by the audience. It made headlines in D.C. I am richer for this memory. On the drums, I followed in Don's footsteps with his method of drumming and toured the world myself many times over. Not that I am a big copy cat, but but I sussed the essence of his drumming communication and added my own craziness. It served me very well. Thanks Don!

Right on! I've been a fan of Grand Funk for pretty much my whole life. My Mom's younger brother was only 9 or 10 years older than me and he introduced me to some of the best music I've ever heard. Of course I dig the stuff Dad played on his stereo too, his music was 1950s radio, to rock-n-roll, to rockabilly, to classic country and what he called "country and western". I guess I probably like something outta every genre and every era. I can tell ya exactly what I was doin' when I heard Elvis had died (few days before my 10th birthday) but I really was heavily involved with the "hair metal" and "melodic rock" of the 1980s and that's quite a range. However, it doesn't even encompass all of what I like, let alone everything that's available. I think that most people probably have a more diversified taste in tunes than even they realize and I believe that's a good thing. The wider a person's horizon becomes, the more opportunity they have toward meeting interesting people which brings more opportunities and I just figure that the more opportunities a person has in life, the more opportunities they have toward happiness.

Saw GFR in '71 @the old Chgo Amphitheater. Mark, Don, and Mel made up one Great Power Trio. Don was Indeed a Powerful drummer, but let's face it - Mark Farner was the Frontman for the group. Without his guitar work, there wouldn't have been a Grand Funk!

The music business can be an ugly thing! Like conning your band mate out of his share of the band and ripping him off!

GFR are one of the most seriously underrated bands of their era. They were so talented and wrote great music but the critics of the time had them pegged as a sort of blue-collar garage band (not that there's anything wrong with that) at a time when the perceived hippest music was all about the psychedelic & political spaces. They made their song Creepin in an effort to show that side of themselves but they just never could please those fickle music critics who are often so wrong in hindsight.

There's a rumor that Don was in the Johnny Bravo episode of THE BRADY BUNCH as a record producer. Is this true?
@RiverDocs2 жыл бұрын
From everything I looked at I would say no. I think the actor that resembles Don very much was Paul Cavonis was who they might have been talking about. I don't know if youtube will let this link go here but I will try. Take a look and see what you think? He does look a lot like Don!! www.imdb.com/name/nm0147186/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_i11
