I'm Samoan. They performed this in Cook Island Maori when I was in college in 1980s. Started off with Kia orana 🎶🎶 Always loved this song. Grew up around a lot of Maori and listening to lots of traditional waiatas. Always brings happy memories to me.

My brother passed away in NZ after being there for 3 years. He loved it and loved being there with his kiwi parter. He's coming back to Liverpool to be laid to rest and I'm going to play this at his interment with his partner by my side as a last NZ goodbye 😢

I grew up in the Waikato and BOP. I've lived abroad for 20+ years. I still love the songs and Te Reo I learnt as a boy. Proud of my land and people, there really is nothing like Aotearoa. Peace.

I'm Tokelauan,Rarotongan,Samoan and german. My Tokelauan is the most spoken korero spoken at home. Born and raised in Aoutearoa and find Rarotongan and Tokelau are the closest language to te reo. My nan and mum loved waita Maori because they understood word for word and would translate and sing these waita in their own reo. So beautiful.

Tokelau is closest to Samoan and Tuvaluan. Toke has some old consonants and the original proto Polynesian K which is found in Maori and was once in Samoan which is why Maori is understood to a degree.

Beautiful music and dance! I have been twice in Hawaii and enjoyed polynesian music/dance in the polynesian cultural center (Oahu), luaus, etc, and could discover this music. Everytime I heard/see this music/dance, it comes to my mind sea, wind, coconut trees, happy people fishing, singing and dancing. Congratulations to keep alive these traditions!

I remember back in year 6 whenever the Māori group got up to preform this. And at the last part of the haka, all the boys in the school would put their toughest Māori accent and sing along “RUA ANA TE WHENUA WHATI ANA HI!!” I miss that time
