This is how I help people learn and gain confidence on basic roundabouts in the UK. It's worth noting that I don't take people on roundabouts until they have started to get a good grasp of basic T junctions, traffic lights and mini roundabouts.

All these comments about the instructor talking too much... seriously? It's Jake's first time navigating a roundabout. Any good instructor would start with guided teaching unless the pupil requests otherwise. Once the pupil fully understands what to do, then they switch to prompted teaching - allowing the pupil to give it a go now they have the knowledge and can prompt should they miss/forget something. Richard demonstrates this perfectly, starting with a guided first attempt and moving more towards prompting (example - when Jake forget about the signal) as he progressed. - Great video as always Richard, keep up the good work :)

I've been teaching my daughter to drive in between her lessons - and this video has been invaluable to re-assure me that I am teaching her correctly. We've done the parrot method and also now we are working on her doing most of it on her own, but with me guiding her on what to watch for so she can make a good decision to go. I don't have dual controls and we have a rule, if I say "stop, stop, stop" she must stop immediately. I've had a couple of those, and she's done great, so its given me the confidence to push her a little further each time. Generally we pick a route and do it over and over, correcting small mistakes each go round. I've actually just emailed her a link to your roundabouts video and told her to watch it before her lesson tomorrow :) so a big thumbs up from me!

Your methods are really good! Explaining the lesson before applying it, on the spot rather than in a moving car, is the best way to remove the student's anxiety; Showing where to look is also good, because if the student is not very good with the pedals, there are mistakes and confusion with decisions. Thanks again for these videos, absolutely gold, you helped me so much, I'm on the 24th hour of my driving course and maybe half of the things I learned are from here (even if I'm not from the UK the principles are the same) , Thank you!

I find driving teachers usually talk so much, I strugle to find room in my head to proceess my thoughts, situation on the road and what I should be doing at any given moment. Also I find that driving teachers think too much for learner drivers which results in bad driving once they have passed since sudrey theres noone to make decisions for them. I wish there was more room to allow learner to think independently.

@@SiostraEmo you do it gradually, it’s what I do with my instructor. After about ten hours he just lets me drive now and just tells me where to go. He occasionally asks questions like which lane I should be in approaching a roundabout to make sure I’ll use the right one etc. Or once I do something wrong he tells me. But before he’d have to jump in and help.

I've been with 3 different instructors in which one was literally talking non-stop and as a beginner, I really couldn't focus much. I was HYPER focused on the road and when talking back, I would only mumble to him. I actually told him to stop talkin so much since it only goes through one ear and the other without any absorption. Now, I've ended up staying with him since he had a petrol car and I wanted to use the hardest car to learn in. The other ones kinda let me do my own thing and then told me to pull on the left to give me advice, or just remind me of things like checking mirrors or blind spot while driving. Ended up passing first time but my thing is. I know how the car works, I just needed muscle memory, that's it. You WILL look at controls and stuff because you don't have muscle memory, just like I don't need to watch my keyboard at all when typing. Now, if someone keeps stopping you, or talking too much without letting you drive, then you should really change that instructor. Practice makes perfect.

7:21 one or two minutes of holding the traffic up as a student learning to drive is not bad at all. As a new learner myself I don't care so much about holding the traffic up what I care about is making errors that can cause me to bounce or cause others to bounce. And I don't care so much about oncoming vehicles hitting me if I'm driving good because the chances that a vehicle will bounce the vehicle while I'm driving good is slim. This is my logical way of thinking why I shouldn't be worried about accidents on the main road as a new learner. 😎💯💪🏿👍🏿

Can i ask how you prefer to teach your students on speed adjustment and gear change when coming up to a hazard/junction? Do you have them overlap their gear and braking or do you think it's better to keep the stages separate (i.e get down to 15mph first, then come off the brakes and disengage the clutch to downshift to gear 2)? I feel like the former method is a lot to do at once but I guess its something that comes with time.

Which lane do you take when your exit is the second exit and it’s just barely after the 12 o’clock position. I have 2 people telling me different, my feel is left lane and signal after 1st exit but I’m also being told signal right, right lane then signal left and move to left lane and turn off? The exit is only just after 12 but it being second exit throws me… there’s no road markings or signs so I’m terrified of cutting someone up or being cut up? :(
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
Try to go by the sign, if the sign says 12 o'clock then treat it like ahead (left lane) if the sign is passed 12 o'clock then usually it will be the right lane.

Hi Richard. Question if possible. You say left or ahead or right depending on where you are leaving the roundabout. But what would you say if it was not a definite left and it is not straight ahead so looks left but it also looks straight? So In between the two? Really struggling understanding this one🙄 Thank you

If it's in between the first exit and up to and including 12 o'clock, I will say ahead.

Finding the videos great for learning basics. My driving instructor is telling to check my blind spot when exiting on round abouts is this necessary?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Жыл бұрын
It depends on the angle you're at, if you think someone could be hiding in your blind spot then yes, but this is only usually possible on very large roundabouts.

So for the 1st and 2nd exist stay on the left lane. For the 3rd exit stay on the right lane. Is that correct? My driving instructors did not teach something like this. And too bad most drivers in India don't follow that. So I have to worry about all the others on the roundabout :D

Confused here, what is the proper way to count exits on roundabouts? My instructor counts as second, the first after the exit where I come from and it always confuses me as I think it should be first, as my exit doesn't really matter as I am in it. In the video you counted as I would say properly, with 1, 2, 3 after the exit where you come from.

The first exit you reach is what I call the first exit. The road you come from is an entrance from your perspective.

Supposing I m going right (3rd exit), what if I cant change lane in the roundabout in time (from right to left) to exit it, should I wait in the middle for others to pass or go round again to make the left turn? If I wait in the middle of the road, will it be a fail in the test?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
Waiting on the roundabout in flowing traffic will likely be dangerous. It's better to go round the roundabout again and just before you need to change lane make your position clear that you intend to change lane. Keep your speed up with the flow of traffic to discourage others from trying to overtake you.

Roundabouts are my bane at the moment lol. I did a high level roundabout smoothly my instructor said and struggled with the smaller ones due to the steering required. I think I have a slight problem correcting the wheel too when there's a lot of steering involved as I either go on the kerbs or accidentally cut out the car from doing something wrong.
