The free versions are stable, well though out and fairly easy to use while providing top quality results. I was satisfied with them and the "limited" functionality :-D Even though these would have been enough for my needs, I bought the GE versions anyways, 'cause the devs need to live too :-)

For someone that is still a student and just wants to tinker around mixing and music production, these free plug-ins make it accessible and easier for all types of musicians

I've been using the free plugins for a few months and I am very satisfied with what they do. I will have no hesitation in upgrading to their Gentleman's Edition once I become more experienced in what I am doing. I'm retired and music creation has become my primary hobby. I would also like to thank Mike for his videos, I have learned a lot from them. IMHO he is the best, most informative presenter on the internet. I rang the thumbs up button twice ;>)

Great video demonstration, Mike. TDR's free versions are fantastic in their own right, but I think the paid versions easily add sufficient value to justify buying them, particularly if you're mixing and mastering for a living. $35 for Nova Gentleman's Edition, $25 for Kotelnikov GE and $18 for SlickEQ GE are great deals for very powerful sound shaping tools.

For around £32 (UK) I think the GE edition of Nova is very much worth it, just for the Smart Operations feature alone.

Great comparison walkthrough Mike - the paid versions are probably beyond what I need right now but I can see they have lots of potentially useful extra features for those with more experience - and at reasonable prices too

Im still new to this ,but it seems to me that people are going to more than likely going to grab up the "freebies" and not typically want to pay for Plug-Ins...Also EQ's get rid of harsh frequencies,Low and High cut,Compressors basically help keep levels in check,etc... The Plug-Ins that people WOULD be willing to purchase ,atleast in my opinion,are the ones that will help reduce workflow!!! Mixing can become a very tedious process,anything thatll help save ya a little time MAY sale okay....MAYBE!!! ITS PERSONAL PREFERENCE !! Thanks for all your doing Mike,keep up the great work and putting out EXCELLENT videos.. Cakewalk users such as myself need ya !!! LOL

Hey. I agree, partly. I feel like absolutely any workflow advantage is king. But there are a few (not many) that give a sonic advantage. Thanks so much for watching the channel man :)

I was using the freebies for a few months and then bought Limiter GE and Kotelikov GE editions to give back to the Devs. I watched a few videos on how each worked and they were above my pay grade. And then I sort of forgot about them when i got a Plugin Alliance sub. But a few weeks ago i won the bundle from Plugin Boutique and i've gone back to them. I love the Delta functions and metering. I haven't used Nova much. I use it on Bass guitar with SC kick. I also used to do it on my Rear Bus (Scheps technique) to carve out room for the vocal. But i use Trackspacer for that now as it's set up and forget. But i'll be using them more going forward eg Slick EQ is great as you say on Master Bus and Busses in general. They've got a new plugin coming out soon. So i'm looking forward to that.

I love the free versions of TDR Nova and Kotelnikov. They are both stable, extremely useful and packed with features which have often proved more than enough. Given that I love the free versions so much, I may buy the paid ones in case of specific needs for these advanced features and when I feel I need to upgrade.

What happened to the old hit the dislike button twice? Playing it safe after THAT incident? Love your work mate! Have been using the tdr stuff for free but after seeing this am seriously thinking of paying for some of their plugins. They could be used in some forms of electronic like trance or hard techno to try clearing some frequencies if you have a super busy mix that I don't think some mb compressors would be doing as cleanly.
@CreativeSauce4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not! Would pander to silliness:) Just mixing it up a bit (if you'll excuse the pun)! Yeah man I like your thinking, that SlickEQ is sweet for that:)
@nuvisionprinting4 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeSauce good to hear you wouldn't pander to that! I was actually thinking the nova to do that but the slick eq does sound better now you mentioned it. The mastering version also looks good to if it isn't the same thing!

Hey Mike - how about a Melda Production comparison (free / paid)? Also, I was just looking at their website and noticed they have a drum VST, which I'd never noticed before. It's very atypical of drum VSTs but look rather interesting.

If I can chime in here, you should look at the beyerdynamic headphones, they may be a tad on the pricy side but personally(and this almost always the most important thing) I find my pair indispensable.
@demetriuspaschalides46224 жыл бұрын
Thank you ! Awesome to see you reply ! Would be greatl! Ive seen a lot of S tier engineers mixing with cans so i guess its an option of you learn your gear and room acoustics. Much cheaper than treating the room . personally , i only want to do cover versions ..vocals piano guitars etc. Yes , beyerdynamic are industry standard great and somewhat affordable . But i found a "gem" . Audio technica m20x . Closed back and VERY close to neutral. 50 bucks! Mixing , tracking etc is great.

Hey Mike... Could the reverse compression be used to clean up a noisy mic, or guitar hum? I was mixing a raw file recently that had a noisy mic on the tambourine. I chopped up the track to get rid of the noise and left only the segments where the instrument actually played. Maybe this reverse compression is another option? Appreciate your work. :) You make sooo easy to understand.
@CreativeSauce4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense:)
@DaveChips4 жыл бұрын
That's reverse compression feels kinda like multiband gater/dynamic expander I had a quite muddy and long kick... So I used that reverse compression to remove that sound after initial punch of the drums

I love the TDR products but, I don't use them until the end of my mix and only on the final busses going to the main mix and I use teem very very subtle, KOTELNICOV is just all the time the last compressor in my master chain because it is so transparent

Great explanation of the GE features. I have been using the free version for a while. Without knowing exactly what all the differences were, I never got around to buy any. Nova is probably my favorite, but 35euros on sale now comes to 56$CAD, not that expensive, but not cheap either for a no profit studio where the small plugins budget is spread on more than one plugin! But I am thinking about it! :-) I do think, like you, that I can't fathom how or where I would use you some of the advanced features!

Well, I`m really insecure about that. On the one hand - right now they have a autumn sale and you get the full versions + a dynamic Limiter and the Masterversion of Kotelnikov for 100 bucks. Not much for great plugins and I always think, if someone does a great job, he should get his fair share. On the other hand: their free VSTs are already sooooo good, I don`t really need, what they offer extra in the paid versions. I think, I`ll buy them anyway, `cause they deserve to earn money with their great work. But I would`t need the paid versions ;)

Hey Mike, I was looking for vids on side-chaining using TDR Nova and yours came up. Learned some cool things about the TDR Nova GE that I had not known before - so thanks for sharing! In regards on how to use the 'reverse compression' - it adds "Upwards Expansion" similar to that of an Expander plugin. After watching you share the SC button that allowed for granular editing, it could be used on the source channel strip to give it a bump for emphasis while ducking the other track. It'd be an interesting setup..I've not tried that before. But it's nice to know that it is an option to mess around with. source: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3Srd6lqoryEj68

I’ve been using TDR's free plugins for a while and I'm very inclined to purchase the GE versions as soon as the brazilian economy becomes stable enough not to go bankrupt by the exchange rate. Guess I'll be using the free ones for a bit longer.
