This video is designed to teach educators and parents everything they ever wanted to know about Autism Spectrum Disorder. It will begin with some basic statistics of autistic children. The next section covers the different types of disorders associated with autism Spectrum, which include PDD-NOS, Childhood disintegrative disorder and others. Next it covers how these children are diagnosed and the process that goes along with it. Continuing, several of the risk factors and causes of the spectrum are described in full detail. Other areas such as teaching strategies and ways for parents and teachers to collaborated are included. Socialization, communication, positive behavior supports with functional behavioral assessments are also different sections. This video also covers how early intervention works with ASD children. This is just one video by a playlist from Teachings in Education with Frank Avella. The videos in the playlist included topics such as classroom management, special education, learning theory, and more.

As a person who is likely autistic themselves, I really like the emphasis put on helping the autistic person themselves, not their surroundings. However, ABA therapy is not in line with this approach at all. It is only focused on making the child *appear* less autistic by making them conform to societal standards, but does nothing to help the child. An example: in the supermarket, the child feels sensory overload and thus they flap their hands (stimming). ABA means the child is only taught they should not flap their hands like that because it's not socially accepted. However, the feelings of the child, that being the sensory overload, and the child's needs that being the ability to stim, are completely ignored and the child is thus made to feel that their own feelings and needs are less important than how they look to others. It is no wonder that this makes autistic people who have been exposed to ABA a lot more likely to have PTSD and suffer from anxiety that results from feeling pressured to "look allistic" (allistic = not autistic). Yes, ABA can be used for good, but given its highly problematic past, the fact that a lot of it is still very problematic and the fact that actually autistic people are against it, I urge you to look for better options if you have an autistic child that needs help conquering the barriers set up by an allistic world and to not promote this type of therapy. Also, although research suggests that ASD is more common in boys, it is now known by experts that it presents differently in girls and that this gender disparity is probably much smaller than research suggests, if it exists at all.

This video is really old, and is not likely all that accurate with some parts. Also yeah ABA fucked me up, I'm still learning to unmask my behaviors and accomodate myself

@@orbismworldbuilding8428 i have to disagree. I am a Hab provider and I work with someone who does struggle when we are out in public and panics. they rock back and forth and sometimes and clap real loud. We don't tell them not to do it because it's not socially accepted. When at home we give them tools how how to recognize when they are feeling overwhelmed and how to redirect and try and stay calm. It has nothing to do with being socially accepted at all. It's about her being able to have control the reason she is doing that is because she is over stimulated because she can't control how she feels, but if even the tools she doesn't have to be "over stimulated" The 10 year old we practice first at home, we role play a few times on what we will be experiencing at the store at the cashier when checking out ( learning to pay with her own money) take a few deep breathes before, we role play on what to say...if it's to loud we know we take a few breaths we repeat things in our head that are soothing, she has something small and soft she can hold in her hand she can rub if needed...but we teach technics to self sooth and overcome her nerves and emotions to help her not get overstimulated. She might still feel her body feeling very over stimulated from time to time but more often enough after a while we gains more control and power over it and does amazing and feels great. That is what ABA or a good ABA person does for her clients. Gives them proper tools. We never tell them "what your doing isn't socially accepted" or make them feel different. that is total none sense.....It's all about giving tools to make them feel comfortable in their skin in a gentle manner. I always tell my clients. "You might have Autism but Autism doesn't define WHO you are!"

Great video for educators to review the topic of autism. I agree that getting to know the student with autism is critical. To help the student, a teacher needs to be aware of behavior triggers. A teacher also benefits from knowing what motivates/engages the child.

People don't understand what we go through as autistic people. I hate when people say hurry up when to them its easy but for me it takes me longer to understand something than the average person my age.

About a third to a half of autistic people do not develop enough natural speech to meet their daily communication needs. Differences in communication may be present from the first year of life, and may include delayed onset of babbling, unusual gestures, diminished responsiveness, and vocal patterns that are not synchronized with the caregiver. Thank you for the information.

What is an atrial septal defect? An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the atrial septum, which is the wall that separates your heart’s two upper chambers (atria). An ASD is a congenital heart defect (something you’re born with) that happens when the septum doesn’t form properly. It’s also called a “hole in the heart.” An ASD allows an abnormal shunt, meaning an abnormal passageway for blood that shouldn’t be happening. Normally, oxygen-rich blood flows from your left upper chamber (atrium) down to your left lower chamber (ventricle), and then out to supply oxygen to your body. An ASD causes some blood from your left atrium to flow in the wrong direction, into your right atrium. Your right atrium contains oxygen-poor blood that needs to cycle through your lungs. So, your right atrium now has extra blood that ultimately goes to the lungs. This wrong-way leak might be minor and not cause any problems. In those cases, the ASD can be left alone without treatment. Other times, it can lead to problems with your heart or lungs. The bigger the ASD, the more likely it is to cause symptoms and need treatment. What are the different types of atrial septal defects? There are four main types of atrial septal defects. They’re defined by their location in the atrial septum. Secundum ASDs are in the middle of your atrial septum. This is the most common type of ASD, (80% of all ASDs). Primum ASDs are in the lower part of your atrial septum. Babies with primum ASDs may also have other heart defects. These include endocardial cushion defect, atrioventricular septal defect, tricuspid valve defects and mitral valve defects. Primum ASDs are commonly linked with Down syndrome. Sinus venosus ASDs are in the upper or lower back part of your atrial septum. This type is linked with defects in the right pulmonary vein or large veins in the heart called superior or inferior vena cava. Unroofed coronary sinus is the rarest type of ASD (less than 1% of all ASDs). It involves a missing or incomplete wall between your coronary sinus (a group of veins connected to your heart) and your left atrium. It's more often linked with another complex congenital heart disease.

I don't like how you say autistics can't make eye contact. Often females, or high-masking females will force themselves and/or learn how to do it or find a way to cope with it. It may be uncomfortable but they can (I suspect I may have autism and I plan on getting diagnosed). Do more research if you have a friend on the spectrum, because they might not be anything like what autism is explained in this video.

Autism doesn't actually 'develop' after birth, i.e. you were born autistic, and you'll live your entire life autistic. It isn't quite that simple, but that's the idea. In many cases with girls, it is discovered when social expectations exceed one's ability to meet them. Some autistic women (and men, though a bit less commonly) get into adulthood before finding out they're autistic; such was the case for me

It’s correlated with the age of men. As men have children later, the rate of ASD has increased, even when the mom is young. But it’s only correlated, doesn’t means that’s the actual cause. We still don’t know the cause of ASD.

Please stop. I'm glad that your son appears to have gotten better, but I can tell you for certain that one of two things happened. Either A, your son was never actually autistic, and whatever was done treated a physical malady (in which case that's wonderful), or B, he is autistic, but he learned to hide those traits in order to fit in or feel accepted (we call it masking). If the latter is true, then you haven't necessarily done him a great service. I can tell you that from personal experience as well as the experience of a few friends of mine.
