One of my top five, but I own two base sets and all the expansions, have printed the over sized hexes from BGG. We play the regenerations version that was on BGG, which changes the game for the better IMO. I also printed the borg BGG fan expansion. We use paperclips on the ship cards to track their stats and don't use the heroclix for anything other than color. If you get damage and go down a color, you just put it on that color, doesn't matter the stats, it's just a visual representation of your level that I need to see. It's very easy to look across the table at their cards and see where the paperclip is too. I agree that it's a two player game, but I have had fun at three and four. Which is why I own two base sets. Now I just have to find the time to paint those darn ships.

The one thing I will say that's not awesome about the game is that winning with the Dominion seems near impossible.

@@JohnSmith-pu3pm I have the dominion expansion and I cant figure out the saboteurs. If I put a shapeshifter over someone elses captain, can they replace that captain with a new one? Does that discard both the old captain and the new captain? How can the target player get rid of the saboteur?

I agree with you, I was in 3rd grade when TOS came out I think it was 63'. There was nothing like it before on TV, I was even a member of their fan club. So I love this game because it brings back memories and this time I can be apart of it. Its like playing a stream lined Star Fleet Battles with extras. My one problem I had was I had a Federation ship and landed on a tile that my ship was stuck and according to the rules could not move out, The way I handled it was I could not move out until the next turn and only go to one tile, Not sure if that's the way to do it. But works,

I have this game and the Romulan expansion, and I really, really, really wanted to love this game. I devoted hours to trying to learn the rules backwards and forwards so I could teach it (because that's what I would have to do if I ever got it to the table, and I'm not very good at teaching games), I printed a rules summary, index, and player aids for each faction. I made a large hex grid mat to make setup and tile maintenance during the game easier. I even painted all the ships and made a foam insert and card dividers so I could fit the Romulan expansion and the Dominion expansion (if I ever get it) neatly into the main box. However, I have only gotten this game to the table twice, and both times were complete flops. No matter how well I learn the rules myself, teaching this game is an absolute nightmare. The rules are so clunky and the components are so fiddly that any enjoyment we got from the actual game just wasn't worth the struggle to get there. I know there's a great game in here, and part of me wants to give it another try, but I really don't want to go through all that effort again. I think the only way I'll play this again is if I ever find someone who already knows how to play.

Personally, I don’t think the rules are clunky so much as the rulebook is clunky. I hope you get another chance because this is one I really enjoy.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Seriously! That’s my major issue with Wiz Kids. They really just seem to forget about successful products in their lineup in favor of new ones. Attack wing is another one of my favorites (fun quick play with my wife when the kids are down), and I had given up on them only to recently find out their revamping and revitalizing it. Hopefully something more will come out for Fleet Captains.

I really enjoy this game. I grew up watching the TOS in re-runs and the movies. When the game came out it was a bit above my ability to purchase. Fortunately, I was able to find a great copy of the game in 2018 (with both expansions) for about as much as the original game was priced. Being in a higher pay bracket by 2018 it was only logical I buy the game. The card and hex quality is a tad low but the models (toy box factor is high) are top notch. My opinion of your review: Logical. Flawlessly logical.

Once played a three-player game with the Romulan expansion and it was a blast. Total free-for-all, we loved it. Haven’t played this game in years, hate to say. Think that needs to change. I will never sell it though.

Totally agree with your overall assesment and final enthusiasm! - About the rulebook: Most of the card play questions you alluded to are answered in the official FAQ. Am not sure if the FAQ can be found on WizKid's website, but it's downloadable from Boardgame Geek. The only problem though with the FAQ (and it's annoying) is that it's over a decade old. As such, it's missing a lot of good questions brought up by the player base during all that time. - About the player count. Agree that it sucks at 4 players. BUT... add the Romulan expansion and it's an AWESOME 3-player game! And (I'm sure) add the Dominion expansion, and it NOW becomes a great 4-player game. (I say "I'm sure", because I actually haven't tried that yet, but I'm sure it's as I say)! :)

This is my question. I just got the game and both expansions. It looks like you can do a 4 player game that isn't 2v2. Has anyone tried that yet?

Such a good game. The three-player variant is pretty good though it makes some of the influence mission cards with specific requirements (control half the spaces on the board, etc) a little impractical.

Totally agree with you! Still a great game, essentially a season of Star Trek in a box. I bought it around the same time (2012?) and after a long hiatus we dusted it off about a year ago to play a couple of 2p games - still fun. The rules are very much tied to the theme so you can pretty much guess how to do stuff once you know a few other mechanics. My real criticism is the card and tile quality - I guess to counter the expensive ship sculpts. I ended up sleeving the cards and mounting/laminating the tiles. This is much more engaging than Ascendancy and absolutely drips with theme. Ascendancy is cleaner though and other than Twilight Imperium (3e) is my go to 4x game.
