She isnt actually beating the horse. She using the long whip to get the horse to move forward more. Its a pointless exercise as all she is getting is resistance. It does question Charlotte's understanding of correct training. Many of the comments from other rider/trainers are hypocritical as I am totally sure very many are equally guilty.

This is what happens when Trainers can't train they become agressive. Trainers aren't regulated and answer to no one until competition leaders step in. In a court case here in California, a man was convicted of animal abuse to a horse with a cattle prod and chains. At the conclusion the Judge made a statement, "It is diffucult to prosecute animal abuse as the law applies to "Trainers" because they claim it is a method of training, and so, this guilty verdict concludes rare". I've seen this sort of horrible practice many times and made me sick to my stomach. My own horse was trained with patience and bitless so for me the contrast is alarming. It is so called trainers like this ruining the sport horse industry.

Judging on the environment, this happened on a casual Tuesday, and since the reaction from the filmed was to laugh and it felt like it was just a regular riding lesson the whipping probably wasn’t a one time kinda thing.

This nothing to what goes on on the continent and in the US and UK in most disciplines. Polo horses are routinely abused. Race horses are whipped while they are racing for no reason other than to make them make more effort. Anyone who works within the industry knows that horses are routinely abused. Drawing blood with their spurs, the bit, causing damage to the back and neck of horses by using rolkur, draw reins, and other apparatus to keep young exuberant and difficult horses under control. The lady talking must not see much training if she says she hasn't seen it before. Charlotte is guilty of stupidity. The rider, the person videoing are just as culpable.

She has been abusing all along and to what degree probably will never be known. It’s not something you could apoligise for, you hurt an animal, but i bet, that just like Andreas Helgstrand, something is still going on, it’s embarrasing for us equestrians. It set’s the whole sport in a bad light, cause they see someone saying (something that’s true), “it’s too normal (continues)…”, and people think, “oh so many people do this?”, while we don’t.

@@lucindra766 I respectfully disagree. Animals are used to make money. When money is involved with animals. Mistreatment is the norm. How many horses die because of horseracing? If that were jockeys dying, the sport would be stopped. Bullfighting? Dog racing? Give me examples of when an animal is not being abused for profit? The usual trope always rolled out is they are well looked after. The evidence is entirely different I'm afraid. Animals should not be used in sport or for entertainment.

While your comment holds truths, your attitude is entirely ignorant. I have ridden and owned horses my whole life. Currently, I own 2 retired racehorses.. Yes, the industry they came from is abusive. But owning and riding them at their liberty? Thats entirely different. Both my mares are a testimony to that. Humans and equines were meant to work together. A willing partnership between equine and human is not abuse. However, in today's elite levels of modern day dressage, animal abuse is normalized. Do not make assumptions that horse riding as a sport is all the same when you clearly have no understanding of it at a fundamental level.

One would suggest you were not in a situation where abusing an animal for performance and gain is required. Clearly you have a love and kinship with your animals and I have not suggested that all people who ride horses or indeed rescue horses are inherently abusive. I agree that many animal sports are abusive. Some disciplines of equestrian sports are more prone to have a prevalence of abuse (horse racing, the “Big Lick” Tennessee Walkers, similar methods used on Saddlebreds in Saddle Seat training and competition, etc.), and it seems like even the usually non abusive horse sports, like hunter/jumper training and competing become abusive when these riders are competing in the top levels. It seems like once the riders are able to ride top talented horses and are able to compete for large amounts of prize money in the big show jumping Grand Prix and also the professional hunter riders’ International Hunter Derbies, and other big money hunter classes which also have huge payouts, the riders lose whatever empathy they had and will do whatever it takes. Obviously, that is awful. However, I’ve competed my own horses in multiple “lower level” competitions, in different disciplines of jumping classes for MANY years now. I have NEVER abused my horses or ridden with trainers who use abusive training methods. I am careful about the number of competitions I enter my horses in, so they aren’t over-jumped. I also limit my training at home to once a week low jumping exercises. I am competitive, and there are special classes I’d like to qualify for, but I put the horses first. I stick to my schedule to not over work my horses, and they all get the best treatments. Chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, etc. My horses, whether I’m competing them or have retired them from competing, live better lives than most people do!

But as far as what I have got to know, she is perhaps one of the greatest players of this sport, now the way she was whipping that horse, there is no doubt in my mind that this is a common practice, if something like this happens at the very top, I can only imagine what would happen usually to the horses.
