How do I know if a video is covering beginner, intermediate or advanced material? Is the resource page used for putting the material I consumed in, or should I put that material under the different stages?
@vaughngene
@vaughngene Ай бұрын
Hey Great question! So I would say it comes down to the challenge and what that “community” deems those levels. So it’s not set in stone per-say. If you are a beginner you are unfamiliar with almost anything. But as you learn beginner things, you can tell if something is WAY out of your league (goes in the advanced category) or if something is just a few tutorials away (goes in intermediate category.) These videos can be moved around also as you learn more. (For example something you thought was deemed advanced on guitar is actually an intermediate skill so you move it), The labels are irrelevant really but it’s just a good way to organize it. But again, the community will typically dictate your level. You can technically name them whatever you want, as long as the core idea is there and you have some organization. Guitar example can be 1. Trash 2. Decent 3. Kinda good 4. Really Good 5. Godlike Hope that make sense, Labels are just for you to organize your thoughts. 👌

And resources can be things like a textbook type material, Where you don’t actually read it front to back, but just choose chapter when you need it. Like a comprehensive list of guitar scales on a website for example.

As a teacher myself, I wanted to give kudus where kudus is deserved! One more layer to add is building in a face-to-face community around that particular skill. If it's playing an instrument, try to play with other people FOR other people. If it's cooking, then try to cook for your friends. Even coding benefits from the community aspect--the rhetorical relationship you have with other creators and the audience. Studies have shown that learning is amplified in groups--even if everyone isn't like-minded (especially so).

@@vaughngene I've taught for 12 years. Special Education and English Literature. Although I did observe some students thrive during remote learning due to the removal of social anxiety, there was much lost by taking school out of its physical social setting. As an amateur musician of 20+ years, jam sessions have been the setting where I learn most. I seek out the best to study with and apply those skills in a face to face setting. Then I gather my own self evaluation with that of the jam session community. Jazz is social music, as I am sure Blues, Rock, Classical, and Rap are as well. The internet gives us a ton of resources, but nothing beats a teacher and a face-to-face community to grow your skills. Vaughn, I think this conversation is proof that you might need a part two to your video ;) Check out Christopher Emdin's book FOR WHITE FOLKS WHO TEACH IN THE HOOD. Emdin pioneered the idea of cogenerative dialogues--COGENS. The students leverage their classroom community by teaching each other in ways that surpass reciprocal teaching. We mistakenly see community as a passive ingredient--community is actually the catalyst and lifeblood of our learning process.

It’s impressive that at a seemingly young age you have figured out how to teach yourself anything you want to learn. You also made an astute point at about 4:25 mark. We need to be PATIENT. A five minute video may have material that takes 1 week or a year to learn. Therefore, watch, learn, practice and implement and then observe, relearn and repeat the cycle. You will do great work.

For me, the hardest part is getting over the nature of those short little 10 minute videos. Videos that are a summation of hundreds or thousands of hours, and that the creators just drop their skills as a set of steps so matter-of-factly. Though it makes sense from the perspective of a teacher as well. When I try to teach my friends something like throwing knives, or juggling, it almost seems impossible to empathize with them because I find it hard to imagine a world where I can't just *feel* how the knife should flow, or *feel* where the next ball is going to land. Quite trippy, lol.

A lot of it is just the coming to terms with the amount of deliberate practice one needs to put in. I do think videos could do a far better job at explicitly saying this, including me Lol. But I hope to make that a normal thing moving forward.

This is the exact experience I’ve had trying to learn how to play the guitar. I watched the 10 minute beginner video and felt like it should take me only 10 minutes to master. I got frustrated and stopped and haven’t picked up my guitar since. I’ve told myself the story that I need a teacher but this makes so much sense and I will pick up the video again with the insight you’ve shared. Thank you for your perspective.

Yeah I really wish that more 'teachers' would REALLY express that it takes a while to get the reps in. Even the major scale for example. It takes 5 minutes to run through it in all 12 keys from the chart. But that takes months to memorize and really get it under your fingers. I will make a guitar course years from now and I really want to make that the main point of it. the tutorial really is 1% of the equation.

I've been all over the place, not made any progress in any one of them, but now have a roadmap, to pick one thing and stick to it. I’ve heard it said there’s two modes of learning, equally important. Input, and output. As you said we often give ourselves and information overload, input, without ever taking the opportunity to learn from it through action, output. glad you mentioned this because i’ve realized that this is the only way to go. currently working on swimming, and i’ve gotten so much further than where i was when I first started. my swim teacher helped for about two weeks, and she just told me “you’ve got this. don’t be afraid”. after getting over myself, I took the chance and started going to the pool consistently and took on structured plans i found on the internet. I can now go about 200m non stop at a moderate pace, after being unable to float or crawl past 5ft. It’s really challenging, but i’ve never felt more in tune with how much potential I have, if only I put myself out there

Right now I sort of wanted to outline the two extremes of difficulty, so I set one video for what I thought is the easiest thing (eg a 5 minute lotus flower on youtube) and one for what I think is the hardest (eg a rabbit designed by Gen Hagiwara, there's a 45 min video on yt that blew my mind), and I'll spend most of my time in between those two extremes.

Nice! You’ll be able to grasp a lot of what I say here then. And no problem!

This is EXACTLY what I needed to open my eyes. I have a habit of constantly gathering study material which then gives me a satisfaction of having done something but I don't actually use that material to the fullest.

This video is hands down one of the most informative and inspiring pieces of content I’ve found on KZbin. Your advice on how to effectively learn things online on your own was exactly what I needed. You made the entire process feel achievable, and the sincerity in your delivery really stood out-something that’s rare to find these days. I’m genuinely excited to dive into my own learning journey (becoming a software engineer/developer). In fact, I’m planning to create an inspirational header on my Notion board right above the beginner level of my course outline, and I’ll be including a link to this video there. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible video!

Man that means a lot, thank you! 🙏 My goal is to make it as clear and as honest as possible and see if it works for others, so that’s really good to hear. And no problem! More coming overtime. 👌

The difficult thing is to apply the action and be disciplined. I see a lot of content to overcome “learnings” and everyone comments on similar circumstances and with different perspectives and the situations are the same but I would like to highlight that we ourselves are the “anchor” and we forget to be “disciplined” when applying the tasks. And that is what life is about, going through suffering in our own way because without that no one would be commenting on these issues.

Indeed, It's a skill we need to build up but we all have it. A lot of discipline comes from limiting our options too. Something I am going talk about in the future.
