TEACHING BUDDHISM: Ugandan buddhist monk seeks to spread his religion

Venerable Bhante Bhikku Buddharakkhita is the first ever Ugandan Buddhist monk and he is one of only a handful on the entire African continent. In fact he is the only African born monk from his particular school of Buddhism known as Therevada Buddhism. NTV’s Suhail Mugabi recently caught up with the man formerly known as Steven Kabogoza, who narrated his journey to Buddhism and how he intends to spread the religion in Uganda.

@@fernando2964 Mahayana developed a few hundred years after the Buddha and the early Buddhist schools were established. Most of the development was after it migrated out of India to east Asia. Theravada is the oldest "surviving" teaching.

@@dudeonthasopha Hi there is no particular name like Theravada or Mahayana in the Buddha days even the word "Buddhism" is an English word expressing as a movement or some sort. Dhamma (Pali) is a word Buddhists use . It refers to the the teachings of the Buddha. Dhamma supports the practice of those who are in harmony with it. On this level, dhamma refers to ethical conduct and righteousness.

@@Sketcher86 no the schools of early buddhism was not present during the Buddha's life, i wasn't claiming so. But of the two major branches today. Theravada was from the Sthaviriya school, the first major sangha split. Mahayana came hundreds of years after that though and was a removed from early Buddhism. The dhamma remains the same. These are mostly abhidhamma and sectarian issues.

The Pali Phrase means "There are no books that could be the proof of the ultimate Truth and There is no Race of Human Beings". It was also the Buddha who first time in Human History opposed Human Slavery. Buddha suggested monks and nuns not to accept slaves as gift. He suggested the laities not to involve in Human trafficking for slavery or prostitution FOR Right Livelihood, one of the Eightfold paths.
