You skipped straight to Kaiba and didn't mention that Yugi suicided resulting in his loss which was followed by Jonouchi begging Red-Eyes to attack him (because the dude was over but Takahashi made the monsters stay on the field) to unlock the box then the anime staff changed the effect of Death Meteor by adding the effect that allows the opponents monster to attack in order to make the Duel end in a draw.

In the videogame Yugioh The Sacred Cards, they actually used this detail from the manga. Just with the diffrence that it was a capsule of "generic" poison(Aka they don't specify what it is) instead of cyanide.(Or this may be an undocumented localization change, idk)

It's also possible that a cyanide pill wasn't threatening enough. Like, yeah cyanide is bad, but ultimately difficult to really show the stakes, as it just isn't visually as striking. Not to mention not everyone might know what cyanide is or is capable of, but everyone realizes that a big heavy metal thing will make them go splat.

In comparison to the manga, DM is a kids show (unlike the original 1998 anime) as the content was toned down and altered (depending on the time slot it had). It was not a kids show. Pokemon is a kids show. Its literally called a Kodomo series because the age group is 10 years old and younger. The target audience for Yugioh is teens and up. The Konami card game that came after the manga is for 12 and up in Japan. That is the age DM is targeting. Slightly toned down from the manga's dark contents. The Bandai card game before Konami had monsters eating humans with blood covered in blood. A sshole parents complained that it didn't cater to their kids that aren't the target audience.

Interesting in the Japanese version Kaiba just trows any card what happens to be Blue Eyes, even thanking the card for always being there when he needs it the most. Meanwhile in the 4kids version Kaiba knows he trow Blue Eyes at Rare Hunter

You got your filthy blood on my card." and then proceed to throw the Rare Hunters/Ghouls into the sea.

I mean, yeah. Plus I feel like the anime may be a bit crueler because she’s not under mind control and is fully aware of what is happening. In the manga, she dies and probably won’t even regain control before it’s over. In the anime, if that falls, then she will experience everything about it crushing her to death. It may seem cartoony, but thinking about it from a real life perspective, that has got to be a terrifying and extremely painful way to die.

Even back in Japan this would be too far. Guns were still illegal in Japan for your average citizen to carry, so it's like a fantasy to see people carrying guns on them, unless they're law enforcement. The pills, everyone has those. Overdosing is a real thing. So imagine putting this on animation. TV broadcasters wouldn't accept it.

I think this was probably the best decision. Imagine parents walking in, or kids tuning in mid episode (which happened a lot since this was on live television) and all you see is that she has a pill between her teeth, the context gets left behind, but for a storage crate, it makes sense, you see it, you understand it, and it doesn’t need much explanation. You get it instantly. I think this was the best choice for censorship and for actual story telling when translating from a written to animated medium.

It's probably because the pill would not have been seen as live threatening by some watchers, especally children, who don't know what that pill does, the container just made the situation more "threatening" in some way. Secondly they wanted to avoid bringing pills/drugs into the anime and changed the scenario just like they erased all the guns that where in the manga.

Because it actually gives Kaiba more legitimacy in what he does when he throws his card at a thug. In the manga, the whole Anzu having a cyanide pill is entirely forgotten until Anzu just snaps out of it. In the anime, Kaiba legit ends up being the one to save her.

I think it could be stupid, sure, but I also think that they found a way to use a concept that existed to avoid showing children a show where there are litterally hundreds, if not thousands of deaths from a children's card game lol

Notably, this duel in the dub doesn't have much about it changed from the original version. Given how all of Marik's previous attempts were focused on sending Yugi and/or The Pharaoh to the Shadow Realm, the fact he's resorting to something like this better highlights how Marik's _really_ off his rocker now. Doesn't hurt that they make it explicit that he wants _a body_ to drop, and he's not all that picky as to _whose_ it is.
