Finally, my 02 was having that exact issue you described. First I thought it was the battery and I changed it twice and now I did a little research and that might be the issue

on most cars its called an INHIBITOR SWITCH,,,, seems you can drill the rivets and open it up, to clean the contacts from any minor moisture damage,,, maybe WD 40.. or contact clean spray,,, or you could use very fine wet and dry sandpaper,,, then put back together with nuts and bolts to replace the rivets,, and use a bit of silicone to keep moisture out,,, if it doesnt work ....REPLACE it,,, good luck..

Commonly called the XYZ switch, mine did the same thing I changed it out and bam fixed! I have an 03 Disco.

I have a Discovery 2 TD5, when acceleration is slow, it shifts heavier. What is the correct way to weigh the electronic palm?

I had this issue with my TD5. A liberal soaking of the XYZ switch on the left-hand side of the gearbox of WD40 helped. Also, check your battery terminals for a good connection. Since I did this, the fault has not returned. The SRS light is an airbag fault. Could just be the wiring.

The TD5 is different, you have to make sure the shifter is in park then on the switch the part that inserts on to the transmission needs to be rotated all the the way to the left. Also the battery needs to be disconnected, make sure you have the correct switch for your year and model cause the switch for TD5 are different. Make sure tired are chocked. Once all I connected, Turn everything on and should be all good. You were at high Rpms because the switch was thinking it was in second gear. That’s why it’s important for switch to be set to the left all the way and selector in park.

Hey Rover dude , I recently bought a 2002 discovery 2 . And I’m having a drive problem. It starts and runs and when you put it in reverse it’s good engages and drives in reverse but when I shift to drive it’s got nothing , doesn’t feel like it engages into gear at all feels the same as shifting to neutral . And will not move . Any suggestion to what may be a fix ? Thanks I would appreciate it greatly. I know nothing about Land Rovers . Been a Chevy / GMC guy lol but I really like the rover..

I have an 02 Discovery, been driving with the M&S lights flashing since I purchased the vehicle. first I cleaned the xyz switch but this failed to correct the problem, next I replaced it and still have not corrected the problem. would love to get the truck cleaned up and rebuilt but obviously I need to correct this problem first. any help would be greatly appreciated. Will that also cause a failure to proceed. I only have Reverse I can select sport mode and turn it off. When initial failure occurred I had all kinds of lights.

Yes the switch needs to be changed , you can’t go into any gear till it’s replaced and could also damage your transmission

Hello , sure the manual and sport green light wii start flashing and you Discovery will feel like your transmission is slipping or rev really high. Yeah because the XYZ switch on the transmission is bad. Try not to drive it like that it’ll blow your transmission.

It is in safe mode and acts like an electric car as there is no gear changing. You can get up to 80kph but accelerating is slow. Often if you drive then stop and turn the car off for 15 minutes it will correct the fault on its own.

Wow not good , I’ve never heard of that. The only thing it could possibly be is possible low fluid levels in the trans which would cause no pressure in the front trans pump and or torque converter. I would try to check fluid levels first. If not you may have trans failure.

hello ive just fitted xyzswitch to side of my td5 auto box when i got car it drove poorly i noticed i had no m and s lights on the dash plus no gear indecation of gear on dash if replaced switch still nothing it drove to 50 mph at 3.5000 revs wasnt kicking dow to 4th whats the problem im at the nd of my tether with it can you help please sandy

There is a switch on the side of your transmission where the shift rod comes out which is bad this needs to be replaced by a skilled mechanic. Note if you drive your disco too long in that mode it’ll kill your transmission.
