This week, I want to share my experience creating and selling online courses on two different platforms: Skillshare and Teachable. I’ve made 6 figures on both of those platforms - I’ve been teaching on Skillshare for 4.5 years now and on Teachable for 3 years. I’ve also been a student on both of those platforms, too. In this video, we jump into some pros and cons (and how much I made when I first started) so you’ll know which is best for you if you plan to create and sell online courses.

Hi Teela, I think you explained the differences really well. Sounds like Teachable allows you to earn more, while requiring more expertise and work in marketing, sales, growing your audience, etc - running a small business. Personally I didn't want to take that path, and so I do appreciate and enjoy the income that I get from Skillshare for courses I created in the past. Less effort and less reward, but still worth it. This month I made about $1,400 on Skillshare and I haven't published a new course or anything on social media in several months. Like you said, they both have their pros and cons, and each or both of them might work well for different people with different preferences.

Thanks so much, Teela. I am a big fan but also have been a successful Skillshare teacher for a few years. I have over 90 classes there but was recently suspended with no specific information other than their form mail list of possible violations. I am trying to appeal it, but meanwhile I will try Teachable through my website. I have received an outpouring of support from students, and many say they will follow me wherever I go. I really needed to read all this today and I trust you and all the information you sullied. Thanks so much.

For teachable, since the students get lifetime access - does that mean you have to continuously pay the monthly fee indefinitely as a teacher?
@EveryTuesday
@EveryTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
That's correct. I typically say 'as long as Every Tuesday exists, the courses will be available to you' (the lifetime of my brand). I'm all in with my courses for the long term, so I'm very comfortable with continuing those payments (I pay yearly, and there's a nice discount for that, too). If there's ever a time in the future where I wouldn't be able to continue, I'd make the courses downloadable, so in that respect, it would truly be 'lifetime'.

I've taken both Skillshare classes (from you!) and courses on Teachable. Both experiences are exactly how you've described them! I'm wondering about a question for you: why did you choose Teachable over Kajabi? I know that both a platforms that allow you to have complete control over your content. But I'm just wondering if you looked into another platform before you chose Teachable?
@EveryTuesday
@EveryTuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chelsea! Yes! I looked at a few other options, but Teachable was overwhelmingly recommended by others I followed online at the time (and I had taken a few courses that were hosted by Teachable and I enjoyed the experience I had, so I was already familiar with what I'd be giving my students). I decided to give Teachable a try first and it didn't disappoint, so I've never had a reason to pursue a different platform after that :)

Hi Teela! I have been teaching on skillshare for 2.5 years or so and also have found success teaching on Udemy. I have been searching for that extra push toward FINALLY starting my own teachable platform and your video was super helpful! I have had many people message me that having my classes on my own platform might be a great fit for me since I offer some pretty in depth courses. I can also give students access to all classes in a more controlled environment where I can guide them through a class order, like a university. I am convinced ! Now I just the motivation to upload over 150 hours of content to teachable, whew! 🙃😧Did you hire help or migrate the content yourself?
@EveryTuesday
@EveryTuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Yay! You'll LOVE having all that control + I think you're reallllly going to enjoy Teachable! Excited for you! I migrated my more popular courses myself + left others on Skillshare since they were older and a bit more dated. This opened up that time for me to create new content exclusively on my site. I'd focus on bringing over your most successful ones first (it actually goes really quickly once you have your course modules/lectures outlined in teachable, then you just upload those vid files). After that you can evaluate if you want to bring over the others or start focusing on the new ones you'll make just for the students buying directly from you :)

I just had to migrate 8 courses over to a teachable platform last week for a stack social bundle I was doing so I learned how quickly I can migrate content by just uploading via google drive. Beware of Skillshare. They have made multiple changes that dramatically reduced the teachers payout. They also have randomly shut down honest and ethical teachers without giving them a way to defend themselves. Big market places are using you to build their brand but have no problem kicking you out or reducing your pay. Spend your time learning how to market your own content and build your own business. Nothing worse than waking up to a large cut in pay and their only explanation is that they are now paying what the market standard is.

I couldn't agree more. I actually stopped teaching there in April 2022 because of everything you outlined. They've lost many other top teachers for the same reason. It's just not the place it used to be and I'd never recommend teaching there again. Thank you for sharing this with others!

I have! When I started using Teachable, Thinkific was not capable of doing all it is today. I've always felt Teachable was ahead of them in that respect, plus they've secured quite a bit of funding, giving me confidence they'll be around for a long time. Personally, I've also always found Teacahble's UI aesthetic more appealing, which was really important to me as a designer making creative courses.

You may have published this in 2019. It came on after learning about a guy suggesting Udemy vs Skillshare. Teachable is new to me, and after teaching overseas it may be a great opportunity. Is it okay to teach multiple subjects. i.e. I taught overseas, but I could also teach about preparation to go overseas, information for new sales reps and teach Security--which is my current profession but I miss teaching like I did overseas. America pays less than Taiwan and China. SO it simply made no sense to teach in America when a base salary in Sales is much better. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Has the pay structure changed on Teachable/Skillshare?

Yep! It tells you how many 'premium' minutes have been watched each day, which is what contributes to your payout. Once you're a teacher, you'll have access to a 'teacher stats' area where all of that is broken down for you - minutes watched, past payouts, affiliate earnings, etc.

@EveryTuesday

Hey Linda! When I shifted, any new (long) course I made for teachable, I would do an ‘intro’ version and post that on skillshare. So if my long course had 10 projects, I’d only post the first 2 or 3 on skillshare. Since you can’t unpublished on skillshare, you could always adapt/edit your existing skillshare course after you’re up and running on teachable.

You could (and I do for my lower priced courses). Some people prefer an a-la-carte option.
