I really appreciated how you showed the "formal" way of saying phrases as well as the version where you combine the icelandic words. As someone who has been trying to learn Icelandic on and off for years, it's always been hard reconciling how icelandic sounds with how it's spelled. As a suggestion for a possible video in the future, maybe you could pronounce some of the main streets and locations that are popular to visit in Reykjavik. That way we have a chance at telling the taxi drivers where to go properly :)

I've been keeping track on the weather both here in the UK (where it's currently 30C) and in Iceland, just to a) check up on how friends out there might be doing during another July heatwave and, b) be jealous of how much colder the summers are there. I can't stand the heat once it gets over about 20C, but completely get that in Iceland it should basically *never* be over 15C. I'm surprised you haven't all just melted yet. I've wanted to go back in July for the last couple of years. On the one hand, for Eistnaflug, and on the other hand because it's a two week break from the heat :P

Brilliant as always! Thank you ever so much! A video on phrases that strangers are likely to say to you would be so helpful - I can negotiate the "would you like a bag" stage, but stumble every time at the "is there anything else/would you like a receipt", responding with a rather sheepish "sorry" lol. What is a polite way to respond (say in a shop/restaurant) when you don't understand? "Ffyrirgefðu. Ég er frá Englandi, ég talar smá SMÁ íslensku"? Is there a polite way of asking if someone would mind conversing in English - something beyond "Talar þú Ensku?" or is that fine?
@MayhemmiGunn
@MayhemmiGunn 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Hrafna can give you a better answer, but anyways.. "Talar þú (talaru) ensku?" is good, but if you want to be more polite you could say 'Gætir þú talað ensku?' ('Could you speak in English'). And again, the 'Gætir þú' part is just pronounced as one word; 'gætiru'.

Thank you for the great and very rare opportunity to learn Icelandic by KZbin videos! For a future hint, when you teach how to pronounce Icelandic words, could you point out the reductions of the sounds in usual speech. For example you showed how a stand-alone "þu" can become a suffix "ðu" combined with the preceding word. However, when you pronounce the word, I can barely hear the "ð". What happened to it? Are there other sounds that undergo changes or elisions in normal speech?

Myndböndin þín eru frábær, Hrafna! Þúsund takk. Ég bý í Ástralíu en heimsotti norður Ísland árið 2004. Frábær upplifun! Núna bíð ég eftir að keyra nýju Arctic Coast Way. Það er ótrúlegt, en að læra latínu og forngrísku í skólanum reyndist mjög gagnlegt til að læra íslenska málfræði - og þyska líka.
