This makes me cry. Imagine having a mom who finds it embarrassing for their own daughter that learned English first and never have I ever learned nor spoke Spanish so she told them Spanish was my first language . I’ve been in ELD from 2-9th grade. I felt stupid and I find it embarrassing having to tell my friends what I have next (class). I hold back tears when I have to take tests

I love how enthusiastic you are about being a teacher! It really inspires me to want to be one. I love how you explain that everything is all a working progress whem you become a teacher and that you're not going to be perfect on the first try, you just have to learn amd keep going. It makes me so excited that someone like you is taking the time to explain the process and opinions of a teachers life!!

***** Isn't that such an important thing to remember? There's a lot of pressure to be perfect right out of the gate, but there is so much that just comes from experience. Thanks for your encouragement!

Im curious if your school offers a program that encourages both English and native language academic language for future success in a wide range of high need bilingual opportunities that would require academic dual language abilities and benefit their future both academically and financially? For a long time my schools did not and when they introduced it it improved social emotional development and a lot of other things. It was amazing. Students felt more connected to their parents and families from back home too because they never fell behind in their native language. Personally I fell behind in my native language because English became the center of attention at school and I was at school more time then at home or my family was always working.

Bilingual Bookworm I work at a different school now and don’t teach ELD anymore, but most of our students take Mandarin classes in the afternoons which is really cool!

I love how as a great ELD teacher you have the opportunity to make content deeply culturally relevant by including pieces of their culture’s history or historical figures from their cultures. I just wish there were more (dual language) programs so that students don’t feel pressured to assimilate to only developing content language fluency in English. :/ They are so highly needed where I’m from also.

I teach ELD students all the time. Do you ever find yourself tearing up when listening to their stories?
