In this video, Instructor Steve is going to do some training with an adorable little Labrador Retriever named, Maggie! Teaching your dog to listen to you can be broken down into a series of steps. Ultimately, your dog will learn to give you some attention any time their leash tightens. We call this behavior “Leash Respect”. And we do this with all of our dog training students. This adds a little redundancy to your leash walking so that not only does your dog understand where you want them to walk, but with this extra step, your dog starts to understand that they shouldn't put any tension on their leash.

Thank you so much! My 4 month old maintains "heel" position well for reasonable periods given his age, even with distractions but otherwise pulls to chase every bee and blowing leaf. Practicing this "with me" exercise for a week helped so much to build understanding that pulling is never okay.

Walking my 9 month old pit rescue is a challenge. He is so energetic and curious. I try to balance allowing him to smell and explore (be a dog) and listen to me. He is slowly getting better. I don't care if he's on my left, right, or out in front sniffing, as long as he does not pull. People and other dogs show up and everything is out the window.

Man! Where do you live? In which country? Because apparently you do things very different there and I would love your opinion on how. I am on some Facebook groups in my country (sadly, Romania) and I just saw somebody gave away a 1.5 yrs old pittie to some strangers for adoption and the imbeciles decided on the way home to actually abandon it to the dog pound where he was actually on parole to be killed. I mean what kinda fucked up people would do that and how do you over there do things different!? I wanted to take him in, but my 1yrs staffie girl not much friendly and also I live in a one bedroom apt, so you get the idea of space. I am asking you because I have no words left to tell these imbeciles that a dog is for life, so is a family member.

Mark Edwards Try moving some of your training sessions into your back yard if you have one or another quiet but familiar outdoor space. Once he is better at listening out there gradually move to louder or less familiar places. Within a few months your dog should be listening better outdoors/ with distractions.

This video is very helpful! However, I must confess I feel a little envious when I watch people training Labrador puppies! They’re so highly food-motivated and willing to please-and does she look like she wants to chew on the leash or the trainer? Nope. I want to see you guys doing this with a cattle dog! My 16-week-old ACD mix lies down on the leash, tangles one foot it in on purpose, tries to chew it, and flails her razor-sharp teeth around trying to make this leash nonsense go away so she can run around like a maniac. I’ve taken to wearing my leather gardening gloves during leash training because I’m tired of getting scratched up. Yet she’s really good off-leash and is so smart that she has learned many commands in a single session. What she doesn’t understand yet is that the leash is key for her freedom and safety-and that Mommy is not a chew toy. 🤣

I hand feed them together during meal times and they will wait until I say they can finish their meal. No one tried to steal food! I wish I could send you a clip of me doing it! Truly amazing. I totally understand the need to build a solid foundation for the puppy to learn with no distractions, inside, but can we please have a video for when and how to transition to outside for walks? My puppy is really good at this inside and in front and back gardens, but as soon as we leave the garden, he just wants to pull all the way to the field where we play fetch. He’s obsessed haha. As soon as he knows we’re going towards the field he practically drags me there. I’ve tried the turning him around method, so he knows pulling doesn’t get him anywhere, but if I stop him he just digs his heels in and doesn’t move, unless it’s towards the field. I always try to exercise him beforehand, but it’s tricky to do that before we get to the field. Any tips anyone?

I live in a place where off leash is almost a religion. I have been yelled at for having my dogs on a leash (I’m making them aggressive). They are rescues ,fearful and are comforted by being able to transfer the responsibility to me. We walk a lot, leash pulling and unwanted behavior can be altered when you just stand still, for as long as it takes for them to figure out why we are not going anywhere and their mindset is changed. Food would work but we are past that. Patience is necessary and sometimes I have had to stand for 15 min at the beginning. A lot of people are jealous of how well they walk with me, especially by those that get taken for a walk by their dogs.

I enjoy your training videos and, largely, agree with your methods. HOWEVER, I am very concerned with the complete dependence on food treats as the primary motivator. I have a young dog (Cockapoo, 10 months), who is a very fussy eater. She has been checked for medical conditions. While she responds well to training treats, she then balks at eating her regular meals - sometimes even refusing to eat her regular food at all. Especially, when you emphasize "high value" treats for training, these are much more tasty than her regular kibble - even sometimes topped with cooked ground beef. It seems the treats are replacing her regular meal in her mind. I am forced to stop using training treats in an effort to keep her eating regularly. What to do?

We have a 4 month old lab puppy, and leash training is one of our major struggles. We are doing well with “Let’s go” in the house, but of course, outside all bets are off. My question is: how do we get her adequate exercise without undoing all the leash training we’ve done in the house? This video looks like it will help, but until she really gets it, we have the same problem.

I understand - my lab will walk nicely for a few paces in the hallway with treats along the way, but outside not a chance. The trouble is I have to take him outside to relieve himself and for exercise, and he pulls until we get to the grass and he gets a big reward once we get there - and no way are you going to enforce manners while they want a wee. Outside can then become a pulling battle and we go backwards. I guess the video shows you how to get started and you've got to build on it and slowly add distractions indoors and build the skill up while at the same time when you are outside being gentle and not having a leash battle. That part of the balance the video doesn't address.

During training, is it okay to feed my dog cheese daily? How much should be the quantity. In the video, it seems you fed her cheese greatly. Please tell me

How many treats do you end up using during a training session like this? I worry that I could give my puppy too much and end up forming bad habits like turning away her regular food. I can't train with regular kibble because she is a picky poodle and we've switched over to a combination to wet/dry food (it'd get quite messy). I'd really like to try this and other trainings on this channel with my pup but I often find myself cutting training sessions a little short because I feel like I'm giving her too much. She doesn't respond quite as well to rewards by play/toy... any help/advice would be appreciated! Thank you

I use really tiny holistic sardine kibble - also i do not feed my Aussie before training he gets almost his entire meals from me which is about 3 cups a day. Sometimes i throw the kibble in the grass and he spends hours over the day searching for the food.

@@judymiller5154 mix of lab and I think Jack Russell terroir. I believe. I know one thing I’m learning once he gets out his energy. No more pulling me down the road with him. He’s got so much energy. He gets bored very easily I’m noticing. Not really sure what to do with him. I’m on disability and with him from 7am to evening. Every day. I took him once to a lake nearby I ended up staying 5 min and getting back in car. He was pulling me in about 8 diff directions at once. Like adhd on steroids. I have adhd so I understand him.

@@richwilson5969 oh my, if he has JRT in him, he is bred to WORK HARD all day! Any chance you can get a treadmill? Try feeding with a snuffle mat, puzzle box etc cuz they love to sniff and dig. Fetch and tug are also good ways to tire them out. With your disability, you may have to hire somebody to work on the leash walking, but try a gentle leader/halti first. All the best. God bless ❤️🙏❤️

Maybe you don’t have high value treats. Sometimes all you need is a treat switch and your puppy follows you everywhere. I recommend using treats that only have one or a few ingredients and that are really smelly. Dogs LOVE these. Especially mine. Sometimes dogs aren’t food motivated though. Maybe they really like tug of war with a rope toy or they like “killing” a plush toy. It depends on the dog but whatever they love, use that as currency. This comment may not even be relevant to you anymore because it was 8 months ago but I’m typing anyway because if I can help you, I want to. Hope this helps!

How many treats is normal to give to a puppy while training? While watching this video he probably gave a treat about 100 times! Is this normal? My puppy does great with treats but not usually her own food, even around feeding time.

When it came to training my puppy, I made it RAIN treats. It really encouraged her to nail down those commands in the early days of training! As many treats as it takes!

My question is... Won't the dog only come/do things for food? And if you don't have any, they'll stop listening? I find that with my own lab..it drives me nuts and I'm worried I'm only feeding his food obsession? 🤷😔

Use in moderation. Cheese is a high value treat where as kibble is a low level. Always use kibble where you can as it’s healthier but if they aren’t interested or it’s a more demanding training session up the treat value (so how tasty and smelly it is I.e. bacon fish cheese)

First time I've been disappointed in the content. A prong collar is a much better tool. Combine it with treats and ur done training in 10 minutes. It also has the ability to be used outside when other dogs or other stimulus are around.
