Teach Your Kids This Montessori Place Value Lesson

In this first place value lesson I'll show you how we introduced the decimal system using the Montessori Golden Bead Material to give our children a concrete understanding of base 10. Teach this lesson to children who can count to 10 and who understand these quantities and symbols (numbers). Approximately ages 3-6 years. (Follow the child!) Material links below!

Wow Jennifer! Love this/these lessons! I loved the golden beads in elementary. I even used them to teach square root. Maybe someday I'll try putting that lesson up! But I do have a question. When I look at you the numerals seem upside down. Do you have the child sit next to you to give the lesson? How do you make sure the young child understands that the unit goes on the right? Again, thanks so much for your beautiful lessons!

Yes! Thanks so much for asking Claudia! The child should have the mat facing them as it's facing ME when you see me speaking across the table to you. The correct orientation is the way that it looks in the top-down segments. I do teach with my child sitting next to me instead of across from me, especially younger kiddos in the 3-6 year age range. Can you give any insight into what needs to be taught 1st 2nd and so on if they've never had any Montessori math exposure

Well it really depends on the child and where they are with their understanding. I think you mean 1st and 2nd grades-if so, I would generally start by reviewing place value and then move into using the golden brands and stamp games for the appropriate arithmetic lessons (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
