Should specify that this is modern style. Traditionally, we don't cross our feet ever during the jingle dance. We also don't dance backwards or in a complete circle. This dance was based on a dream a father had for a sick daughter. He taught his daughter the dance and she danced and got stronger and became well. The colors of the dress were specific and the the dance steps were also specific because it was a healing dance. No one should be giving you a hard time for doing this dance. Two spirited people were honored by our tribes traditionally because they were considered to be like the sacred pipe. Both the male and female energies of life come together in one body. This was considered special because these people were born in a unique position between men and women and were therefore able to understand things from a unique perspective. This allowed them to be natural bridge builders and peacekeepers between the genders and between many differences that people come across from culture to culture. They are in a position to see the world differently because others respond uniquely to them, giving them both challenges to overcome and an added need to obtain understanding from others. Because they must practice this in their own life, they become very adept in building good relationships between those who would otherwise not get along. This is a type of medicine. They are often associated with unique spiritual understandings as well and use to be sought out at early ages for healing roles for the tribes. Chief Dan Moon at our Sundance gave a teaching about the drum. He said that the women gifted the drum to the men so that the men could obtain the same connection to the Earth that the women have naturally and so to turn the women away from any drum, which is naturally a part of them is wrong. He said one woman can balance out fifteen men on a drum and so they should be welcomed and honored when they come to the drum and not turned away or treated negatively around the drum. That woman may have gone through something that limits her connection to the Earth the same as the men. They may have a physical problem where they cannot have their moon, where they are two spirited, or where there are special circumstances, such as finishing the commitments of a deceased husband because they could not and they took that commitment upon themselves as a way to honor that deceased relative. You don't walk another person's path and you shouldn't assume that typical "rules" can apply to everyone. You also do not hurt your own path or your own spirit by acting in compassion, love, or acceptance, but you will harm yourself by acting out in judgment, discrimination, or by diminishing the purposes of others. I learned during a fast a long time ago, that if others make mistakes during ceremony, that as long as you are doing the right things, you are protected and don't suffer backlash from the mistakes of others. If you are not, it should be assumed that this has a purpose and that there is a strength building lesson for you involved. Everything has a purpose. Don't attempt to control what others do to be spiritually right yourself. There are stages of learning. Just worry about where you are. Allow others to learn as well and honor them for where they happen to be at this time. Don't try to push where you are onto them. Lessons never take well that way. Only the one making the mistake learns the hard lesson after and so you should only worry about what YOU do. Not what others are doing. Make good choices. A small bad decision can leave large damages. Act out of love and you are never wrong. I think you are doing a very good job and I hope you continue doing healing dances, if this is the direction you are pulled in. All my relations.

I would get my big feet tangled and fall to the ground. How you all do this I will never know but the dances are beautiful and heart felt.

He has good foot work! I kinda thought may be they should put more switch dance competitions at the pow-wows... Plus have different ones not just comical ones... but actual ones that like to compete as a best dancer in a switch dance! Oh and I think they need more Team dances competitions...hey! I thought of a good one, this would be cool to make the competition open up to a "Switch Dance as a Team"! I think I Should open one up for this Pow-wow coming up for my Rez on Veterians DAY!
