Funny enough that when you go to Copenhagen, many of the drunk people you see are Swedish. Just like you'll meet a lot of drunk Norwegians at the bar's on holidays during daytime. We are Vikings. We drink, eat and fight. And to quote the Danish Queen. "In the past history we (the Nordics) have been good friends and sometimes not at all. We have had peace and wars but thankfully we have been close for a very long time now".
@anouk6644

It’s interesting and yet not surprising that in the Netherlands we have the same mindset as Denmark and other Nordic countries. For Janteloven we have sayings that are loosely translated as “act normal, you’re already acting crazy enough” (doe normal, dan doe je al gek genoeg) and “don’t stand out of the crowd” (je kop niet boven het maaiveld uitsteken). Hygge comes close to the also difficult translatable “gezellig” (cozy, warm, spending quality time with loved ones). Both are ingrained in Dutch society.

Great Britain was populated by the Judes (danish), the Anglos (danish) and the Saxons (germans), a mixture of largely danish people, both Judes and Aglos (As in Anglo saxons)are of danish origins, on the way, they mixed with the Dutch and Flemish, this is why dutch and danish is so close, and many countless words in english are derived from danish as well. I once worked together with a good dutch colleague , and every time he spoke in dutch on the phone, I almost understood everything, or at least the context of what was being said, it annoyed him alot, ha ha ha...Big hug and kisses from Denmark to you Holland...!

@@KenKobayashiRasmussen There is no real distinguishable Dutch DNA and a lot of Dutch (living above the Rhine river) who don’t really have ancestors from other countries have a mixture of Scandinavian, English/Scottish and some North-West European DNA. This supports your comment. Much love back to my Danish brothers and sisters! For me it’s easier to decipher written danish than the spoken language. Would love to learn it.

The whole "things are expensive in the Nordic Countries" is a bit mileading, cuz you have to take into account the difference in currency and the value of each. So it might be expansive for people from the US, but for people who are native to the Nordic countries, it's not that expensive.

Norway and Sweden are like Germany and Austria, Denmark is like the majority of German speaking Switzerland and Iceland is like the canton of Wallis - their part of German speaking Switzerland, but nobody understands them :-P The siren test is something we know aswell. My favourite bit comedy sketch about Denmark is the Norwegian sketch about the Danish Language kzbin.info/www/bejne/qV7QgKxui7p4eM0 Copenhagen is one of the few countries where I needed to carry a map because when I first visited and knew no Danish placenames and locations were pronounced with "a hot potato in the mouth" and I needed to point to the map even though the conversation was in English. Denmark was in the second wave of joining the EEC as it was then in 1973 with UK, Ireland and up until they voted against it for the first time Norway. I had friends in Malmö and visited regularly and always used Copenhagen Airport. That was before the Öresund Bridge when you had to take the ferry or hydrofoil over to Malmö

I live near where the danish queens cousin lives. He was supposed to be king of denmark, until they changed the heirarchy so that women could succeed the throne after a king (the previous king only had daughters, so the old form of succession would make the oldest man in the royal family king, be it cousin, or even a cousins cousin) And i've met that guy several times while shopping for food at the local store. Even the royals live by janteloven to a degree.

As a Dane, I can sort of kind of a little bit understand spoken Swedish and Norwegian (ironically I have an easier time understanding Swedish in writing; I enjoyed reading Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy in the original language) - but I generally prefer to switch to English just to avoid potential misunderstandings, since practically everyone in the Nordic Countries are fluent in English. Also, the thing with the "potato in the mouth" is absolutely true, and we don't even deny it. Danish is kind of ridiculous, and you absolutely have a better time communicating in Danish if you just mumble half the words.

I'm Norwegian and live at the west coast of the country. When we are in Denmark we can communicate rather well with the Danes (as long as both parties slow down a little bit and avoid certain words from our local dialect) but most of the Danes we talk to think we are swedes because of our dialekt. All three languages are very similar, but in my experience it is often harder for the danes to tell wether a person is from Sweden or Norway because the the languages are so similar (verbally). Funny about the written language though, I've always found it easier to read in Danish than in Swedish.

0:19 well in my own non-northern European opinion it's because Finland and Denmark have had quite the different relationship with Sweden throughout their history. Denmark has been an equal rival to Sweden just like Britain and France, while Finland has been a colony of Sweden so not treated duper well by them and their culture might still be bitter about it just like Ireland and Britain.

Interesting and very spot on reaction, thanks for sharing. _FUN FACT:_ Since 1658 when Swedish Karl X Gustav with his army crossed over the ice to invade Denmark we still have a law (part of the peace treaty?) that makes it legal for any Dane to *beat a Swede with a stick* should he be encountered *walking over the ice.* Beware of that, dear Swedish brothers and sisters, should you intend to go ice skating here. And remember to enter the country by bridge or ferry, don't walk over the frozen straits. _NOTE 1:_ Remember you are allowed only to *beat* the Swede with a stick, *not kill* him; such task would be reserved for the military. _NOTE 2:_ In the English city of *York* they have a similar but more lethal law. There it is still legal to *kill a Scotsman* should he be encountered *within the city limits* _AND_ *wearing bow and arrow.* No bow and arrow, or not a Scotsman? Sorry you can't kill him.

An old law in Denmark says. If a swede cross the ice of öresund, the dane can hit them with sticks. That's why the swedes wanted the bridge. lol
