Teaching my Korean friends ENGLISH words that have ALTERNATE meanings in daily conversation

I think this is really helpful cuz I naturally learnt those expressions by living in English speaking countries but when I was living in Korea, I didn't know any of those expressions. Thx Dave and luv ur videos.

Dave, I was ready to give you lots of crap for "bias" but your explanation was actually really good at balancing the colloquial use in Korea vs the standard English meaning.

Indeed, I've actually never seen a person using "bias" that way other than K-pop fans. But whatever, learning that usage helps understanding what they mean anyway.

Those are a bit too specific to only the youngest generation (and they also change the slang they use constantly). The examples he used in this video are more ones that almost everyone uses in general. Common slang for everyone. Sugarcoat is a good one though.

데이브 구독한지 6년차로서 볼때 난 이 컨텐츠가 한국인 구독자 입장에서는 최고로 맘에 든다. 그리고 데이브만이 할 수 있는 컨텐츠여서 2백만 구독자 달성에 이만한 컨텐츠가 없다고 생각한다. 그래도 1백 8십만 구독자 채널인데 조회수도 잘 안나오고 최근 1-2년간 뭔가 의욕이나 열정이 없어 보여서 매너리즘에 빠진게 아닐까 싶었는데, 이 컨텐츠라면 각국 발음 비교 만큼 뜰 수 있을거 같다. 요즘 뭔가 밝아 보이고 열정 되찾은거 같아서 보기 좋네. ppl 이기도 하지만 데이브가 해주는게 훨씬 잼있을거 같다. 데이브한테 완전 딱 맞는 컨텐츠네. 이거 좀 자주하고 2백만 구독자도 찍고 1세대 외국인 유튜버로서 명성 좀 찾아보자.

I liked the video, but there are soo many more meanings to describe certain words that you explained.. my wife is Russian and it’s been over ten years and she is still learning the nuances of words and different meanings when spoken in different situations.

Wow i really love it. I think it's so great for learning languages to see and learn how natives speaks because is what people uses. textbooks sometimes are difficult and don't adjust to reality.

"Leave on read" got me feeling dumb, because my brain has seen it as "leave on read" as in "to read a book" instead of the past tense. Dammit English🤦‍♀️ I always turned mine off, and I use Samsung now so I stopped noticing years ago lmao. Hope your Korean book is still doing well, Dave 💯

"Health club" is actual english tho, so it isn't konglish tho people will definitely think you're a boomer now (maybe even an actual baby boomer). Even on wikipedia other terms like "fitness center" redirect to the "health club" page. Used to be a chain called "Chicago Health Club" (which got bought by Bally's/Bally Total Fitness i think).

한국사람들이 알고있는 표현중에서 배울때와는 다르게 실제로는 현지에서는 사용하지않는 표현이 많이 있다는것은 이미 들었는데, 오늘 영상을 통하여 정말로 많은것을 배우는것 같습니다. Hit the gym(헬스장에 가다), Hit me up(연락줘)는 정말로 내가 알고있던것과는 완전히 다른 표현이라서 전혀 몰랐던 사실을 알게되어서 많은것을 배우게 되는 시간이었던것 같습니다.

Re: health club is a legit word. Gym, fitness center, health club, etc. All common these days. Typically it depends on the name of the business and what amenities are offered. Health club and fitness centers are often more upscale and offer additional amenities (things) besides workout equipment such as snack bar, sauna, etc. (Although they don't have to have additional stuff -- some just call it health club because it brings a "better" picture that just a sweaty gym.). Gym is just short so people often just say that though.

Late to the game but two interesting notes, when you use click depending on context it can also mean the homophone clique, like that group was a bit too cliquey... Also Stan is another popular word in place of bias, though its grammatical different i.e. I am a X stan, My bias is X, also used in a negative manner... have fun explaining what 'Stan' means,

I'm pretty sure "bias" was a konglish word that only caught on in the US because of Kpop.

It's not too far removed from its regular meaning anyways though. "Who's your bias" is still using the normal meaning of what bias is supposed to mean. So it's barely even slang, I feel.

I don't personally think "bias" is Konglish because people in Korea will just say "favorite". Lots of Koreans don't even know what "bias" means, and thus don't use the word at all. I'm assuming some K-pop fans from non-native English countries(maybe, countries in Southeastern Asia) started to use the word that way.

I don't think so. Fire has been around for a while as a slang term. And, before that, we used "lit", which also has connotations of something burning.

I have a personal question to ask you Dave. So it has been more than 10 years that you have been living in Korea. To my knowledge, you haven’t visited the United States very much right? I could be wrong about this or mistaken. But don’t you ever get a feeling that you own Americana-ism is getting outdated? Positively, for sure Dave, you have the general idea of US culture on point! And seeing what trendy and popular on social media does help out a lot. However, your own perception of your home country may have changed a lot since the last you were there. Especially in youth culture! Young people in US are very progressive and innovative (speaking as a 22yr old). So maybe one of these days a visit back home would be eye opening and different from what you may last remember. Experiencing it first hand is better than understanding it through a screen. And it doesn’t even have to be Atlanta, any city or area would be just fine for a planned trip.
