I really enjoy Awakening the Bear, but have not had a chance to play this one yet. Thanks for the review.

Go through the progrmmed learning scenarios of Awakening The Bear and the learning curve for Guadalcanal will become much easier.

Thanks for the review. I still rate Awakening the Bear 2nd as the best of the Conflict of Heroes series, and with the solo and firefight expansions elevates to classic status in my personal opinion. Guadalcanal will shine for me when the solo expansion comes out. That said, Storms of Steel 2nd edition will be fantastic. Guadalcanal I'm sure appeals greatly to those that love the Pacific Theatre, but I do miss the diversity of armoured vehicles in Awakening the Bear and Storms of Steel.

"Bonsai" are miniature trees. A "Bonsai charge" would be . . . not that terrifying. Its "Banzai", short for "Tennō Heika Banzai" -- meaning roughly "Ten thousand years [of life] for His Majesty the Emperor".
@TheDiscriminatingGamer4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to stop you from embarrassing yourself, right there. Obviously, you are unfamiliar with General Hitoshi Imamura's infamous "Bonsai" tactics, in which Japanese soldiers would hurl Bonsai plants at G.I.s during the campaign. This was what was known as a "Shame Attack," since it was widely known at the pride of the Emperor's domain was the Bonsai plant. By throwing these plants at the American soldiers, the Japanese correctly calculated that the United States forces would realize that they couldn't grow such wonderful foliage, and withdraw. And that was how the IJA won the battle, and why we're all speaking Japanese today.

Can you review Empire of the sun? 1941-1945
@TheDiscriminatingGamer6 жыл бұрын
Christian Rowbotham Maybe sometime down the line, but I doubt it. While the game looks awesome, it also looks like it’s a little heavier game than I generally like. We’ll see.

The Discriminating Gamer really how come ? Heavier in what way ? I'm trying to look for a great ww2 war game
@TheDiscriminatingGamer6 жыл бұрын
@@ACM1PT95 If you check out GMT's website, they have a chart that shows a game's complexity. This game ranks as "high'. Generally, I don't like to get into anything higher than the middle of medium.

So, have you ever done an intro list for wargames?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer7 жыл бұрын
Not yet. I've toyed with doing a light wargaming list in the past. We'll see.

I love the CoH system and I think its a good war game for beginners. that being said Awakening of the Bear is the one to start with. plus it has the solo expansion so you don't need an opponent ;).

I've been looking at this series because it was recommended to me as an entry-level game for new wargamers. Anything you would recommend more for a noob?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer7 жыл бұрын
The most basic wargame is something like "Memoir '44" or another game from the Commands & Colors system. Or even something from the Axis & Allies line. Tide of Iron is good, too, if you can find it.
@TonganJedi7 жыл бұрын
I've played those pretty extensively so I guess it's a good time to move up the ladder. Thanks!

I am an ASL player but the maps look fantastic and it looks like there is a smaller counter count and you only play on 1 map. I am interested how many counters in a large scenario?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer7 жыл бұрын
Douglas Pearson I've only played a few of the smaller scenarios so far. 6-8 each.

Just wondering, what are the entry level war games you'd recommend for us muggles?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer7 жыл бұрын
Ben Steer Any of the Commands and Colors games- probably Memoir '44 first. I just played 1812, which I really liked a lot. Tide of Iron for something more complex, but not out of control complex. And of course, Axis & Allies.
@TheBenjamoon7 жыл бұрын
Ah great thanks. I've actually just sold my copy of M'44 and pre-ordered 1754 Conquest, the sequel to 1812. Perhaps I'm ready for the next rung.....

After finally sitting down to play the Twilight Struggle app after already wanting Black Orchestra, I find myself becoming more interested in war games. Help! I can't be the guy in the corner playing games with tweezers. Please, someone play Dead of Winter or Battlestar Galactica with me... now if you'll excuse me, it's my turn in TS and I have a Coup to perform and a space race to win.
