Yes! I wondered why anyone would "overwinter" a pepper plant. But then I tried growing peppers from seed. They did grow but it took a very long time and by the time I set them out, I got only a few peppers. My peppers are inside now and we will see what happens next spring when they are back in my little garden!

Just wanted to mention that taking the leaves and putting them in the pot on top of the dirt is important to replenish the plant of it's own nourishment when it is watered. This is what would happen if these plants were wintering outside in weather that did not freeze. I thank for this informative video.
@1FISH
@1FISH 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's quite correct. Peppers don't lose a huge amount of leaves all at once, so they probably don't accumulate a lot of leaves on the ground below them. Nearby trees are probably a more likely source of leaf matter on the ground. If you want to help your plants, try imitating that. Take fallen tree leaves and use them as mulch.

You said it…we strive for success!! I could use some with my dormant jalapeño. I covered it for the winter (I’m in zone 9 B) after trimming it way back last year. It’s been dormant all summer!! I know it’s alive. It’s still green. But no leaves, much less peppers. Any suggestions? My thought was to dig it up, put it under the covered patio for the winter, and try again next spring.

New subscribers here 👋 Thanks for sharing your knowledges I already overwintered 12 chili/peppers and lost 3 of them… Yes overwatering is a common issue But I think you forget to talk about the most important problem THE PESTS ! Aphids of course as mention by a previous comment which is very difficult to fully eradicate But the worst one is the fungus gnats ! I mean they are the first to appear each time you bring outdoor soil inside your house. Even I have cleaned all the roots with my pressure hose, sprayed them with diluted peroxyde oxygen, even my new indoor pot mix was sterilized 5 mm in microwave, even I tried to not to over water it, even I have top sprayed the soil with neem oil to kill any larvae/eggs or crawling/flying insects I still had a hard time with the pest issue. Warm condition, no predators for them your house and especially your peppers becomes their paradise 😅

I was able to over winter a douglah 7-pot and an Arpaho cayenne last year. I took cuttings from both plant and was able to have 3 each hardy plants at the beginning of the season. I liked the peppers but didn't feel like buying a new pack of seeds the following year. I'll be starting the over wintering process in a few weeks. Great tips! Thanks for sharing.

Could you possibly do a follow up with how much water you give the plants over the course of the winter? I have never been able to overwinter outside plants for some reason, and just looking for as much detail as possible. Other than the lack of watering info, top-notch video!
@TeachaMantoFish

Watering is so tricky, I can say that most people err on too much water. Basically smother with love. That’s even easier to do indoors. The timing needs change at the plant changes, indoor air gets dryer, etc. There are so many variables. I can tell you the best advice is 1. Don’t overwater, it’s easy to do. 2. Only water when the soil and plant tells you it needs it. I’ve even gone so far as to only water when I can do daily checks and there is wilting changes in the plant. You’ve got a day or two to apply water when water thirst evidence is showing. It is the best way to ensure you aren’t overwatering.

@@TeachaMantoFish Thank you so much for the fast reply. Yes, I actually started all of my pepper plants back in February and wound up with some with edema because I had been overwatering… Some of these pepper plants have huge trunks like small trees, and I just want to try to save that momentum for next year. I don’t think we have room for all 24 peppers inside, so I’m going to experiment with keeping some in the poly tunnel with some extra heat at night possibly. I really appreciate your style a video with the succinct, positive message. Thanks, again!

@@TeachaMantoFish We've never tried this but after watching many videos, we are going to give this a go this year. The one thing I think, when it comes to watering is, it shouldn't really need a lot. Because the plants are indoors, 1)they won't be exposed to full direct sunlight in warmer temps, 2) no wind. Hence very little evaporation. Also, if using a grow light, it will be on a timer mimicking outdoor hours of sunlight. The are after all, trying to have a nap. 😊

Thanks for the video. Great topic. Overwintering 17 peppers this year. First time trying it. Also planning next year's garden. Typically first year peppers grow about 24 to 36 inches wide. But, I suspect a second year pepper may grow much wider. When I replant, how far apart should I space small (cayenne, fish, cherry bomb), medium (jalapeno, habanero) , and large sized peppers (hatch, marconi, poblano)?

I had about 20 pepper plants, 1 eggplant, and 4 okra plants that I just did this to. I gave the eggplant and okra a 1 gallon pot each but the peppers I trimmed them way back to be only about 12-16” tall and I put 3-4 of them to each 1 gallon pot. I put a couple inches of potting mix in the bottom and then layed each pepper in with the stems around the perimeter and the roots overlapping each other in the middle and covered it the rest of the way with the potting mix. I figure there will be some shock when I transplant them next spring so why worry about the roots getting tangled a bit over the winter. The trade-off is that with the space I saved I can set them in the window all winter. So far it has been 3 days and they are all still green. 😅

My advice would be to leave a few to go orange and use these for seed-stock to be sure the seeds have fully matured if you were inclined to keep seeds... if not you may notice a slight difference in flavour/sweetness (?). Idk why but my peppers were doing great after I repotted them for a couple weeks, started growing a bunch of leaves and decided to move them inside under a light since it seemed like it adjusted, but for some reason it looked dry and dead, hard to tell since the whole plant was woody from the long season. garage never got close to 45 until last week but they looked sad since mid December when it was still warm. I have a small heater in there to raise the temp a bit since I knew it would get cold during this time. Funny roots look fine and not dead so IDK we'll see, I don't have much hope though. It was warm and bright enough for my small pepper seedling that grew from seed inside the garage though

Interesting I would look at the usual suspects: 1. Water - too much too little, it is actually easier to give too much than too little 2. Light 3. Temperature - very temp sensitive, it doesn’t take much to do damage 4. Insects
