The religious makeup of Japan is a bit unusual, in a good way really, as of 2017, 70.4% identify as Shinto, 69.8% identify as Buddhist, 1.5% identify as Christian and 6.9% identify as Other... as you may have noticed, that's more than 100%... that's because in Japan, different religions are not viewed as mutually exclusive. It's pretty normal to go to a Shinto shrine to ask a Kami (spirit/god) for luck on a school exam, celebrate a Christian Christmas and partake of a Buddhist festival.

@@TeacherandCoach2020 shinto is a religion of the world (kami in trees, objects, mountains, etc). buddhism is a religion of the self (meditation, enlightenment, self-reflection, etc). in that way, the two aren't mutually exclusive. japan managed to have the two religions co-exist. especially since in shinto, exceptional people can be considered to be, or become, kami (recall the term "sword saint"), and buddhism is seen as a path toward that.

Nagasaki wasn't even the intended target that day. But cloud cover over the intended target meant they had to pick another place on the spur of the moment. That was Nagasaki. "The crew of the B-29 Bockscar was not supposed to have targeted Nagasaki, a port city on Japan's eastern coast. Cloud cover forced the mission's commander to re-route the attack from its intended objective, the industrial hub Kokura. A third city, Niigata, was also on the target list that day, according to Collie. "
@wwoods66
@wwoods66 3 жыл бұрын
Sort of. Nagasaki was the planned secondary target, in case Kokura was obscured by weather. Niigata was the fourth of the four cities on the target list, being the most distant. It wasn't on the plan for _that_ mission.
@iamadamsusername

Nagasaki was indeed a target, due to the surrounding hills (If I remember what I read correctly) The hills around the city would essentially wall in the energy shock wave, creating an even more powerful explosion.

Actually walking over areas that you no longer can, is not due to icebergs, even though it happens in ice ages. It's just that there is less water, due to so much of it being ice that is trapped on land. The Japanese, as well as the Native Americans, came across land, not ice.

I think what he meant by "You could walk to it" is that it was connected to the main land in the beginning. It became separated when the glaciers melted at the end of the ice age and the seas rose. P.S. The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively.

fun, or rather a sad, fact is that Japan was already preparing to surrender, even before the atomic bombs fell. Due to seer shock and troubles with communication, they first got their official surrender out only after nagasaki... at least they got it out a few days before the planned bombing of another city (there was supposed to be 3 atomic bombings on Japan, because for some reason people got high on the thought of mass bombing civilians with new experimental bombs back in those days :/ )

Another Normandy-style invasion in Japan would have been _way_ bloodier than the two atomic bombings. Granted the bombings were largely civilian casualties, however, Japanese citizens would likely have fought tooth and nail for their Emperor much like Red Dawn-esque scenarios in the US. IIRC, military planners actually used the bomb(s) as a way to reduce casualties and end the war sooner.

bombed it to show russia that theyt had atomic bombns and what they could do.. those 2 targets were perfect since they wern't war zones meaning those billion dollar bombers with atomic bombs in them wouldnt get shot down... it was too risky to fly them over military zones so they decided lets just bomb a bunch of civilians to show russia what we have so once the war is over russia wont wanna fuck with us... but then russia got the threat and made atomic bombs of their own. point being the u.s did a shitty thing killing civilians living a normal life that had nothing to do with the war. Japan was going to surrender without the atomic bombs... russia was done fighting germany and they moved on to japan... japan was afraid of russia theyd 100% rather surrender to the u.s and the allies over surrendering to russia. so they would hav e surrendered before russia got there even if the bombs wern't dropped.

They really undermined why the bombs were dropped in this video by saying the US wanted to test the bombs something the US had already done. If they kept fighting Russia would had fully joined in the war, chances are the whole island would had been fired bomb which would had been bad seeing how nearly everything was made of wood and Japan is covered in foliage and trees.

many reasons. Future bombing of Japan, potential US casualties in an invasion (millions), potential Japanese civilian losses in an invasion (millions), preventing Soviet from conquering all of Korea and North Japan now that their armies from Germany were freed up, need to end the war to start rebuilding including Europe by transforming allied economies away from a total war military economy. Dropping the Bombs was by FAR the MOST RATIONAL decision made in World War 2 by any nation. NOT dropping the Bombs would have been a crime against humanity in hindsight.

Fun fact, the dropping of the bombs was NOT intended to "save a million American lives." Meeting minutes with Trump declassified in the 90s reveal that Japan was ready to give up anyway. The real reason to drop the bomb was to have Japan surrender before Russia officially broke the non-aggression treaty with Japan, which would have resulted in a mess in Asia splitting up the spoils of war. There are a lot of declassified material, I believe the Truman library online has released all the docs. The Smithsonian was blackmailed by veteran orgs and senators into not having their original planned exhibit, which would have revealed Truman's real motivations and made America look like a-holes. And yes, I know what we're taught in schools. In before someone accuses me of being unpatriotic blah blah blah.
