TD5 Discovery 2 xyz gear position switch fault code P0705 video 2 of 2

If you own a Land Rover fitted with a 5 Cylinder Diesel TD5 Engine you may have already had an experience with the issue of the M&S green flashing lights coming on and that is what brought you to this second in the series of video's today, well help is at hand in this my second video. Here you can see first-hand what the xyz gear position switch looks like with pictures taken with a remote camera while laying on my back under the vehicle. In the UK the switch is under the middle of the vehicle drivers side behind the exhaust pipe. It is hidden from view so I had to use a remote camera and laptop to view.
The symptoms of the xyz switch failing mean the M & S green warning lamps flash, you may possibly get poor performance and the TD5 goes into limp home mode, the Disco will be very slow when pulling away from a roundabout and every time you go through reverse it goes into limp home mode unless you start it in Neutral.
The fault code OBDII test book says gear position switch incorrect outputs, the effect is limp home mode, lovely!
The Sport/Manual lamp is on and they are green cog or gear looking pictures.
Generally this fault can be quickly checked by putting the front wipers on and putting the Disco into reverse" This is one easy and quick test and the rear wiper should come on. If the wiper works the problem is possibly dirty contacts inside the xyz switch or a rusty connector block above it.
The Hawkeye code reader from Bearmach which I use, showed a diagnostic fault code listed as fault 14 P0705 position switch monitoring permanent. Now Code P0705 is an auto box gear selector problem and this code is also common amongst other makes using auto gear box’s.
The auto box goes into limp home mode, you are unable to go through reverse without M&S lights coming on. Stopping the Disco and starting in Neutral has been known to work and stop the two green m & s lights coming on. When the Discovery 2 TD5 engine has a fault with the M&S green lights flashing, the code Fault 14 P0705 position switch monitoring permanent or Fault 14 intermittent comes up on the Hawkeye reader I am using, this would point to the xyz gear selector switch circuit not allowing the signal pulse to get to the ECU from the xyz switch. the computer gets confused as the pulse sequence of 0 and 1 is wrong.
It’s been well documented that the grey plug connector of the XYZ gear position switch and the xyz switch body itself, both get water and dirt inside them and they both go rusty, in this video you can clearly see the problem on a 2004 model. The short rubber air con pipe tip discharges water from above this switch and water also drips onto the xyz switch connector. The general opinion I have seen on most posts, is that this water dripping causes the issue of sending intermittent confusing signals to the ECU red plug in the engine compartment next to the jack and battery. Watch this video and you should see the xyz switch and the connector and how inaccessible they are. You also need to re route the air con discharge pipe stub.

I left the XYZ attached and sprayed WD-40 between the cracks using the nozzle. Flashing M S gone and shifting correctly. Took 10 minutes to allow the WD-40 to evaporate!

I have a Discovery TD5 and I replaced the XYZ, but the problem still persists, such that if the car slows down, it switches to a stronger gear, which leads to the car slowing down significantly.

There is a bit of an increase, but sometimes it works down to m. s D The one on the screen also pulsates and I replaced it with a user, but the same problem. The changes are not normal and sometimes it does not work now after I raise the RPM to 3000.

The symptoms are as follows: At first the first gear slows down, then it changes between gears normally, and if I want to slow down the speed to 40 km, it returns to a strong gear and it becomes difficult to walk unless I increase the RPM.

I cracked the red head on the computer, there is no oil, I cleaned all the plugs, and I changed the xyz switch twice, but I did not find a solution. I hope to find a solution with you.

My Discovery 2 V8 Has got the same problem. Do I need to replace the XYZ switch?

Stuart, how can you get at the xyz connector? Do you need to drop part of the exhaust off as far as I can see?

On the TD5 Discovery 2, you have to remove the down pipe which is connected to the header
