By the yellow shirt teacher’s logic, we don’t need school after 8th grade. Technically speaking, nobody needs calculus in their life. It’s not an necessity. Learning the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is more than enough. No it’s not. School feels like a task because most teachers make it seem that way. There are teachers who have made learning fun. In India, I had one literature teacher who taught us so well, I didn’t even have to study and I got in the 94% in literature. With the right teacher, you can definitely learn better with scoring better marks being a side effect of that .

Uh, lady, we have calculators in our pockets literally every day. If we don't know how to multiply, we can do it on the calculator. Besides, learning basic math, reading and writing are understandable. But how do you explain all this other stuff we learn that has no use? Beyond multiplication, division, subtraction, addition? Beyond calculating square footage, radius or circumference? Or fractions? Measurements, temperature, money. Outside of those, what do we really need to know of math unless we're going into a profession that requires more of it? I don't use the algebra I was forced to learn. I do use Pre Algebra every day. So why did I have to take Algebra twice in order to get my degree? Because it was required. Never once explaining when I'd need to know how to solve a polynomial or a quadratic equation. Not to mention how much I hated word problems. I simply could not 'get' how to do them. I am stronger at learning languages than I am in math, yet it was deemed important. Why?

My passion is somewhat connected with math and logical thinking. I was always the kid that was beyond others in his class. While my classmates were learning basic geometry in primary school, I was already learning algebra. Same with computer knowledge. When my classmates didn't know how to turn off a computer, I already became almost fluent in a programming language. I hated and still hate school for not giving me the right things to learn. I always wanted to challenge myself to my limits, but school always gave me work "hard enough for my age". I am still deciding if I should go homeschooling or not. School is the reason I'm introverted nowadays too. I hate you education system, I truly hate you.

Yeah if it weren’t for my god mother and cousin I’d be dead because my math teacher was so mean to me and yelled at me everyday for not getting a math problem right called me stupid my Spanish teacher didn’t understand how I couldn’t get Spanish being Mexican and treated me like I was a animal for that and my stagecraft teacher sexually harassed me so yeah I understand we’re his coming from plus I was being bullied by other students and abused by my 1st boyfriend at the time and the teachers just added to that pain my god mom helped the police department they feared her though she was a sweetheart so when she found out about how I was being treated she put the fear in them teachers let me tell yeah because the next week there attitude changed with me but I still chose to leave and get homeschooled tired of the bullying and abuse once I left I got better grades my mental health got better my relationships started healing with family and friends I graduated early 1yr early actually which shocked those 3 teachers telling me I’ll never and I’m a failure all the time the only person besides my mom that ever believed in me was my God mom RIH f cancer I graduated 2016 she passed 2019 the only teacher I loved and still say hi to from time to time is my kindergarten teacher mrs menzie loved her so much sweetest teacher ever she retired when I was 16 I’m 23 now I haven’t talk to her since I was 17 though but she knows I loved her like family because I told her the last time I talked to her and I did like my college art teacher mr. c I never knew how to say his name so he let us call him mr. C we got close because I saved him from becoming a alcoholic I had just lost my Tia (my moms baby sister) from cirrhosis of the liver and I saw him come to school drunk and I scolded him not on purpose but because I had just went to my aunts funeral the day before and seeing him in that state I snapped and he was upset at first getting scolded by someone young but the next day he thanked me and he left his job to get clean came back 2 months later looking so much better he said I saved him from becoming his father he had just lost his daughter and was draining his feelings but my outburst saved him I reminded him of his daughter and we continued to be friends since he fixed his marriage and moved from Fresno to actually do actual art so only 2 teachers I actually liked in my life that weren’t mean or gross towards me.

Ok. I'll be the one voice who will say that the teacher in the yellow shirt was making fair points. She WAS listening and giving constructive critical responses. They just weren't the responses most of the commenters here wanted to hear. You do need knowledge in addition to creativity. You absolutely will be hired because of what you know and not just your creativity. Creativity and compassion aren't enough. You do need concrete, factual, technical knowledge. Perfect example: I am a musician (pianist/organist). A CREATIVE profession. A young and learning musician absolutely needs drills... two octave scales, arpeggios, Hanons, Czernys, etc. The most frustrating situation for a creative to be in is to have the urge to be creative but not have the technical skills/knowledge to actually facilitate that creative inspiration. So you have all this inspiration, but you're stuck sounding like dog water because you didn't think the practice, drills, repetition, and boring stuff was worth your time. I know way too many musicians who could've been brilliant, but they gave up because they felt like every lesson was supposed to be this super fun, entertaining jam session. Then they blamed it on their teacher "making music boring and miserable." ADVICE: Build your mental stamina and endurance as a learner. Every day in your educational process is not going to be a super engaging, fun, interesting day. Some days, you will just take notes in SS, or work out some equations in Math, or read a passage and write a couple of paragraphs in ELA. That's ok. Do the work. You DO need the boring stuff. Trust me.
