One just never knows what becomes available. I've just ordered off fleabay a s/h tentelometer with a range up to 400gm, minimum of about 10gm, mid range value of 100gm. Perfect range for tape decks. Even so, I don't know when I'll get to adjusting the X-2000 to be spot on correct. I'm glad to know that I will eventually make it perfect. Brakes will need to be set as well. Also, a proper Cal tape is ordered and on its way. BTW, I have got the deck working (almost) perfectly but you'll need to see all the videos to see how: This is without a cal tape or tension meter. :-)

There are points which I will make in the videos to come but one thing to note here is that the flywheels for the 2000M are the same size. Same part number! That means that both capstans and pinch rollers rotate at the same speed. There is no faster take-up capstan to pull it through. This mechanism seems to rely entirely on the torque of the back tension of both reels to keep the tape tight on the heads. More discussion to follow.

Actually the Owner's Manual says that they aren't the same size and that the 2000M has 2 slightly different speed capstans. I don't see how. I need to measure the diameter of the capstans and flywheels but that means pulling it apart again. It now works so I'm reluctant to do that. See later video.

Looks like mine at the moment. Going to replace the belts.

Hello! I am your subscriber! I recently bought a TEAC X 2000m in Germany, a very good device! But there is a problem! It turns out that it now works only at 19 and 9 speeds! But it was made for 38 and 19 speeds! I removed the back cover and saw that it has only one belt! Please write, maybe this is the problem??? Thank you, with respect, Nikita!

Hi, probably one of two possibilities 1/ it is not a M version 2/ it has been modified to run at slower speeds. Check all the name plates on back. It might simply be a X-2000 model with an "M" cover over the heads. If modified then that's a whole other world and you would need to find what the modifications were, I have not investigated such a route. Also check the heads to see if they actually are correct for 2T playback/record ie. 4 heads .... erase, 2T record, 2T PB and 4T PB If only 3 heads then it's a 4T deck that only does 3.75 and 7,5ips. (I always forget what the cm rate is). Oh, and the M has an IEC/NAB switch on the back, others don't have this switch. I think my M deck came with just one belt too. It didn't prevent it from working ok. It's a while ago so I don't remember if I put 2 belts in. I Need to check my videos! Don't know the reasoning behind 2 belts I plan to get back to mine for a few reasons, 1/ I think my adjustment of the arm positions is not done properly 2/ I want to revisit the toque settings for the reels as well as ensure the capstan pressures are ok, they are tricky to get right according to the manual and I don't entirely trust their method. 3/ Mine does not record, totally faulty and unkown cause. I have since bought a Tentelometer to correctly measure tape torques. Re belts To be honest the service manual descriptions of belts and capstan drive methodology is completely bonkers. The manuals confuse the standard, the R and the M as to how they work with what belts and the parts list of belts is confusing. I look forward to when I pull my M apart again so that I can definitively say whether the turns ratio of front and back capstan are the same or not. The manuals description to me sounds back to front. Eg Is it different torque on reels or different turn rate of the capstans that keeps the tension across the heads? Fortunately atm my adjustment is working fine for PB and the tapes sound fabulous on PB. It will be a few months before I get back to it. 😞 moggy

Hello Moggy, I could use some help with my unit. My X2000R kept burning the 1ohm resistor on the 24V power supply circuit to the capstan motor and 24.3 volts to the record and play board located at the bottom of the unit. I was able trace it to an IC M5231L on the record and play board and discovered that the middle pin of the 5-pin IC is left open, no solder connection and no trace of circuitry connection on the PCB. Comparing the actual part number of the 5-pin IC on the PCB to the service manual it’s different than the 3-pin IC shown on the service manual. Is there a way to test the 5-pin IC on the board or do I have to remove it? I’m totally at a dead-end, and not being able to test it hot with power running through the 5-pin IC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The middle pin is compensation so probably isn't used. [ 5 gnd, 4 adj, 3 comp, 2 out, 1 in ]. I'm assuming you mean Q316 which is 2SD1140 but actually a M5231L. Measure voltage on all 3 nodes, ie 24v, 20v and 18.2v. These will change according to the bias used. TRy changing LH/EE and speed and output 18.2v should change slightly. Basically this regulator is controlling the voltage to the bias oscillator to provide different bias levels required. If the voltage is 24v all the time then the regulator may be shorted. I cannot find any 1ohm. You could also remove Q316 and see if current reverts to normal. It's also possible that U307 bias osc is a dead short. You could remove U307 and see if over current stops. Also see if there is actually a bias tone being generated, perhaps not. p.s. you can't test the regulator outside of in-circuit unless it's a dead short. Just a few thoughts.

@@chrismogford the M5231L is U308. Also the 1 ohm resistor is on the Power PCB board, it’s right after the bridge rectifier.
