It actually doesn't make much sense because the genre fantasy has unrealistic universe settings like magic and imaginary creatures, but it doesn't mean it can't have realistic human drama or conflicts.
@Zeppongola2 жыл бұрын
@@user-bl8cd2xd4g I think the point is more that it's unreasonable to *demand* a fantasy story include those elements. A fantasy story is something that embraces suspension of disbelief to allow for fundamentally unrealistic narratives; there's no rule saying you can't treat this as "real world logic, just with magic and elves", but there's also no reason why that suspension of disbelief can't extend to have deaths only occur at narratively satisfying moments, rather than at random intervals for the sake of real-world realism.
@user-bl8cd2xd4g2 жыл бұрын
@@Zeppongola In this battle, George Martin disses Tolkien's works for being predictable and boring, which is a criticism on the narrative, and he never said anything about the genre being fantasy. Tolkien counterargues that "the characters shouldn't die randomly" which is also a criticism on the narrative, but his reasoning is that "the genre is called fantasy" and therefore "it should be unrealistic" which does not logically connect because the "unrealistic" features should only apply to the settings and not how the plot delivers.

Thank you for reacting . George R.R Martine only has written 19 books in his life.

Whoa! Haven't seen this in years, and now just noticed JRR Tolkien served in the battle of the Somme!

It didn't just end with "Fellow", that's why he said "Fellow...shit,..." (fellowship)

By pointing out that George is under 50 shades Tolkien also attacks the point about him needing more sex in his works. George had it but still can't get past a porn without plot work. While Tolkien cruises in a realm usually reserved for religious text (and Harry Potter) in terms of how distributed his work is.

Edgy plots, dangerous villains... for the non-human threats in the Song of Ice and Fire, you have dragons and the White Walkers. Smaug, the weakest and smallest of Tolkien's dragons, would in my opinion outweigh all of Martin's dragons. As for the WW's, their threat is more that of zombies, they just don't stay dead. One on one, I'd say Shelob, the minor subplot villainess (intelligent giant venomous spider) would be far more terrifying. And that last point you put out I entirely agree with - we need the rest of the book series for SoIaF!

Might have been said already, but, I'll say it just in case: At the very end you picked up on the way Tolkien names off the three books but you missed a bit, likely due to it being spread over two lines instead of one and you pausing right as he says the second part. "Fellow" "Too Towering" "Return of the King" You got Too Towering and Return of the King, but you missed a bit on 'Fellow'. Tolkien hammers the line "You can't reach this fellow", which is what you picked up, but he quick-starts the very next line of 'shit, I'm Too Towering!" -- So you've actually got "Fellow-shit", and the way he blurs the lines he says it basically as one word: Fellowship. Hope that makes sense. :)

George could also ask Amon Amarth which is both a band and the elvish name of mount Doom

Ok GRRM got annihilated but one thing in his defence: Drogon is actually Tolkien-inspired in the first place. Drogon was named after Khal Drogo who in turn in inspired by Drogo Baggins, Frodo's dad. George wasnt THAT lazy.

I know people get pissed about The Hobbit being 3 movies, and I may be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that was because they added a lot of the Silmarillion and his other later works clarifying what he had mentioned before

its so insane we might had never gotten any of the lord of the ring books. if i remember right i read somewhere that tolken was telling his kids bedtime stories and annoyed at being pointed out contradictions he wrote the stories down into books so he wont forget what he told previusly. or something similar like that

Tolkien really won this battle easily. I would say though that I don' t aggree with your point that martin kills people for shockvalue. Especially in the books where every death is maybe shocking, since main characters aren't spared, but it is definitely set up to make logical sense in the world martin built. For example red weeding was very much teased a lot and for example ned starks death didn't feel cheap. My point would be(except for season 8) that when a character should die in the world of Game of Thrones he probably dies even if it's a main character(like very little plot armor).

The fifty shades of Gray bar could also be a quadruple because it could be an innuendo for Game of Thrones being under fifty shades of Gray. Maybe that's just me...

Gotta be fair to the Unfinisher of Books (as much as he was properly roasted by Tolkien). George Martin did NOT dodge the draft. He was drafted and served as a conscientious objector in theater in Viet Nam. But as a "consci" he worked desk jobs out of combat areas. Hence the "LARP" charge: he was in uniform but not in combat.

George R.R. Martin also did some work, on a Marvel comic, in the 80s. My friend has a comic, & his name is one of the many, in it.

Listening Martin to try and finght the true king of fantasy made me almoast feel bad for him. Almost, I think his books are kinda boring, never seen a single Game of Thrones episode (again, the books put me to sleep so what can you whip out from those?). The hype around the series also put me off since all they talk about seemed to be the sex scenes, which makes it seem like theres little besides that to keep attention in. Lets keep it fair, the first LotR movie gave a little disappointment when they switched Arwen into the place of Glorfindel as a fan service type of move, but aside that I liked how it was done. The other movies went well too. And I liked how the Hobbit was made into more mature style than the actual book, which was geared towards children, was written. And as a player of Lord of the Rings Online, which has been around since 2007, I can say there's a huge fanbase around.

Since you said you had George to win, the second Tolkien started I could not stop laughing. Instant 0 for 21 and it was obvious. To be fair it was a really one sided matchup. I don't think people realized how one sided it would be.
