If you are in the market for a new FS reel that is hugely capable, check out the Penn Tidal XT. It does everything you need a reel to do! Jansen www.veals.co.uk/product/penn-tidal-xt-long-cast-8000/?aff=27

Another good video! Thank you, Jansen. One thing that needs to be considered is, how the rod is rung. Some rods are rung for multipliers, some are just for fixed spool but fortunately, more rods these days are hybrid rung. You can use a fs reel on a multiplier rod but you cannot us a multiplier on a fs rung rod so always best to check first before buying the reel.

Nice video 👍 i definitely think this is down to personal preference at the end of the day, there is an argument for both sides and at the end of the day its what the individual is comfortable with and what product gives there fishing the most enjoyment. I personally love my casting specials paired up with a t900 and compressor ss for the bristol channel and use fixed spool bait runners for my winter pike fishing 🎣

I have used used fs forever, i have also recently been trying a fathom cs the only benefits really for me in my opinion is no line twist but the risk of overlay and more power on retrieve in strong tide pull. My fs reels are not the most expensive and i have a quite cheap set up actually,they cast a reasonable distance. Its all about finding the right rod, reel and line that suits you and the way you fish

Those modern fixed spools are far too expensive for me. I fish mostly clean ground and still use Abu 6500s which I love casting with. Don’t like casting with fixed spools when I do use them, too heavy and clunky for my liking. Can definitely see the advantage for rougher ground and deep water though.

Have tried a few friends' fixed spool reels and cannot cast them smoothly at all, seems to be snatchy and affects my bait presentation i gound by casting a bait out then a minute later reeling it back in to check it👎 Multipliers on the other hand, have served me just right over the last 20yrs, cast far enough and retrieve over my local patchy ground just nicely👌 Double up for uptiding very nicely too👍

I personally can't cast a fixed spool like I can a multi. It just doesn't happen for me. I can't bend the rod with what feels like having a great clumsy lump on the butt.

Completely agree Jansen, myself I use a power aero xsb, and always keep 2/3 spools in my box incase of heavy line loss and I think the modern slow oscillation and features of fixed spools now far out way the pros compared to the multi 🎣👍

Think only scratching the surface of the subject. I switched back after a similar time and have now learnt about ring wrap (optimum line diameters from leader to main line, have a mono leader to braid leader then braid main line to reduce the difference and reduce ring wrap) playing with shims in FS and having to respool the same line due to tight lines laying unevenly (braid, which I’ve tried on multi’s and don’t like) threads going on drag knobs because I loosen the drag once the rod is in the rest…. Plus a few more reasons. As you’ve said all subjective and depends on your personal fishing. But just to highlight , the grass isn’t always greener. I now fish both FS and mult, depends on the type of fishing I’m doing 😂

In fairness it is a huge subject and one that really seems to divide opinion. A lot of anglers remain set in their ways and there still appears to be some stigma around using a FS. You’ve made some great points there, probably enough to make a part 2, but I’m not sure I’d be able to keep up with the comments! Thanks for your input and tight lines. Jansen

@@VealsMailOrder2898 If you could add a table for diameter lines, leader to mainline, for the optimum diameters not to ring wrap. Best way under tension, including appropriate lb’age, for spooling braid. (Obviously wet braid). A guild for FS maintenance. Not many out there, Alan hawks is good but doesn’t have all. How to keep the small roller free from ceasing and highlight keeping an eye on it, that’s caught me out before on two reels at the same time. Then all that will guarantee me watching part 2. 😂. Best get chat GPT for all the comment replying. (No need to reply to this one 😂)

The gearing on a multi is more efficient. More of your effort goes into retrieving line. Modern multis can be quite forgiving (Penn the exception from experience) as long as you apply power progressively. Also find them better balanced and compact. Used ABU, Akios and Penn. My only fixed spools are for lure work and light estuary use using braids.
@VealsMailOrder2898
@VealsMailOrder2898 8 ай бұрын
The gearing is more efficient, but the retrieve isn’t as fast as a decent fixed spool, especially when the line level drops. Multipliers are more compact but I like the idea of taking spare spools with me that don’t take up too much space and weigh next to nothing. Jansen

It’s possible, but I’m not a fan of braid unless I’m fishing really deep water. I think a lot of anglers like it because it’s strong for its diameter and it doesn’t stretch, but I don’t personally see anything wrong with old school mono. Those Saltiga FS reels look phenomenal! Jansen

@VealsMailOrder2898 . Jansen, the reason I mentioned it is because I bent a spindle on a long cast reel. They can be a little finicky and don't like a load of weed . I have both long and short spindles now. I also carry a multiplier with me. I'm of the generation when rods were 11' 5" and the multiplier was king. I'm at the age where the fixed spool is just that little more friendly to cast.

Fished fixed spools for years. Moved over to multis around 10 years ago. FS are more user friendly.. Multis are more far more robust than FS in my experience, set the mags, wash under the tap and air dry is all that is needed. They are also better for rough ground fishing. It is each to their own, I own both, but if I had to choose. I would choose multis everytime.

A couple of negatives that you didn't mention about big pit reels, they can suffer from butt ringers which more often than not results in a crack off, this is especially so when fishing through or over weed, pumping a ball of weed in causes this, the spindles are very susceptible damage when the spool is out both when fishing and in transit. they also suffer from line twist ( all of them do ) again this can result in crack offs . I've used big pits for donkeys years fishing for carp and continue to do so, but I much prefer the multiplier for shore fishing. Like the fix spool they have their issues but nothing that can't be got around.

Erm.. I think you're wrong on a couple of things Jansen. If you look at the spool on your fixed spool it may be wider in on direction, but hold it in the same plane as the multiplier, it's not as wide. It'll still drop just as much on a given cast as the multi. Second line twist,non existant on a multi, huge issue on a fixed spool. Spindles on a f/s are prone to getting bent when spool is fully forward. Lastly at £400 for a fixed spool, you can get two fathoms for that price, and there's no way the fs is twice as good as a fathom. I use fixed spool for all my coarse work, but it's multis for sea
