From wake-up to bedtime, here's a day in the life teaching English in Thailand. The day starts like any other, coffee in bed while I check my emails, then it continues on. The most important thing to expect when living in Thailand is that things will not go as expected. There's always something--every time--which is different, unexpected, or nonsensical.
Today, it's the locked door which we're not allowed to lock. I don't know why, that's just the way it is.
That's really not what this video is about though. I drove my motorbike to the school I work at. In Thailand, motorbikes (scooters) are the most common means of transportation. In big cities, the traffic gets so clustered, you can't get anywhere if not on a motorbike. Even in a small town like Nakhonnayok, motorbikes are the way to go. I learned to ride mine when I moved into town.
At school, I teach 3 lessons a day, with the rest of the day devoted to office hours (lesson planning, grading, extra curriculars, and whatever activity the school has decided to start).
At the end of the workday, I fingerprint out and head home. Once home, I relax, do some more work, and sometimes go out to eat with some other teachers. Tonight, I went to a nearby cafe called Cha Pang (tea and bread in Thai) where I was pleased to find cheesy fries! MmmMm.
I started teaching English in Thailand in May 2017. I signed a 1-semester contract with Mediakids Academy. The experience has been different from what I expected in both positive and negative ways. I'll be sure to do a Q&A about that in the future. Mediakids Academy is an agency hired by the school to select English teachers to work at the school.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS about teaching English in Thailand, or just teaching English abroad, or working while traveling, please leave them in the comments section! I promise to answer as best as I can.

There are some basic rules that will help. I think the most important rule is to keep it simple. Think of the point you want to send home, whether it's a grammar point or some new vocabulary, and keep it simple. The basic structure of engage, study, and activate is easy to follow. There are some good KZbin videos which explain ESA lesson plans. You will probably be tasked with teaching groups of learners who are at different levels, but this shouldn't be a problem. You can keep children focused who are ahead of the pack by giving them extra duties such as reading the register, writing on the blackboard, or sitting them next to a lower level student to help them. I would recommend an easy backup activity with every lesson plan, just for when there are students who really struggle. Hope this helps a little.

Then after working for my second company from 2019, I got chased away after 3 years in 2022 and now got chased away by so many companies in 2023 to 2024 in various IT roles. Wish I could quit my IT career and study Accounting but have no money to study again. But I have bought Thai-English language books during my trips in Thailand in 2017, 2018, 2023 so might be a good idea to teach English in Thailand rather having a stressful unemployed poverty life in Fiji in IT.

With this company, yes. I made my own lesson plans for every single class, powerpoints and worksheets too. The "curriculum" was the director of the department saying "the first half of the book." Everything else was up to me. Going into it, just expect it to be more work than you thought. Note: this might be different by companies or countries. Thailand has a very laid-back unplanned dynamic.

Before Thailand rejected student-centered learning and Western pedagogy in general, you could go to teach a few classes a day, or even one class, and then you were free to leave and make money teaching business English classes or private students. Those were the days before thumb scans and gate duty. Today, Thai school administrators want the EFL teachers, 90% of whom are Filipinos, to teach EXACTLY like their Thai staff.

Companies in Thailand often react very strongly to defamatory remarks. Their freedom of speech laws are not as loose as in the US. The communication, expectations, practicality, and intentions of the agency were poorer than I hoped.

Hi Masoud, I'm very happy I decided to teach English in Thailand. It's an experience I would not give up. I wasn't sure what to expect when I went, and I think that helps me appreciate what I found there. I was in Nakhonnayok, a rural town, but you can find positions all over. Based on my own research, the process in China seems more streamlined and official with high expectations from teachers. Thailand, in my experience, was more laid back, a bit disorganized, and less advanced. I chose Thailand based on location (i love their weather) and my credentials. Many Chinese positions asked for prior ESL experience, which I didn't have. You'll find lots of info at daveseslcafe . com or with general Google searches. :D

Do you feel safe driving the scooter? How about walking? What about commuting at night? As a women, do you feel any gender inequality too? Also, did the company provide the housing for you? Were you in Thailand before moving there for the job?
@FearlessJacey
@FearlessJacey 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly! At first, the scooter was scary, but I embraced fearlessness I'd been preaching and it turned out to be amazing. I see a motorcycle in my future! Driving at night was no issue to me. There was some gender inequality, of course, but it wasn't abusive or detrimental to me. Actually there's a very lovely older Thai couple who lived nextdoor to us and they were the sweetest cutest couple you can imagine. The agency I worked for organized housing and paid for it from my monthly paycheck (3000 thai baht, about $100 usd). I applied for and interviewed for the job online in February before I was in Asia at all. I didn't see anyone from the company until orientation in May, but I did visit Thailand leisurely in March. Thanks for all the questions, let me know if I can help anymore.

@@FearlessJacey Thanks Jacey. Wow, $100 for the housing. Were you on a contract for a year? Did you need to pay for your work permit, how much did it cost? I've dreamed of working in East Asia for a year. Do you plan to stay long term or come back to U.S.? Are you homesick?

@FearlessJacey
@FearlessJacey 5 жыл бұрын
Not a problem! My salary was about average at 33,000 thai baht per month, about $1,100 USD. You can view listings at daveseslcafe.com to see what salaries are going at. I was in a public school in Thailand, where rates are generally lower. You can make up to $3000 USD a month teaching at a private school in China, South Korea, or Japan. However, my cost-of-living here in Thailand was only about $300-400 a month including housing, food, and travel.
