That was great Mia & I agree, far safer for so many reasons. I would appreciate seeing this same lesson, but on an untrained horse - one that has always been tied up. That would be very helpful for those of us who need to retrain. Your horse is magnificent!

Enjoyable activists with your free horse are good for trust. Lovely example of building trust and relaxation in handling. Was guided to talk to youe horse when grooming and close to hindquarters with hand on rump. Kicks deliver the most impact in contact with full leg extension. Stay safe x

When I first started watching your videos some time ago I learnt this technique from watching you and it has been priceless for a better relationship with my pony. I can farrier my horse unrestrained and he is more aware of the process we go through when doing hooves. He will lift his own hoof and place it down as we work together to get the job done and he wont go anywhere. He will shift to get comfortable but he stands very well. Thankyou Mia -

I really like what you do; I am going to try it; i have a horse that doesn't like being tied; I don't tie him now, but I would like to try grooming without harness; this seems great, and I also want to be doing what you are doing with the hind legs this is how we were with horses as children, we knew they would never kick us, but I don't have that confidence now and I wonder where it went. I am glad to see what you do, and I think choice is a relationship that my horse is asking for more and more; he is choosing to allow me to put harness on and off etc. I have been very patient and eventually he allows it and lowers his head for my access and enjoys some carrot!

We used to call it "ground tying". A horse will stand in the same spot for hours if he has been properly trained to ground tie. Glad to see your vids again. 👍🏼

I don't think so. Lacking a bit of bulk, feather and heaviness in tail to my eye. But happy to be corrected - she could also be young or just lighter build.

Can you please show this with a horse that is still learning? For example, what do you do if by the time you have backed up away from them, they walk off? You back them up to the spot that you want them to stay vs. you lead them? And what about the horse that walks off over and over? Also, can you teach them this while in a halter and lead rope, with the rope over their neck? My horse is not so good at liberty yet and it is hard to back her up unless I wiggle the lead rope, otherwise if I stand in front of her and push the air with my hands, she just goes sideways. Things like this, with an untrained horse you could show how to handle it. Thanks! :-)

Horses can learn this method in different ways. I personally use the dropped lead rope to signal "stand", and they don't move unless I cue them to move. As you do here, just keep correcting any movement (I just correct with pressure from the lead rope, and put them back in the spot, leaving them alone with a loose lead if they stand still) until they stand while you walk anywhere around them. This is how I prefer to saddle, rug or do anything to my horse. He is free to move if he needs to, if he is too scared or uncomfortable, and its easy to pick up the rope and put him back

What if your horses look around at everything and and spook a lot? Both of my mares and kinda flighty... I live close to a busy road and don't want them getting hit. Lots of animals have been killed on my road and I would never forgive myself if something happened to my girls! I love the idea of no halter, but would rather play it safe. What should I do?

@kellieforbes14723 жыл бұрын
Oh how I wish I had practiced this back in March of 2021. I found out the hard way how much damage a horse can do to a hand in a split second. I lost half of my thumb and 4 months later and my hand is still not functional. It's taken seven surgeries and I likely won't regain full function. :-(

A horse can easily learn that being tied is a time to relax. 'Tie time' is very important for a horse when done correctly.

@shewolfninja4 жыл бұрын
more often than not it shows a sign of acceptance. depends on the situation, if they are in a threatening sitautation for example, they will chew/lick to show submissiveness so the "threat" goes away. this isnt a threatening environment in any way so she is accepting the instruction :) my youngster chews/licks to show the older horses he will do as his told.

Hello Juan, I have to say, I found your comment toward Mia very hostile. One can certainly disagree without being insulting and so personal about it! I've watched many of Mia's videos and she has often cautioned viewers against attempting her techniques that are risky with an untrained horse. She is clearly strongly bonded with this horse. I think Mia was demonstrating a future goal of mutual trust between horse and human. And I find her training style both respectful and effective. :)
@shawnmurray99644 жыл бұрын
Juan, why in the world would you wish harm on another? Is disagreeing with you so monumental that harm should come? Please, get over yourself. The need to dominate & control will not serve you well. It projects your insecurity with the world, not strength, like you think.

An old cowboy told me that there are two places to stand at a horse’s hind end: very close or very far away. The space in between is the kill zone.
