It actually doesn't make much sense because the genre fantasy has unrealistic universe settings like magic and imaginary creatures, but it doesn't mean it can't have realistic human drama or conflicts.
@Zeppongola
@Zeppongola 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-bl8cd2xd4g I think the point is more that it's unreasonable to *demand* a fantasy story include those elements. A fantasy story is something that embraces suspension of disbelief to allow for fundamentally unrealistic narratives; there's no rule saying you can't treat this as "real world logic, just with magic and elves", but there's also no reason why that suspension of disbelief can't extend to have deaths only occur at narratively satisfying moments, rather than at random intervals for the sake of real-world realism.
@user-bl8cd2xd4g
@user-bl8cd2xd4g 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zeppongola In this battle, George Martin disses Tolkien's works for being predictable and boring, which is a criticism on the narrative, and he never said anything about the genre being fantasy. Tolkien counterargues that "the characters shouldn't die randomly" which is also a criticism on the narrative, but his reasoning is that "the genre is called fantasy" and therefore "it should be unrealistic" which does not logically connect because the "unrealistic" features should only apply to the settings and not how the plot delivers.

I love the C.S Lewis line a lot, they were such good friends in college that they even borrowed stuff from each other for their books and may have based characters off of each other. One good example is in LOTR there’s an inn called The Prancing Pony in a town called Bree while in the Narnia Chronicles there’s a character called Bree who is a talking prancing pony.

They also wrote comments to support each other's books. Tolkien wrote an intro commentary for Lewis' Space Trilogy and the two reviewed each other's works constantly. Also Professor Digory was inspired by Tolkien and Treebeard was based off of Lewis.

@@dragonangl2161 that's true. although Lewis chose Catholicism and not Anglicanism. However Lewis was a bit more liberal than most Catholics so Tolkien and Lewis agreed on lots of things. And Lewis later turned out to be one of the most important Christian writers especially specializing in Apologetics which has nothing to do with apologizing but refuting atheism or other Christian denominations. In short lying with the bible and science (or rather willfull misconstructions of it like denying the existence of the sun when milking the second law of thermodynamics to "prove" evolution can't be true. Yes a higher ordered state needs energy, meaning building up a complex organism takes energy, but luckily we got a massive fusion reactor just blowing out energy like crazy) to prove Catholicism is the only truth and you deserve to go to hell for your stupidity if you don't see that. But I just think his characters aren’t imbued with plot armor like so many are. That makes his writing so much more compelling in a way because in order to write a character out of a situation, it has to actually be plausible and not just some coincidence or fate.

CS Lewis and Tolkien were actually friends, and I think Lewis recommended Tolkien for a Nobel prize for literature. JRR Tolkien was passed over for the 1961 Nobel literature prize after the storytelling in his Lord of the Rings trilogy was described as second rate. The Nobel prize jury said "the result has not in any way measured up to storytelling of the highest quality."

I don't see why people give Tolkien's first lines so much credit. Everything he accused Martin of ripping off him, he ripped off previous mythology. SO a pretty weak opening line that only seems strong if you don't think about it. Ditto for his brag about his book sale numbers. Duh, you've only had a what, 50 year head start on Game of Thrones? Not surprised that overall you've sold more books. I'd be curious to know how many books Tolkien sold in the same amount of time Martin's been active, willing to bet it's a lot less of an impressive brag then.

you forget that G R.R. Martin based his books a lot on real history events like the red wedding is the scotish black banquet, the wall is like Hadrian's Wall the whole war of 5 kings is like War of the Roses (Lannisters are like Lancasters and Starks are like Yorks and Baratheon is Plantagenet) And of course with plentiful intermariage between European royal houses incest happened too (not to mention that maimings and torture were common in middle ages) .As for Droggon Danaerys used as names for her dragon brood based on her brother and her family history and of course her husband's name

"we don't need the backstory of every fuckin tree branch" is a reference to Tolkien went above and beyond when it came to his writing. He invented whole languages for his work. Every single Man, Woman, Child, Flower, Bird, location had a story. Tolkien created a full world. If you asked Tolkien about something he shouldn't have considered like "Whatever happened to the tavern girl who brought Strider his drink" He would give you her entire life story birth to death. if he brought up a flower you're going to learn about what it means, how it reproduces, is it an annual or a perennial, etc. Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion is half fantasy novel half guidebook.

By pointing out that George is under 50 shades Tolkien also attacks the point about him needing more sex in his works. George had it but still can't get past a porn without plot work. While Tolkien cruises in a realm usually reserved for religious text (and Harry Potter) in terms of how distributed his work is.

Edgy plots, dangerous villains... for the non-human threats in the Song of Ice and Fire, you have dragons and the White Walkers. Smaug, the weakest and smallest of Tolkien's dragons, would in my opinion outweigh all of Martin's dragons. As for the WW's, their threat is more that of zombies, they just don't stay dead. One on one, I'd say Shelob, the minor subplot villainess (intelligent giant venomous spider) would be far more terrifying. And that last point you put out I entirely agree with - we need the rest of the book series for SoIaF!

Might have been said already, but, I'll say it just in case: At the very end you picked up on the way Tolkien names off the three books but you missed a bit, likely due to it being spread over two lines instead of one and you pausing right as he says the second part. "Fellow" "Too Towering" "Return of the King" You got Too Towering and Return of the King, but you missed a bit on 'Fellow'. Tolkien hammers the line "You can't reach this fellow", which is what you picked up, but he quick-starts the very next line of 'shit, I'm Too Towering!" -- So you've actually got "Fellow-shit", and the way he blurs the lines he says it basically as one word: Fellowship. Hope that makes sense. :)

Ok GRRM got annihilated but one thing in his defence: Drogon is actually Tolkien-inspired in the first place. Drogon was named after Khal Drogo who in turn in inspired by Drogo Baggins, Frodo's dad. George wasnt THAT lazy.

Tolkien really won this battle easily. I would say though that I don' t aggree with your point that martin kills people for shockvalue. Especially in the books where every death is maybe shocking, since main characters aren't spared, but it is definitely set up to make logical sense in the world martin built. For example red weeding was very much teased a lot and for example ned starks death didn't feel cheap. My point would be(except for season 8) that when a character should die in the world of Game of Thrones he probably dies even if it's a main character(like very little plot armor).

Gotta be fair to the Unfinisher of Books (as much as he was properly roasted by Tolkien). George Martin did NOT dodge the draft. He was drafted and served as a conscientious objector in theater in Viet Nam. But as a "consci" he worked desk jobs out of combat areas. Hence the "LARP" charge: he was in uniform but not in combat.

Listening Martin to try and finght the true king of fantasy made me almoast feel bad for him. Almost, I think his books are kinda boring, never seen a single Game of Thrones episode (again, the books put me to sleep so what can you whip out from those?). The hype around the series also put me off since all they talk about seemed to be the sex scenes, which makes it seem like theres little besides that to keep attention in. Lets keep it fair, the first LotR movie gave a little disappointment when they switched Arwen into the place of Glorfindel as a fan service type of move, but aside that I liked how it was done. The other movies went well too. And I liked how the Hobbit was made into more mature style than the actual book, which was geared towards children, was written. And as a player of Lord of the Rings Online, which has been around since 2007, I can say there's a huge fanbase around.
