My U9 team is playing up in a U10 league with faster, stronger, and bigger opposing teams and by implementing sound defensive principles we have been very succesful at stopping them. We are currently the top team in the league thanks to following your advice on building out of the back, patterned play and just trusting the development process. Thanks for your awesome content! @@CoachRorySoccer So two weeks ago, my smallest player on my U10 team kept running at attackers, taking a wild kick and missing, and allowing the attacker through--resulting in 3 goals against us throughout the game. But yesterday he faced off with the other team's best dribbler, on his toes, and contained the attacker--forcing him to make a pass. When he came off at halftime, he told me, "I contained!" He was so proud of himself--and rightly so!

In that first diagram, 2 v 2, I would want the interior defender to close the middle to push attacker to their right (even though it will most likely be their dominant foot). However, at the same time the second defender should scoop towards middle despite giving room to second attacker by the sideline. I'll take that chance anytime over pushing the attacker to top-middle of the box.

He is pushing him towards that sideline So there are 4 pitches here marked out. Might hard to see. I’ve focused just on the bottom right one and not put any players in the other. In actuality their would be 3-4 2v2 games going on at same time.

Hey Coach, Great videos. I'm really enjoying your stuff and am using it to train my U12 Girls team. Honestly it is better material and more palatable than some training I've done via US Soccer Learning. I have a request. Are you able to chop up some of your videos into shorts? I want to be able to send shorts of many of your concepts to my girls and parents as needed. Specifically your F,S,S,L defending technique as well as the Protect, Cover, Balance piece are great resources. Lastly, I want to encourage you to continue putting out this great content. And thank you for the recommendation on the duKTIG products. I love the breakdowns you do man very specific it's lovely for a new coach. These youngsters ultimately do what we say because they are supposed to. Can you do a video on purpose? The D wont press together unless they have purpose. Can we talk forwards and backwards passes with purpose? It's difficult when they all play baseball and basketball as well with different coaches.

Hi, I really like your tips. My girl plays G15 soccer and her position is RB. She's a little small and sometimes goes up against bigger and faster attackers. What do you recommend for mitigating this?
@CoachRorySoccer2 жыл бұрын
Just keep them in front. Slow them down. Defending with front foot. Don’t be afraid to get physical. Use angles to track back. Don’t have to win balls to defend well. Pick your spots.

Hey coach, another great video! I help coach a first grade 6v6 team Where goalkeepers are not allowed at this age. We have two defenders one that always pressure and one that always covers near the goal but comes out if there is a loose ball or the opponent has a bad touch. The challenge is that the defender that covers deal with lots of full speed breakaways. What should I tell the defender to do in those situations?
@CoachRorySoccer Жыл бұрын
Yeah they need to clear a ball or step and keep player in front.
@RaulVasquez-w7y Жыл бұрын
hello again Coach. Now that my kid will be a second grader in the fall his team will be 7v7 which includes a goalkeeper for the first time. My son wants to be the goalkeeper. As an assistant coach of the team how do you recommend we introduce the position to him? Are there any training videos you recommend? Would you be willing to make one? also, we will be introducing 4- 3-1 and rondos for the first time because of the great videos you are producing. Keep up the great work.
@samrobley Жыл бұрын
Do you have any videos on how to coach when the defender is beaten. The second defender presses, the will double back back, but what does that look like and how should you reset so it’s not a giant player blob.
@CoachRorySoccer Жыл бұрын
Yes player closes to the ball presses in that situation. Depending on what is happening the goal really is to slow the ball carrier down. Even tackle the ball out of bounds so other players can recover. Player spacing in general is accomplished through positional play games but that is mostly in possession work. I would say the more experience they have the better it gets defensively.

Thanks for another great video. Any tips to help the CBs stay connected? I often find my CBs lose shape and get isolated 1v1 or leave big gaps in the middle. Of all the positions, the CBs seem to struggle with their spacing the most.

Yes. What age? We do a lot of 7v2-3 building out of the back to small goals in my sessions. That and pattern choreography really helps the CB pair with shape and spacing etc.

Hey man how are you? I chatted with you a while back About my 14u team Formation. I am Having trouble getting my girls to cover the middle of the field. Especially my midfielders. They’re going up on attack but we’re always having trouble getting back and my 4 defenders are left alone. We literally went toe to toe with this team Yesterday but they scored three goals because the team we played had one girl who could score from 10 yards past the box. I mean we would get back to cover and she got 3 shots off and put them all in the top. I know Stamina is an issue with mids and I’m going to make some changes with players but also the 442 I think is gone. Honestly growing up playing we never really used a 352 formation so I’m Trying to figure out if it’s to confusing to teach them At this point? But it’s just a lack of support back on d so one move and they get big shots off from far. Those are the teams we struggle with. The ones who can shoot from far because the middle is open as my defenders are Not getting the support in time from the midfielders. So between that and girls standing around too much any advice? They go hard in practice at each other. But then some just stand around too much during the games. So I need to figure out how To crowd The defense lanes but still have the attack strong. Thank you! Ryan
