I like to call it a "bubble train." It runs on bubbles. Rules include: stay on the train (in line/not cutting), don't let the train break (don't create a gap in the line), "If the bubble pops, the train stops" (We stop and get quiet if someone talks)

I can’t say thank you enough. My daughter just started teaching first grade this year. You are a god send. I have tagged her with your channel. She is really on the struggle bus and I keep saying you can do this. She was crying at the end of the first week, it is getting better. I keep telling her things will improve in time. Lots of prayers are being said and I think God sent us you. ❤😊

Thanks for encouraging her and encouraging me. It is no coincidence that you found my channel for your daughter. I’ve cried plenty of times while I was a teacher. Even the very best teachers cry. In fact it’s a pretty good indicator that you want your teaching day to be amazing for both teach and student alike and when things are hard and frustrating you know that you need to pivot and make some changes. It’s what teachers do best. Big hugs to your daughter. It will get better.

I love your strategy of using birthday info to line up! When I summer school, I had students line up by ABC order of 1st names. If somebody was absent, they still figured out how to line up. In my regular class, Helper Jobs are Line Leader, Light Person, Door Holder and Caboose. That dictates 4 line positions. I also line up in 2 lines - boy line / girl line. They must walk beside their adjacent line which keeps people from lagging behind. Thanks for your helpful ideas to incorporate this year.

@solangelucas2011 to be honest with you my classroom was always on the “noisy” side. BUT when I needed quiet I could always get it. The techniques I used are in a bunch of videos. Specifically a the chant and song videos, the morning meeting, and the first hour of school videos. Just look in the classroom management playlist on my channel and you’ll find it. Remember it’s a good thing when kids are talking. When they are talking they are learning. And it’s a really good thing to be able to get there attention and talk to them (and they actually listen) during instruction and lessons. Remember to keep your lessons short, engaging and focused. That will help with the chatter.

Not a chant but--The bubble in the mouth works. “Put a bubble in your mouth.” Then you talk and then you say “Put the bubble in your hand, let it go… see you later bubble”. If you can make it fun and a little silly they will engage with you more.

I hpoe you'd understand my message. Thanks a lot !

Thanks for the question. I have a list of students and beside each name is a number. The the student and their number doesn’t change. Example: 1 Mark, 2 Jess, 3 Emily etc Then on week or day 1 Mark is my line leader. His position is first in line. Behind him are Jess and Emily etc. then the next week or day (however you want to do it) is 2Jess is line leader followed by Emily. Mark has moved to the last person in the line. So I just use my list for reference and rotate the kids through the line so everyone gets a turn and they also stay in order in line. They always line up in sequence according to who is first in line. I hope that helps. 🙂 So

What if you are lining them up in a different location, such as in the cafeteria? Would they just have to memorize their numbers and their order?
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun 11 күн бұрын
After awhile they do know the order. It’s harder to line up without the visual marks but they can do it. Or they can just line up. But that requires practice too.

Where do you place the numbers? On the floor? On the wall? How do the numbers work when they are not in their classroom? How do you give them numbers with the Happy Helper?
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun 2 ай бұрын
In the classroom I had carpet and the “dots” are velcro so they go on the floor. ( easy to move) When they are out of the classroom they just line- up. But as the year goes on they know their order and Who’s in front and in back. So they could line up in order. It’s one of the reasons it’s nice to do this system. They can line themselves up in order and tell you if anyone is missing. And for the happy helper I just moved down the list on my rossiter. And my class list was posted so I just laminated it and put a little star with a dry erase marker in front of the happy helper’s name.

@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun Жыл бұрын
Maybe practice before it’s lunch time. Give them a visual cue and teach it to them in the cafeteria while no one is there. Tell them it’s going to be loud but them doing what they need to do ( be very specific about what you want from them) is going to make sure they get to eat sooner or whatever it is they are getting ready to do. Maybe even practice with out talking. Just use the hand signals.

It’s really hard to be a teacher. Kids want to play. My best advice is to find ways to make following the directions fun. There’s a lot of reasons kids don’t listen and behave how we’d like. Sometimes we won’t them to do tasks that aren’t age appropriate. Sometimes it’s too hard or too easy and they get frustrated or bored. Sometimes the lesson is going too slow and they lose interest. Sometimes it’s too fast and they give up. All of these, and more happen. Engaging students with specific routines and procedures that are easy and fun to follow is what I try to teach on this channel. Start with one task or procedure you want them to do. Add movement, music and chants to make it engaging. One great resource is Whole Brain Teaching. I think that might help you get started as well. 🙂

@@imaniabdulaalim193 great question. The Velcro “dot” with their number on it is easy to move. I actually move the entire line. The person in front, the old ”line leader” goes to the back. I just remove their dot and then proceed to move everyone else’s dot up one spot. I timed myself once and it was under one minute to move everyone up one spot and the old line leader to the back. Hopefully I answered that for you. 🙂

Kindergartens in my country have 25 students in each class. It is simply impossible for me to manage my 45 minute esl lessons with them. Their basic teacher is in charge of setting rules like this so I can't intervene or make my routines in only 45' a week. Plus I go in 7 classes each week and every teacher has different routines or degree of chaos. How could you help me and others in similar situations with such young learners which we see so rarely

That’s really difficult when you don’t have any input with setting rules. I know you will graciously approach the basic teacher with some of your ideas to see if they are willing to try some of your ideas. Together you can come up with a good solution. I do know that while it is difficult to set a routine when you only have them for 45 minutes is tricky but it can be done. Entering and exiting is part of the routine. Getting there attention is a routine. Quieting their bodies is a routine. How to get out and put away materials is a routine. When you are teaching you are the main teacher. You are the boss. I taught 14 classes of Philosophy to k-5 graders. I went in each class for 30-50 minutes each week with a lesson. It was really hard but I really learned how to get comfortable with being confident in myself and what I expected from my students. Some classes I loved others were wild. When I walked in they knew what I expected. How? I spent a lot of time initially setting those routines and expectations. They liked it when I came in because I was a little silly and animated but I could get them focused and quiet in 5 seconds. Let me know a specific issue you are having and we’ll tackle it. You can totally do this. Is it hard? Yep! But I don’t think they would have given you the job if they didn’t think you were not able to handle it. You are going to learn so much.

Yes. I have other videos to help with specific classroom management issues. Basically it comes down to: 1. What do you want them to do. Break it down into specific, small, teachable steps. 2. Model, Practice, Praise/reward Repeat 3. Make it fun by using chants, songs and music. 4. Remember what age you are teaching. 5 year olds won’t/can’t do what 7 year olds do. Keep everything age appropriate. 5. Go slow, be patient, love them, get to know them, build on their strengths. Hope that helps.

But what if they don’t recognize numbers?
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun

They are given a number the first day. It is on their desk name tag and coat hook and mailbox etc. So teach them what their number is. Show them their number on the floor. They will learn it quickly.

Are the numbers on the ground? I’m sorry I’m still unclear how the number system works. So number 1 is always number 1 all year? But the position changes? Do they see the number and “match” themselves? What about if they are outside? Field trip? Sorry I’m really eager to fix my lining up!
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun Жыл бұрын
Yes the numbers are written on the velcro dot on the floor. Each kid is assigned a number at the beginning of the year. It's on literally everything. So when they line up the go and stand on their velcro dot with their number on it. So if John is number 3 he goes and stands on number 3. Where it may get confusing to you is that I move the dots each week. I rotate the first dot in line to the back and move all the other dots up one spot. I do this so kids get to be a line leader. Sometimes I will switch the kids' in line because they get naughty. So if John was between 2 and 4 but his buddy Harry is number 4 and they cause all sorts of trouble in line I might switch him with number 16 Jennifer. Then the line sequence would be 2, 16, 4. They adapt really well. As far as outside goes usually I do two lines so they are all closer to me and I know I have their attention. A girl line and boy line or a even number line and an odd number line. They are not in order. Then when we move from one location to the next I will say "Odd line first and even in the back. We are doing a secret walker. Eyes forward... here we go." I do practice all of this BEFORE we have to do it in real life so they know the expectation and I can don't feel rushed or any other pressure. It seems weird to practice this but I'm 100% certain that it will be a life saver at crunch time.

Can you give me an idea of a song for lining up?
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun

You can do a chat or a song. Maybe the song could be the William Tell Overture or a popular song that is kid friendly and old one could be “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

I’m confused. So you play music then call out different ways to line up? Or is that an alternative?
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun
@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun Жыл бұрын
Great question. And the answer is. “It depends”. - don’t you hate that answer 😖 sorry. But sometimes and with some groups it works with just putting on a specific song and they know “Oh it almost P.E. time and so that song means we need to line up and get going.” But sometimes it’s music followed by “It’s library so grab your books and show me you’re not ready.” I hope that clears it up. Let me know if you have more questions.

The struggle is real. When I had kids throwing things my first instinct is to remove them from the game. It's not a bad temporary solution. But eventually you have to deal with the behavior. Are they a difficult student? Do they do other naughty things? Do you think they are trying to get attention? Do you think the task is too hard so they are frustrated and don't want to show that they are struggling? Maybe too easy but actually kids don't usually throw stuff when they are "bored" in my experience anyway. My guess is they have other issues you deal with with them. They might be a kid that gets one chance at a game and then if something flies into the air they have an alternative assignment that is not "fun". All of this you have set up before hand and talked with them extensively about. They do X you do Y. And then you do it. No emotion. It was the deal. Then let them know the next day they will get another chance. "Hey, we all make mistakes but we don't keep making them. It will be a big bummer for you to keep throwing stuff and I like you so much that I really want you to learn using a game that's fun instead of a worksheet that is really no fun at all and that you have to do all by yourself. I sure hope you pick the fun way tomorrow. But if not that's okay I've got a lot of worksheets and a lot of patience and I know you will make a good decision because I know how much you like to have fun." Something along those lines. If they are wanting attention try set a hard boundary, like above conversation, with little as possible attention given with them individually and provide a lot of praise when they are doing it right. If they just can't regulate then maybe a game with pieces is not for them. or they play for 5 minutes and then move on to something else. And the next day challenge them with 6 minutes. (give them the timer- You have better things to do than to sit and watch them for 6 minutes. Put them on an honor system if possible.)

Start by practicing. Tell them exactly what you want to see. Then practice and reward. Practice and reward. Then practice and reward some more. Then try it for real and reward some more. Just make sure you are being super explicit about what you want to see and expect.
