Hello. I studied in Salzburg, Austria in summer 2015 and Berlin, Germany in summer of 2016. I loved it so much that I want to live somewhere in Europe. I will be graduating with my BGS in English/Music this summer. I want to teach adults. I also want to bring my 12 yr old and 14 yr old daughters with me for a year or two. I want to give them this opportunity to learn and live in a different country. I know it won't make me rich financially, but what a great opportunity.

Hi Isaac Smith, just a heads up that your account settings don't let me reply directly to your comment. You don't need to have a degree in education to teach English in Germany. A degree in SOMETHING and a TEFL certification is generally enough. As for the cost of living in Germany, it's certainly not the cheapest place in Europe! ...But it's not the most expensive, either. Here's a good resource for you as far as individual costs go: www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Germany Hope that helps and all the best to you with your move! :D

Hallo Dana! Vielen Dank für deinen Rat. I have been to Germany once and I totally loved it. I would love to live there for a couple of years to teach but to also learn as much German as possible. My desire is to be completely fluent. Until I can go, I am watching Easy German and that has been such a help (and that's how I found your channel, by the way.) I enjoy your videos about living in Germany...good for you for doing so! But I will admit: Ich bin ein wenig eifersüchtig. Alles gut!!

Hi Celeste! Thanks so much for your nice comment. I'm no stranger myself to feeling eifersüchtig, that's for sure, so I know just what you mean! And what I would say is use those feelings and that drive to get yourself over here!! :D It will definitely help and be a smoother transition for you since you are already learning German. I didn't know any German when I came here and it was really hard. There were some tearful nights at the beginning for sure lol This Sunday I will be putting out a video looking at how it was for me learning German and my tips for that, so hopefully that helps you as well! If you have any questions as you plan for your journey over here, just let me know. You can send me messages here or on my FB page too (facebook.com/WantedAdventure) Have a nice rest of the week :)

I didn't read all the comments, but as for the pay: I teach English in middle school and private schools usually pay less than public schools. No idea if it's any different at kindergarten level. This has something to do with the way private schools are financed. They get the teachers' wages from the state and with those and some rather moderate fees (in comparison to private school fees in the UK and in the US) they have to run the whole thing. So they can't just pass on all the money they're getting to their teachers.

I live in BC in Canada and I have done French Immersion since kindergarten. In grade twelve they always offered a trip to mainly france so you can apply the language in the real world, but after paying all the fees our district decided to cancel not allow us to go to france because of the recent attacks etc. Instead we did a trip which focused mainly on Bavaria and I fell in love. I am going to uni to get an arts degree majoring in history, and getting a french minor as well as taking some German classes and an education degree, which would basically guarantee me a job in BC. I would much rather end up teaching back in Germany, and am just curious how much German you already knew, how adjusting was, and I guess the whole process of ending up there?

Hi there, thanks very much for sharing your experiences in Germany. They are really helpful for those considering moving to Germany. I'm really interested in moving to Germany from New Zealand and teach English as a career. I finished my bachelor of theology in Auckland last June and will get a diploma in education in 2018 from Auckland uni. I was wondering if this would qualify me, if you know, to teach English here? Or I would need to get a TESOL degree from the uni which is another year of study? Thanks a lot a gain :)

Hallo Dana! I firstly would say it's a lot of fun to watch your videos! I love that you reach much of daily life things and form a realistic perspective on being in the German World. Keep it up! Although I would also love to ask you a couple of questions. Becoming an English teacher would meet my two greatest wishes, having greater and handy opportunities to travel around Europe or even other parts of the world and teaching children or young people in the better case. But I'm not a native speaker of English, I'm from Hungary. On the other side I'm truly eager to become a teacher and would not mind to get a complete degree in English Education, because a TEFl certification is probably not enough in my case. So, do you know other english teachers who are non-native speakers yet got a job in teaching? Do you think that I can get good opportunities with a proper degree? You mentioned a bit about salary, but is that enough to comfortably thrive in life on a long term? I'm interested in these questions because I would love to build up a proper life and leave my country once again for good and steadily thrive on abroad. And I'm also afraid that employers seek native English-speaker teachers for better jobs and since that I couldn't make it forward. Sorry for making this post so long and I hope to hear some answers from you! :)

@WantedAdventure 9 жыл бұрын
Gábor Bagoly Hello there! Thanks so much for your kind words about my videos!! :) I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying them. As for your questions, let me try to answer them the best that I can:First of all, you are right. Teaching is a great way to fund traveling around the world and teaching children and young people is often an amazing experience. And you are also right that people/schools often automatically have a preference for native-English speakers, even though it is sometimes the case that people who are not native speakers have a better understanding of the grammar and rules of the language than native speakers! But this does NOT mean that all is lost for you in your desire to teach English :) It just means that it might not be AS easy for you to get jobs as for a native speaker. When I did my TEFL certification in Prague there was one guy in the class who wasn't a native speaker and that's basically when they told him. By the end of the class, though, I'm pretty sure he did have a job, he just had to go to a few more interviews than the other people. I have another friend here in Munich who taught English for several years (she doesn't anymore) both in Japan and in Germany. She has never mentioned having trouble getting jobs, but she did mention that sometimes she has to kind of "prove herself" to people...like they don't automatically believe she is qualified to teach the language. But at the same time, I must say that when I taught English I was only about 23, and I also had to "convince" people of my abilities because I was so young! Also a last point I'll make about this: I really feel that teaching a language also has A LOT to do with one's actual ability to teach and ability to "understand" languages. So just because someone is a native speaker, doesn't mean they will be a good teacher of that language! And I think schools/people often forget that, and perhaps that's something you could remind them of in the interview. So I think that you definitely have a chance to do it! As for salary: that really depends on the place. Here in Munich, for example, I found it was hard to thrive long-term as an English teacher because there are SO MANY people here teaching English, which makes it's hard to get very many classes, and thus hard to make enough money. Plus things are pretty expensive here. However, in other places it's possible. In Prague, for example, I knew lots of people who were making quite enough to live, and I've heard people talk positively about teaching opportunities in the Middle East and Asia. I hope all this helps you!! Thanks again for watching my videos, and I hope you continue enjoying them :D All the best to you, Dana

My English teacher in High School was not a native Engisch speaker. He taught us English according to the curriculum and that was British English. I noticed that there are big differences in many words between BE and AE. My old textbook always referred to England and typical situations in England and there was also a map of Great Britain. However, that was 20 years ago. From my experience, I understand English people better than US Americans

It really depends on where you live, and who you are teaching. If you are teaching business people there are, as far as I know, no restrictions regarding qualification other than those the institute requires. If you are teaching children then it's whole new kettle of fish. There the rules of each state apply. And surprise, surprise Bavaria (the she is in) is the worst state when it comes to hurdles before being qualified to teach.

My understanding of this, is similar to what Dana said. Its incredibly hard work and takes a long long time to qualify to be a teacher in the german school system which middle school and high school fall under. However as she eluded, working in a language school, an international school, bi-lingual kindergarten, or indeed any private school /college doesnt require the same qualifications. For example my GF was given a teaching job for a technische private school, and within one year she was qualifed to do it. In the normal school system i think u need a degree, masters degree, then some years as a junior teacher, and also some months on a placement in a native english speaking country.... all in all i think it takes 6 years!!!!!

Tansel KARADOĞAN Hi Tansel! I'll actually be doing a Q & A video about teaching English soon, and will definitely answer this question as I get it a lot, but just real quickly here's my thought on it: It is true that people/schools do often have an automatic preference for native-English speakers, even though it is sometimes the case that people who are not native speakers have a better understanding of the grammar and rules of the language than native speakers. But this does NOT mean that all is lost for you in your desire to teach English :) It just means that it might not be AS easy for you to get jobs as for a native speaker. When I did my TEFL certification in Prague there was one guy in the class who wasn't a native speaker and that's basically what the course instructors told him. By the end of the class, though, I'm pretty sure he did have a job...he just had to go to a few more interviews than the other people. I have another non-native English-speaking friend here in Munich who taught English for several years (she doesn't anymore) both in Japan and in Germany. In addition, I really feel that teaching a language also has A LOT to do with one's actual ability to teach and ability to "understand" languages. So just because someone is a native speaker, that doesn't mean they will be a good teacher of that language! And I think that schools/people often forget that, and perhaps that's something you could remind them of in the interview. As for being speaking German, when I started teaching in Germany, I had a very limited level of German. Some schools did ask me a few questions in German because they wanted someone who could at least communicate in the language, while others didn't care and they told me it wasn't allowed to speak German in the classes anyway! I, myself, found that as my German got better it became easier for me to teach English to German speakers because I could understand why and even anticipate where they would make mistakes, but you definitely don't have to be fluent. I hope this helps you and I wish you all the best with your teaching!

Hi. I just came across your video as I was researching option in to teaching English in Germany. I have a TESOL and have 2 years experience teaching ESL in Korea. My questions is, did you have to be in Germany when applying or did you apply from another country? I'm thinking of going to Germany once my contract in Korea is finished and would ideally like to have another job lined up afterwards. Thought, it's not really possible to physically be in Germany for the hiring process. Also, don't really have any Germany language skills atm. Your advice, general comments?

+Sophyra1441 Hey, as far as I know it's not too uncommon to apply for jobs like that without being in the country. Though it's a lot easier to go do it while being there. I've met people working here, who didn't speak any German (or barely any), so that's not a big problem. I just think it's more tedious to apply while being abroad. Though you can try applying for universities, too (they weren't mentioned in the video but universities offer language courses for their students as well and they are often done by native speakers without a "higher degree" than TESOL). If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Additionally, there is always a chance of private tutoring (though tbh that's not as big as in other countries). Your timing is a bit off, the current semester started already in most of the country, next semester will start march/april-something. @@panda1384 actually, my husband has got a vacancy as a software engineer and I have to move with him. I’m continuing my Ph.D in Cairo university, Egypt but I would like to join a university of Stuttgart institute of linguistics as my husband and I are going to move to Stuttgart. But it seems working as an English teacher is very difficult for non-native speakers even if I have a lot of qualified certificates.

Hi, I'm considering going to Germany next year for teaching. I have a lot of questions. Do I need to have a degree in education or any of that? Or can I just have one of the certifications for teach English as a second language? Also, what is living like in Germany as far as expenses go? Thanks, just looking to get some answers on where my future might be taking me.

+wanted adventure I have an interview with Berlitz on Monday! Do you have any tips for me?
@WantedAdventure
@WantedAdventure 9 жыл бұрын
***** Hey Charlie! First of all congratulations on the interview :) Okay tips...I suggest you put together a little ring binder or other folder with your documents (for example: resume, diploma, certificates, reference letters, etc.). Also, it would be great to have a quick 10 minute explanation of some English subject ready, just in case they want to hear you "teach something." Lastly, in one teaching interview I went to, they asked a few questions in German, just to see if I could manage at all in the language. But the other schools I interviewed with didn't care at all whether or not I could speak German.... So just be prepared for the possibility that they might want to hear a little German from you. Other than that, smile :) and try to be relaxed. Wish you all the best!

Hey ! thanks :D I am really looking forward to it! I will need to get a ringbinder etc, I was reading online and they said that BErlitz is mainly freelance work? Do you have any idea what the average monthly income would be? Worried about budgeting etc! thanks :D

***** You're definitely right, most of the schools here in Munich offer work on a freelance basis rather than a fixed contract, which means that you can also sign up at different schools and that helps you get more teaching work. Other schools include Inlingua and PET Sprachen, for example. How much you make depends on how many teaching jobs you can get/want to take. It also depends on what times and where you are willing to work. For example, are you willing to teach at 8 in the morning out in Unterschleißheim? Are you willing to teach on Saturday? The more flexible and open you are to work, the more jobs you'll get offered and the more you can make! :) If you haven't seen it yet, here's the other video I made specifically about my experience teaching English in Munich and that might answer some more of your questions! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmWnnIaGrKadftE

Hi there! I have about a million questions, but I will try to limit myself as to not be a bother! I'm currently working on enrolling in a TOFL online course (with accreditation and practicum time), but I'm trying to make plans for when and how I imagine actually executing this. My primary concern is money. I don't exactly have alot of it and I don't have much of a fallback here, but my question is this: How much would you recommend setting out with? I am going to need to be able to lock down a place to live and survive until my first paycheck and it sounds like having some savings to fall back on given the freelance nature of most of the work would be a good idea. I need to support myself off of this and there isn't much room for hiccups. Is this actually a viable option for me?

Ryan Henry Hey Ryan! Well, it all depends on where you want to teach and live. In Prague, for example, things were pretty cheap, but here in Munich cost of living is more expensive. But the good thing is, you can generally start teaching pretty quickly and then you've got an income to pay for things and hopefully not have to dip into your savings much. How much you feel comfortable having to fall back on is a question of personal taste... Consider that you'll need enough for a few months' rent, food, drink, entertainment, transportation, visa costs, etc. But as I mentioned, all depends on where you're going. Here's a great cost of living chart for Germany www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Germany Hope that helps! Wish you all the best for your move :)

+Ryan Henry one more thing: As you can see the Cost of living are much lower in Eastgermany, but DO be careful about going there for teaching adults, teaching Kids is fine, but these adults can be a bit.... peculiar. A lot of them either did not learn english in their secondary school (russian as a second language!) or only had very few classes (English as a third language). I'm not saying don't go there at all, but be aware classes won't be just a quick brushing up of existing skills. PS: Today Eastgermany is a collocial term refering the what's officially call*ed* new federal states of Germany.

Teaching English to a bunch of little German cuties.....sounds great and unlike other pursuits to experience living there; accessible to me. But now that I'm thinking more.....I don't know practically that could work. I would need to know German as well working along with someone who spoke English, making me unnecessary. But if it was possible it would be such a rich experience.

Hi! Great video! I'm brazilian, so my native language is portuguese, but I've been teaching English for the past 8 years here in Brazil (also language school coordination experience and biology teaching degree). I fear the schools in Germany will not give me a chance because I'm not an English native speaker. Do you have any thoughts on that? Do you think they would still consider me? Thank you!! :)

Fabricia Kohler Carvalho Hello! I've actually gotten this question several times now, so you are not the only one wondering about this :) And the advice I'd give is this: It is true that people/schools do often have an automatic preference for native-English speakers, even though it is sometimes the case that people who are not native speakers have a better understanding of the grammar and rules of the language than native speakers. I hope this helps you and I wish you all the best with your teaching!

Hi, how are you? I'm an American who just graduated from college with a Bachelors degree in Finance. Currently, I am studying abroad in Barcelona. And I have fallen in love with it. Though not Munich, I was wondering about the possibilities of teaching English here. My question is : do you knew any websites or programs that I can get certification when I get back to the States? The reason that I ask is that you linked and stated that you were certified in Prague. . . Any info helps, thanks!!

RSandiego I wish I could help, but I really don't know of any resources in the States. I did everything over here in Prague and Munich. I did a quick Google search and found there are also online TEFL certification programs, but I don't have any experience with any of them so can't really recommend program one from another. Good luck and please check back in and let me know what you do and how it goes so that I can keep that in mind for when others are wondering the same thing! Good luck to you :)

Good Luck getting an employee conract. The language schools operate as slave drivers. They will expect you to work when they call, classes can can cancel classes 24 hours ahead of time and you will not get paid. If you say no enough then they will stop calling you. Be ready for little to no classes in Summer and Christmas time. Also be ready to be thrown to the curb quickly, you are disposable and for the most part you will be treated as a novelty and traded by the language school like a commodity. These schools are great at churning through teachers, when they get burned out they just return home and more native speaker fresh blood arrives. TOFL will help you get a job if you are new to teaching, if you have experince as a teacher or professional it might not matter much and they will jump directly to that point on your CV. If you are young or just need to suplement your partners income then teaching is great. You will meet new people and other ex pats that are teachers. Getting your own classes is possible, however just do a search in google for "sprachschule" and any city. Theses things grow like mushruooms in every corner of every city, you are not alone on the market.

Do you have to be fluent in German to get a teaching job?
@WantedAdventure
@WantedAdventure 9 жыл бұрын
Nope! When I started teaching here, I had a very limited level of German. Some schools did ask me a few questions in German because they wanted someone who could at least communicate in the language, while others didn't care and they told me it wasn't allowed to speak German in the classes anyway! I, myself, found that as my German got better it became easier for me to teach English to German speakers because I could understand why and even anticipate where they would make mistakes, but you definitely don't have to be fluent.

did any of your university education help at all in the hiring, what other qualifications are needed, how much is the TFEL course. Even if the information is slightly outdated it will still give a general idea.

scott skoo Well you're in luck. I'm Caucasian South African but a good friend of African decent was recently teaching English in China. She has dreads and is a bit of a rasta. I asked her about racism and she said she didn't experience any. However, some people on blogs report racist experiences. So, appears experiences differ by place. People often stared at my height, beard and longish hair. For me, getting outside of my comfort zone is part of the reason I travel. If you have a degree then I could put you in contact with my former employer.
