I have had a pair for over three years now. Love them! I don't ride a ton and I don't wear them if I'm not riding, so that's probably why they are still in great shape. I did not use the shift protector, I'm quite certain it would not last very long and it's really not needed. Maybe if you put 10k+ miles on your bike a year, you'd see more wear on the shoe leather. YMMV. When I got mine, it was cheaper to order them directly from TCX in Italy than from any US based reseller. This shoe is actually on sale right now at TCX with free shipping.
