I could not agree more with what you said about knowing your content! I am a second year teacher. I was hired last year to teach US History (my specialty), but found out 4 days before the year started I was teaching Ancient World History!! I was a day ahead of the kids for most of the year, but I am a better teacher because of it!! Really enjoy the videos!
@HistoryWithTiffany6 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree! I feel like having to self-teach the content my first year really pushed me into being a better history teacher. How did you like ancient world? I did NOT want to teach it...and then like most things in life...I realized I had totally misjudged and I loved it.

In Iowa, we are required by law to be endorsed in all content areas before we can accept a teaching position (for example, I would need to be endorsed in World History in order to teach World History). Is this the case in your state?
@HistoryWithTiffany5 жыл бұрын
@@joshpeter3783 Hi, Josh! I am certified in South Carolina, Florida, and California so those are the only states I can speak to, but the certification for these states is in history, not a specific section of history. On the content exam I took to receive my initial teacher certification for history, the questions came from all sections of history, not just one. In the states I have taught in, if you are a certified history teacher, you are expected to be able to teach whichever section they need to place you in.

Audrey, I am so sorry for the delayed response. I took an extended KZbin break. You are absolutely not alone in that feeling. Teaching is a career that one should never stop learning in and I don't think anyone should ever feel like they know it all. It is constantly evolving and you will continue to evolve as you grow in the field. :)

Im 12 years old im in 7th grade. At first my friends and I really really really hated history.then a teacher who i really actually nice who was nice, cool, and really funny cane in. And it all changed. I started loving history because of the teacher. So I learned that I want some students like me who hated history, loving history and really enjoying it. now a days , all of the students enjoy class depending on the teacher. I really want to be a history teacher. Thx for giving me tips about it.!!❤❤

I loved that you discussed the reality of going into a classroom and teaching what you have not thoroughly studied. I had this happen during student teaching especially. Luckily, my clinical teacher was phenomenal. He helped me so much. And the reality is, too, that this happens quite a bit especially early on. I think it's important to connect this with the other reality that occassionally we all teach something that we ourselves our not too fond of. Both things are important to excel at and master

I cringe so hard watching this video now because I was so awkward, but I still stand by that idea of needing to put in the work to learn our content. It is almost double the work in those first couple years.A good mentor teacher can make all of the difference during student teaching!

Thanks for sharing these tips! I’m about a year out from starting my student teaching, my major is in Agricultural Education with a History teaching minor! I’m super excited, but nervous at the same time, but I do appreciate that there are sources that we can utilize as upcoming teachers to get us going in the right direction!

Hi! I am a future middle level teacher here in SC. I am a full time student but I also work full time. Without getting into details, I do it all my own. Which means that I don’t usually have any extra time to focus on the particulars of teaching. I don’t usually have the time to do things that other students do to gain insight. So thank you! These videos really are very helpful!
@HistoryWithTiffany5 жыл бұрын
I am so glad that they are helpful for you. I really miss making these KZbin videos. I know the struggle of working and school full-time, so if there is ever anything I can help with, just reach out! You can also find me on Instagram and message me there. Hang in there, that level of dedication is going to pay off in the future. You are already going above and beyond seeking out professional development on your own.

Schools in my area are considering removing the subject of history to some degree. I'm a huge fan of history and hate that people look at it as completely unnecessary. My niece is starting school and I want her to have an understanding on the subject, my sister asked if I could teach her history over the summer when she gets a little older. I have lots of books on multiple subjects mostly on western Europe from the middle ages to the first world war, but I don't know if I have the right material for a child. Do you have any advice on suitable material for an eight year old? Or where exactly I should start? Ancient history? Per or post Roman empire? American history? Where do I start with teaching someone about something I'm passionate about and want to share with so my niece can be interested too?

Hi! I just started going to school to become a history teacher, would you recommend the secondary education program or just majoring in history itself?
@HistoryWithTiffany2 жыл бұрын
Sorry this is such a delayed response, i took an extended youtube break. I think it depends on what you have available to you and your goals. I love the path I took, which was a degree in history followed by a year long certification program. It took some extra time but it allowed me to dive fully into being a historian and then focus on translating that into the K-12 classroom. Content and pedagogical knowledge are both so important and needed in K-12 teaching. Alternatively, you can always choose to pursue higher ed as well to meet any areas you feel you need more growth in. For example, if you complete a secondary education program now, you could get a master's in history later on, or if you choose a history degree now, you could focus your masters in education to meet those needs. For me, I did a history degree, then a year long cert program, then a masters that was 50% grad history courses and 50% curriculum and instruction courses. That master's program really helped me bring content and pedagogy together in all the best ways. Experiences will vary, and only you will know the areas you need to spend more time in ultimately. I hope that helps! :)

you'll need a teaching credential. the program usually takes about a year or so to complete. maybe 15 months.
@HistoryWithTiffany5 жыл бұрын
Camile is correct, and that varies by state. Some states such as California have very strict requirements, whereas other states have less strict requirements. You could go for an MAT that has a certification track attached, or, you could look for a certification program that takes just a couple semesters and is not a full master's degree. I would go on your state's department of education website and look at the certification page to find out exactly what they require. I hope this is helpful! :)
