Teaching Children to Count in 2s

What's involved in learning the '2 Times Table' and is it the same as 'counting in 2s'?
This is for many of us, one of the earliest Maths skills we'll remember being taught in schools. We learned to say '2, 4, 6' etc.
When we say these numbers on this order, we're exploring a special pattern in the number system. We could call this 'Counting for ordinality'.
However, saying the number names in this pattern is VERY different to understanding that we are multiplying 2.
To make sense of this, we need to see each 2 as a single quantity and how when another 2 is added, a new amount each time. This then connects to the pattern of number names we use to label these groups. This is not counting, but subitising.
