Some dogs are food and toy motivated, so of course not using them like in the vid would make the learning take months for those types. :p Just do as is fit for your dog. Some dogs just want to please their master and "Good girl!" is all they need.

People who say positive reinforcement doesn't work are really saying they are too lazy or too impatient to train humanely and properly. So many people want the quick fix, but with time, patience and humane methods like Victoria show us, you will not only train your dog effectively and beautifully, but you will also be building a bond of love and trust with your dog.

I just started this today with my 6 1/2mo Great Dane pup and, although I did not have high hopes, it went quite well. He had a couple episodes of biting on the leash, so I just stopped, held it still and he got bored. I can see us eventually walking everywhere and him being well behaved. Side note: it also drains a lot of energy, so he is just more well behaved in general.

As humans, we tend to believe we need a lot of verbal recognition to communicate with our dogs. It's important to step outside ourselves and realize that, where our species' communication revolves around words, theirs revolves around body language. This means they're naturally very aware of yours -- if you've been around dogs, you know how they observe you. A smile or body posture that reflects relaxation and happiness means just as much to them as an "atta girl." The benefit of using this type of reward is that it helps to keep your dog (and you!) calmer. It would be easier for the puppy in this video to control her whining and jumping without the charge of excitement generated by Victoria's vocalizations. When you're calm, you teach your dog to be calm. It makes it easier for a dog not to pull, it makes it easier for them to be social with people and other animals, and it makes it easier for them to be loved by the multitudes. Good luck with your training, and may your dog teach you the art of relaxation and joy.

My dog pulls, but she also bites the leash. Shes a teacup poodle and has chewed through extremely thick leashes. and has learned a lot of things super quickly. The one thing that she refuses to do is walk good on a leash. Shes amazing around the neighborhood but the second she realizes we're heading home she becomes a completely new dog. She chokes herself even with a good harness and she starts wheezing like crazy. She will take treats inside the house, but the second we're outside she doesn't at all care. I'm praying this'll help.

Well, humans aren't their moms and dogs know that. And having prongs shoved into your throat constantly will only harm their trachea. That's why it's good to train your dog to walk loose leash, no matter what type of collar you use.
@nancyle830612 жыл бұрын
Yes starting training as early as possible is important. Motive your dog to move with praise, food, toys while the leash is on. Let's go is a different command than come. Let's go is for on leash loose leash walking. Come is for off leash, the dog must come to you and sit in front of you.

Like Victoria said this dog in the video doesn't like food or toys so she uses praise. She said you need to find what motivates your dog. I think your puppy wants to be the alpha pup. You need to take control and let your puppy know you mean business but in a nice way. I would suggest taking your puppy out for small walks everyday and when it needs to go to the bathroom to get it used to being on the leash. Let your puppy know it is a fun experience and that he/she has nothing to worry about. If you don't mind, you might want to try putting your puppy in a harness to make it less stressful. I hope this helped. :)

do you think that will work with a few mounth old puppys
@dontpugme12 жыл бұрын
Just keep up with turning around immediately if he jumps. Always make sure you never give him anything when he jumps. He must have all paws on the floor to get anything. Also, make sure he knows sit very well. Show him that he gets stuff like food or attention when he sits but jumping gets no response.

How do you find out what a dog is motivated by? I have a 4 year old rottweiler that is pretty well behaved most of the time. However, when he's on a walk and sees a dog, he will stare at the dog until the dog goes out of sight, or comes over. If the dog approaches and picks up a fight, or even just a game, he will be very aggressive. He likes food, but when he's outside nothing will distract him. He's generally not really motivated by toys or praises neither.

Some good breeders will start training (even clicker training!) at a young age. Learning starts (to be functional for people) at 1-2 weeks - even before they open their eyes!. Clickers can be scary, but if paired with super yummy food (cheese works well) a good breeder can start then too. I've seen a littler of 5 week old puppies all go from jumping on the xpen to sitting en-mass waiting for their bonus food rations (other than mom's)

When walking purchase a body harness for better control. Practice "watch me" exercises . Use food , toys or praise to motivate him to focus on you. When he jumps turn around but keep an eye on him. As soon as all four of his paws touch the floor turn around give him a treat. And repeat as much as you need. For house guest coming over. Think about teaching "go to your place" to prevent jumping and excited greetings. Google how to train "watch me" "go to your place" Good Luck Nancy ABCDT

Like Victoria dogs don't want to be on a leash when they are born. Overtime they build a positive association that leash = walk. You motivate your dog will praise, food, toys when the leash is on.Try different foods..chicken, hot dogs, tug toys, etc. to see whatyourdog will work for.And, dont give these high value items unless your dog is working for it. i.e walking loose on a leash, sitting, etc.

another way is to just stop every time your dog pulls and wait for slack on the leash or for your dog to look at you. It takes time and a lot of patience but it can be effective depending on your dog. it worked for mine. She learned that she was going to go anywhere if she was pulling.
