This song is something that represents us as being uniquely kiwi. Many nations have their stereotypical songs. For example USA have Cotton-Eye-Joe and I reckon this could be our nation's stereotypical song, and here's why... We haven't thrown our indigenous heritage down the drain. Maori culture remains a big part of what represents our small island nation and we can be proud of that. But mostly, the haka our rugby team HAVE KEPT, absolutely solidifies a pure type of representation of our nation (even though we're now huge melting pot of multiple cultures). Conclusion: This can be the song that represents New Zealand music, uniquely kiwi.

Discovered this song on ANZAC weekend on RAGE Saturday morning, Love it, love the culture, found it inspirational and now play it regularly as a motivational song to start the day. In a few years time I hope to spend some time discovering NZ, having been there twice years ago for a short work assignment. Here's to you Bilsen, we had some great crazy times in the past and hopefully into the future!

Sadly that’s not Hui Kahu you are seeing. It’s a younger middle-aged lady who looks like her, but sadly isn’t. The lead vocalist for this song, the lady you see prominently in the iconic official music video for this song is called Hui Kahu (or ‘Nanny Hui’ to those who loved her) and she sadly passed away in 2012, just a few years before this performance. When Patea Maori Club perform (and they still do, updating with new members) they will sing live but sing ‘over’ the studio version, so you still her the original vocals, like Hui Kahu‘s voice. Here, another lady is mouthing her parts but isn’t really singing. If you Google search ‘ Hui Kahu Patea Club’ you will see she grew older, with eventually grey hair and had the same beautiful smile until her last days.
