Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

I have trained 48 dogs in my life. (That's how many dogs I've personally found and rehomed.) I always trained the 'leave it' command by trading a very high value treat for the thing I wanted them to drop. I like Victoria's method better and will be using it from now on. This is why: She is teaching more than drop it for a treat (a very high value reward usually). Victoria is showing us how to make giving and taking a game, so that your dog will be willing to give you just about anything. She is exchanging equal value treats (2 identical toys) instead of a two objects where one of the objects has an intrinsically higher value. The thing she does that makes one of the 2 equal value toys more valuable is her playful interaction with the dog. Her method builds more relationship with the dog.

The leave it command does train impulse control a lot better than the Drop it, take it game. But it's no biggie, i think.

i watched this whole video Jenny & not once did i think she wasn't in control. Your entitled to your oppinion but she has had years and years of experience and knowledge & knows exactly what she's doing. This method is working wonders with my puppy, you focus on one thing at a time and work on "discipline" after when they are doing wrong to not confuse them, also yes she has to "up the anty" every time because dogs get bored so quickly, u need to keep them more excited each time!

I have always played tug-o-war with all my dogs and they are all completely well behaved and would never harm us, so clearly those so called people who say not to play that have no idea what they are talking about. It is a natural behavior in dogs.
@ForceFreeTrainergirl06
@ForceFreeTrainergirl06 9 жыл бұрын
***** You are absolutely right. Paying tug is a very natural behaviour for a dog and playing with your dog in this way can strengthen your bond. However, one should really only play this game if your dog has a good leave it cue.
@jewelciappio2878
@jewelciappio2878 5 жыл бұрын
My dog wanting to play tug was the reason I chose to teach “leave it”. It’s helpful in other ways, but I wouldn’t want to play tug if it was causing aggression or resource guarding behavior. It depends on the pup.

It is training. I'm training an assistance dog atm and it's more or less the same (though I work with clicker too). You have to cue at the moment the dog performs the act. Even if it's by accident you can teach a dog a command. Like, Narnia needs to learn to scratch to alert, everytime she paws me by herself, you say 'scratch', and eventually they'll do it. Timing :)

hi just a suggestion (not sure if this is a better alternative but it seemed to work a little better with my pup) hold a piece of kibble or a small treat when you initially give the dog a toy. when they drop it say "drop it" and reward them. i think it will be less confusing and easier for a dog to learn drop it and take it separately.

Everyone who said that Victoria is not a good dog trainer... You know whatt? Shut up please... I'm sure your dog would shut your mouth if he could... Just look how happy Holland is around her... And yeahh.. This really works... And some people said that she doesn't give food for reward...!! Well... She gave Holland the toy right? If she would give him the food, he would not concentrate on the toy and the: take it, drop it, but in the food!! In the other videos, where she doesn't gave the dogs toys, yep, she gave them food! Victoria, if you are reading this right now just know that i love you and i love watching your videos... The ones who said you were not good enough, she just said some crap stuff... 😊

Harry Devita He's 2yrs old. He is a two time SWAT trainee washout. He didn't have what they were looking for in obedience and aggression. I believe the obedience was a fail at their part because he's far from stupid. But at 2yrs and hundreds of hours of qualified training he has zero impulse control, no attention span, is highly sexually aggressive, a chewer, a digger, lunges and barks and attempts to bite kids, and is scared of cats. So much work for us to do. Luckily, I have no experience so this should be fun..

bwc605 - It's the Malinois in him. They're tough dogs...but very trainable. I love Malinois but you do have to stay one step ahead of them. You need to teach him to use his mouth GENTLY when taking anything from you. This can be a bit hard on your hand, but it's the quickest way to do it. My pup's father is an untrained, kenneled Weimaraner and I taught him to take treats gently in the time it took to offer...and give...4 treats. 1. Start with a treat, not a toy. Make sure it is small enough to be hidden in your hand. (Don't use a bone.) 2. Show the treat and then close your hand around it with just the tiniest bit peeking out. (He'll probably snatch at the treat, and this will take guts on your part. Just stand there. Take the bites. If he's focussed on the treat, he won't be biting in anger...he'll just be a bit wild.) 3. Say nothing. 4. With all the snatching, he'll, undoubtedly, lick at some point. IMMEDIATELY say, "Good!" and use your thumb to push the treat into his mouth. (Or just drop it in the gaping maw...LOL) 5. Get another treat and do it again. And again. And...however long it takes. Let him figure out that licking is the ONLY thing that gets him the treat. The very foundation of my method is to let the dog figure out what to do. I call it "setting the dog up for success" and it means that I (the intelligent human, after all) fix it so that the dog can only do it right...even if he has to try a few things, first. When your dog decides that THIS is the right thing to do, when he makes that decision, himself, he will do it for life. My pup is just 4 months old and as wild as they come. Yet he comes when called, sits in front of me without being commanded and takes a treat from my mouth with utmost gentleness. And he figured it all out himself...HE made the choice how to act. So...he never "disobeys" because he thinks its his idea.

I have always taught my dogs to drop it and take it by when they come to play with me I will hold it still so that they get bored of it not moving and eventually drop it and then I say drop and immediately give it back saying take and then just repeat the process this has always worked for me
@MenyCritters

you are giving them a new command. Eventually, she associates the command with whatever happened directly following. I use this in my classes all the time and it works perfectly well. some dogs need the lesson adjusted slightly for whatever reason, but a majority of the time this lesson goes smoothly.

My 12 week old GSD whines when bored/needs to get better at entertaining himself and knowing well come back (This is the biggest hurdle!) Every informative video says leave for a bit then come back then a longer amount then come back and repeat. Some say ignore him but its like, even if im in the same room hell whine for an hour until i pay him attention. I haven't seen much change yet and (a) He doesn't stop for periods longer than 10 seconds... ever. Whether im in or out of the room. There is no interval long enough really to where it's not like we are rewarding it? (b) I'm not sure if he is anxious or bored or what. If he is entertaining himself outside (exploring) or inside with a yummy bone or toy he's fine... no whining. Sometimes if he is sleepy he's fine.... He has many toys, we even rotate to keep them interesting. I'll buy one of those that you put treats inside tomorrow. If it persists, should I just do a trial by fire and leave him for... 2 hours? He was afraid of the outdoors and that method of tough love worked (I kept the door open in the kitchen a lot for a day or two... carried him out, sat on the patio with him shaking with fear right by the house and tired to project calm, loving vibes. Behold, 2 minutes later he is exploring. and loves going out now) I guess we'll just have to keep the gentle approach and hopefully gets better in the coming weeks and as he is tought more tricks and rules given more jobs, meets new people and becomes more self assured. If that doesn't work... trial by fire. Have to keep reminding myself not to expect too much, he's a baby but I feel we owe it to him to raise him to have a purpose and respect and a decent level of autonomy in a firm but loving way, no whining, I just want him to be content with or without us!
@shumi3735
@shumi3735 7 жыл бұрын
I think it's a learned behaviour though... just because for him to whine at night when he is alone is understandable... but to do it with someone there in the room but just not playing with him? Surely it's learned? And he doesnt do it when he is going to sleep or playing outside or chewing on a bone. And he sees me or anyone leave. How do I deal with it in that case?
@Madronaxyz
@Madronaxyz 7 жыл бұрын
LIke you said, your dog is just a baby. It's not natural for babies to be alone, so it is not surprising that he cries. You might try exercising him more, then he'll sleep.

+Joel Green glad you mentioned that... this wont wok if the dog values what he has in his mouth more than what you have. This also wont work in a real life scenario if you don't have anything to " trade" . This WONT prevent resource guarding.. even if you work the puppy from early. When a dog has something in its mouth food or valuable treat they will focus on that..
@kateconnellcpdt-ka692
@kateconnellcpdt-ka692 8 жыл бұрын
+Hannah Saona If Victoria had done the technique correctly, it WOULD in fact help prevent resource guarding. As you said, her timing was terrible, and her environment isn't nearly controlled enough for LEARNING purposes. Drop It should always be taught ON LEASH or in a very small area (think hallway or bathroom) until you know the dog will Drop It when asked, and do so quickly. This puppy was allowed to run around with the toy like a wild child, and that shouldn't be allowed to happen while you are TEACHING your dog to Drop It. You should always train your dog to do a behavior BEFORE you need it and practice with a variety of objects. Don't try to TEACH a new behavior in a "real life scenario" - it's too late, then! If you didn't set your dog up for success and he stole something (a sock, a stick, etc), get another one and play trade with that until your puppy is happy to give it up completely. Your job is to have something of equal or greater value than what your dog has, plain and simple. Once they learn the cue, you won't need to meet that criteria except for sometimes. I taught my puppy and 100's of other dogs to Drop It using both the toy trade and the tug technique. My dog will spit out food as he is eating (even MEAT), and he even backed off and walked away from a baby bird that he was about to taste. Several of my clients' dog have also dropped live animals. As I said, her video/technique was VERY poorly executed (she couldn't even figure out how to honk the toy until nearly the end), but the technique itself isn't inherently bad.
@Madronaxyz
@Madronaxyz 7 жыл бұрын
It won't work if you are trying to train the dog in the midst of "real life". That's why you start training any single command in a low distraction environment. Like Victoria said, you need to have a equal or higher value object for the trade. And this will prevent resource guarding--I rescue dogs and I've had 48 untrained dogs living with me over the last 30 years. It worked for every single dog.

@DeeBroton
@DeeBroton 11 жыл бұрын
Use your dog's interest to your advantage. If he won't drop the toy when he returns to you try using a more exciting toy with a squeaker or bell in it, but the idea is to have two of the same so one is not more valuable then the other. Best thing to do is walk away from the dog for a few minutes then try again.

Yes, I got my puppy for my birthday but when I saw where he was living previously, I was Horified. There were 50*50*20 boxes and they all had like 4 puppies in each of them. They were all howling and whining and their water supply was full of hair. My 4 month old golden retriever can't even climb a 15 centimeter tall step and I had to pick him up and put him down where he wants to be each time. And that was my birthday present. From now I feel really sad for the dog, he can't do what others do.

Even if you buy a dog or not a LOT of dogs are going to be put to sleep eventually! Shelter dogs even purebreds! See if you adopt a dog from a shelter then you help a dog that was going to be put to sleep and if you buy a pure bred puppy then you will also save a dog because if no1 bought that dog then it would have to be put to sleep as well...you cant save them all unfortunately! And also some people like pure bred dogs! You cant judge them! I am also a fan of pure breds!

+Joona Karkimo find a well behaved dog that has social experience and a medium energy level. Gotta make sure the dog is very well behaved and wont bully a nervous dog. OFten times dogs wont play out of anxiety , fear or even dominance. But if you connect your dog with the right dog your doogie will play

The second part of what you said is inaccurate...ANY dog (bought or adopted) will love you equally as long as you give it all your love...please dont give people wrong information..

Unless you need AKC certification for some reason, there's no reason not to adapt from a shelter or a rescue organization.
