I used to fall asleep in class quite frequently when I was in high school, but my teachers never got mad or teased me, they would always subtly wake me up without drawing attention and ask, "Are you alright?" They seemed really worried, which made me feel pretty awful each time it happened. Turns out I wasn't alright, I had a sleep disorder! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, teachers!

One of my teachers did something similar when we were in seventh grade. She had us all quietly leave the room, then she turned off the classroom lights and set the clock to 5:30p. She then left the room, came back in and made some noise which woke the student up and then acted surprised that he was still in the classroom. She had him totally convinced he'd missed his bus and would have to call his parents to come get him. This was back in early '80's so there were no cell phones and the kid may not have even had a watch on. It was priceless. :)

***** for some people, "their own time" is still finishing homework, projects... like the above commentor says, you have no way of knowing that students' personal life. in my program (IB) students every once in a while will fall asleep. this is something teachers realize and expect. most of us have school from 7am-4:21pm everyday. then we have about 1 hour of homework for each 5 classes (minimum on average) and on top of that many students are expected to schedule in time for volunteering, action, and creativity (CAS is part of our program). when our educational system stops failing us by expecting a ridiculous commitment of 5 hours homework, class time, and min. extracurricular time not to mention UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS then we'll get back to you.

Nope. My ap euro history class is really boring because its all lecture and test. I could fall asleep if i wanted too, but i know better. Yes i can agree school does start early, but with everything else it works better. What would happen with sports and extra curricular activities? End at 11pm?? And still have homework to do? See the thing is how much sleep u actually get, not when school starts

And if this kid isn't getting enough sleep, he needs to re evaluate what he is doing. Maybe hes taking harder courses and needs to drop so work and testing is easier. Maybe not have a job so he can do homework. Maybe he plays video games or is on a phone? Stop those as well. Idk his situation in life, but i do know u need to make things work so you dont fall asleep. If u can get 6+hours a night then ur fine. If not u need to rethink and reorganize.

I was guilty of that in middle sadly... multiple times... Had a teacher I hated, talked about himself for 75% of the class off track, and gave us homework at the end over what we SHOULD have been learning. Not to mention he was one of those big guys that would be eating really sloppily while in the middle of a parent teach conference in front of you, while talking and chewing. It surprises me now that that type of person was not just a TV stereotype/exaggeration....... Gave up on it and multiple times just slept through it until I wake up in the dark classroom and leave lol... Weird feeling. (tired = type crazy, my bad)

Lily Poppy at my school they can take your phone but they're not allowed to look through it. Also at my school you weren't allowed to have a skateboard if you didn't have a locker because then you'd be carrying it everywhere with you and they don't want to increase the chances of people using them in school and messing up the floor.

look at him, guy was really pissed off ))) I never slept in school, learning is easy first - try to visualise and understand what teacher tells about (ask him, to make picture more clear, also teachers like questions, because it shows them the feedback from the audience) then you will not have to worry abot remembering it... unfortunately living in russia and being bright and clever won't make you much happier here, the salary of teachers is very very low, thats why resourcefull people go to work for western countries... so in order to avoid a serious competition you just have to bear in mind - dont sleep in class!
