I'm a big fan of Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy and with the board made out of hex tiles and the 4X nature, it looks a tad similar but obviously with a different theme. I was a little skeptical about this game going in, but you've sold me a good way towards maybe trying it.

Mechanically, it's quite a bit different from Eclipse. I'm a big fan of that one, too.

Eclipse is a more straight forward territory control game. I think you have more ways to gain victory points in CoC. What's also nice with CoC, is the ability to attack opponents with culture to basically steal VPs.

Visually and in some other ways, CoC looks like it's in the same realm as Civilization, perhaps with more combat emphasis. It would be interesting to see the two reviewed together (Civ with the new expansion, as you mentioned).

I played the original Sid Meier Civ 5 or 6 times. Never could pass the obtuse battle mechanics. Overall, after 1 play, I really like this one a lot better

Thanks for the grand review, Cody. I've been waiting for this one for quite a spell now and your review has only bolstered that desire. Could you possibly comment about the level of player interaction in the game? I do prefer my board games to have a high amount of player interaction - do the mechanisms in Clash of Cultures support that? Is there a lot of scope for players to interact with each other, whether it's conflict, negotiation or bartering? Thanks again for the review! Also, what a salacious end of video turn around, in the words of George Takei, ooooh myyyy, Cody ;P

Ha! At the beginning of the game there is not a lot of interaction, as each player is kind of focusing on their own Civ. But about round three or four contact is usually made and then the amount of interaction is really up to the players. You can hunker down or engage with other players a lot. Some of the objective cards really promote interaction. Hope this helps.

It's really not much longer. I think when I played the original it was about 3-4 hours, and this one is too. I really liked the expansion stuff that this added. It would be hard for me to go back to the original without the expansion.

Thank you for this review, Cody! I was looking forward for clash since your original review. Sadly, copies of the game were mostly unavailable in Europe at the time... And now... now, I'm torn... I have a pretty sizable collection of 4x games (mostly space-themed, with eclipse 2ed. as my crown jewel) and civilization games (I love mare nostrum Empire!) and I don't know if I should get this game or a nicely packed Time of crisis + Expansion from GMT. I know they are different genres, but I'm trying to put some restrain on the fun cardboard boxes I buy... If you could have only one of these 2 games what would you keep? Sorry for the long comment, and keep it up!

I LOVE this game but have no plans to buy it as I own two copies of the original and two copies of the expansion. That said, the component quality of the new version doesn’t seem as nice as the original. I really want to make my own map of the Mediterranean for this game with starting locations based on the civs you’re playing with. Such an amazing game. Might be my favorite 4X game.

Actually, I feel like the component quality is a little better in this edition. The plastic units feel a little more sturdy than the original production, that I recall. Also, there is some streamlining with regard to a few mechanics that I really appreciated. Still, your point is taken, and I don't know that it is 100% necessary for people that have the original and the expansion. Thanks!

I can see the unit figure improvement but was talking more about the cards and tiles. It might be subjective but the artwork/style in the original seems nicer

I can't decide should I get Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition or Civ dawn + expansion... I think I'm leaning towards CoC, because it might have little bit more depth, but I might be wrong
