So today I sat down with ALLBLANC TV and we compared Korean and English workout terms.. I've been really into gym culture lately, so I found this video especially interesting. Lately Dave's videos have been all about Dave forgetting English or American things. It's actually hilarious to me as a person who speaks multiple languages, too! It's nice to know I'm not the only one that fails to load things that are saved in my brain. Or like...forgetting that an expression in one language doesn't translate AT ALL in another one. xD

In my part of America we use PT to refer to Physical Therapy when you have a body injury you go to a specialist gym referred by a doctor to see a physical therapist who went to school to be trained to help your body recover and heal.

In the US PT is used in the military for group physical training. Wouldn't be surprised if that's how it came to be used in Korea, too.

Samuel Hinkle especially since there’s JROTC in high schools, it ends up being commonly used pretty quickly from then on so I was surprised Dave wasn’t a little more familiar with it as an American thing

PT is a protected term because Physical Therapists are a medically certified profession.

Samuel Hinkle Yep lots of konglish is derived from military terms American soldiers used during the Korean War- so PT makes a lot of sense to me.

In the UK, cleats are called football boots and the spikes are called studs. We also use PT to refer to the trainer, i.e. Personal Trainer

One thing I love about this these videos is that just because you're a native speaker doesn't mean you know why you use the words you use. Unless you're an etymology nerd like I am I find that non native speakers understand a little bit more about why that's the word to help make it stick whereas a native speaker is like dunno it's always been that word haha

This is true in my experience as well. While I am not what you would call an etymology nerd, I've always been curious as to the why's of word usage. It helps faster learning when studying languages. There's a language center I go to and they always brag about having native speakers as instructors. While that may sound appealing, if they don't understand the language they're teaching then being a native speaker actually becomes less helpful.

i understand because dave’s been in korea for so long, but i’m surprised he didn’t mention stuff like “wanna gym” or “i lift” or the corny slang for arms, like “guns” i feel like “gym” is synonymous with “health” in korean because it’s informal but you can use it as a verb. like “i’m gonna gym today” also a lot of people say core and cardio instead of abs and jogging

Instead of Rep Max, I usually hear, "Whats your: bench/deadlift, squat, Max?" Big 3 is getting into power-lifting. Think average ppl know what those exercise are, but when you get into max big 3 that is getting into power-lifting so they prob won't know The PT is personal trainer or physical therapy, i think u have to assume which one it is in the context it is used I think the personal trainer/ trainer thing is: the personal trainer will prob call himself a personal trainer to distinguish what kind of trainer he is, while clients will prob call them their trainers. I think usually when ppl talk about personal trainer it is associated with gym personal trainer

I'm guessing the Konglish "헬스" probably got imported from the English term "health club" (헬스 클럽?) in the 80s or 90s, when "health club" was a common term (in the US) for a fancy gym/fitness center (eg. "Chicago Health Club" which became/was bought out by "Bally Total Fitness" in the mid-90s), which seemed to focus more on the aerobics classes, pools/spas, Nautilus machines, etc rather than free weights (other than dumbbells), compared to the "gyms" (where the gym rats worked out), which were more serious and weight lifting focused (like Gold's Gym in the 1977 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Pumping Iron") (one of the less ridiculous Chicago Health Club commercial from the 80s: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJK5pqtmhqiLhKM -- compared to the Sheena Easton commercials)

"The Big Three" are the 3 exercises of powerlifting: Squat, Bench, Dead. People can ask "What's your total?" At a powerlifting meet, you win based on totals or how much you do for one of the events.

미국에선 보통 1000 pound club을 3대하고 합니다. 1000 pound club은 보통 그만큼 인정/show off 으로 많이 쓰는 말이죠.

At 7:32, when talking about "3대 몇이야?", in the states we refer to that as maxing (max lift). So in conversation, it would be "What is your ____ (bench, squat, deadlift) max?". This is how me and my friends refer to it, though there might be another expression for the "3대" (big three) that I am not be aware of. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 미국에서 "3대 몇이야?"이라고 물어보면 "What is your ____ (bench, squat, deadlift) max?"이라고 합니다^^ 다른 사람들은 몰라도 저하고 제 주변 사람들 이렇게 표현합니다~

I think they correct term Dave was going for was "squirt" rather than squid. Because "squirt" informally means a person perceived to be insignificant, impudent, or presumptuous. But yeah there's no word for a gym newbie.

PT is used for physical therapy, I’m going to the PT after practice to get wrapped, for example. Trainer is used as stated. I’ve never heard something for your “big 3” people usually just ask, or possibly ask what club you’re in? Most people just ask what’s your max though
