Seems like it is Risk meets SmallWorld (both games I enjoy). I wonder if this could be played as a two-player game. Your thoughts? There did not seem to be anything in the mechanics that would prohibit that.

I have the old blue-box edition from 1991-92 (2nd edition, maybe?) and I always liked it. The two issues we always ran into were downtime and game length, especially with a full player count. We had a game that lasted over six hours one night. The card drafting at the beginning is new, but the rest of the rules seem very similar. Do you feel like either of those were an issue for you? Did 90 minutes seem like a realistic low-end?

Yeah- once you know what you're doing. I know earlier editions had 6 and 7 epochs, and this one only has 5. I think that may be a big part of it.

If I recall correctly, there are fewer epochs in this game. There are five in this one. So I imagine it means quicker games, if that appeals to you.

Thank you. I saw in other responses that it was 7 vs 5 epochs. That has an appeal to me, however, I struggle to see how 7 vs 5 change accounts for a 3-6 hr game becoming a 90 minute game. Please know I don't mean to be disrespectful. I'm seeking understanding. Do you happen to know if there are enough differences in rules and game play to merit an "upgrade".

That I don't know. I imagine playing time has a lot to do with player count, as well. I'm not familiar enough with your version's rules.

If you have armies in earlier epochs, they do count towards presence, domination or superiority. If you had a very good turn, in the next epoch, you may want to draft an empire that plays earlier in the new epoch

There are some superficial similarities, but the big difference is that History of the World is a FUN game.

I have the old AH edition and the Hasbro edition. I liked the minis from the Hasbro game however the color selection left a lot to be desired. Really, two greens, a dark blue and purple and a gosh awful yellow. With poor lighting and some color vision issue players around the table, this can be a big issue. The Z man edition pawns leave a lot to be desired. It seems chopping off two epochs should have been an option so the last two epochs should have been included. Adding a catapult. I can only say, hmmm. Needless to say I will not be rushing to pick up this version of the game I know the game can run long but this is usually the fault of some players who have the slows and a lot of unnecessary player interaction during play. You know the type. You should be doing this or that or attacking so and so. What I like most about the game is the hard decision of keeping or passing a card by considering not only the score but the strength of the other players holdings, the order of the card, it's strength and where it appears. Epic! One of my all time favorites

I will never listen to the Bee Gee's ever again. I also don't think you should go for a PHD in History, I mean its not you. I have the Avalon Hill version. I really enjoyed it since 1991.
