Well, it's simply a change of style. Previous designs were much closer to what you might see in most shonen (action) anime/manga with sharp edges that gives them, well... edge and therefore badassery (because edge doesn't mean bad). Here we see a lot more western (modern) cartoon look, where you kinda see those characters kinda look badass and kinda look like they came from a show that focuses on comedy.

as soon as i first watched this video, i tried making OC's for RWBY ( to be fair, thats kinda all i do. i did it on the Heartless Video as well) but i only got 2 members done, but here are the ideas, feel free to judge Team G.R.E.Y: Greyson: based off of the Grim Reaper. despite the fact that sounds more edgy than a shard of glass, he's actually really nice and can open Portals. i don't know what his weapon would be ( besides just beings RWBY's scythe) Rusty: Based off of Aladdin, usually the funny guy and uses a Scimitar. i kinda decided to make his Semblance just be " he make make someone, including himself, insanely lucky" in reference to the Genie

I like how Gold and Obelisk's color are sort of inverted. Gold has a mostly yellow pallette with purple eyes, while Obelisk has purple as the main color in his pallette with light yellow hair. It kinda helps sell the idea that they're opposites, at least characteristically

These are beautiful, I love Laurel's tonfa!! They're some of my favourite weapons so it's awesome to see them get represented! In terms of Obelisk Down's name, perhaps a good alternative would be Obsidian? It's another dark stone and has a bit more of a cultural association with colour.

I met one of the environment designers for earlier volumes of the show a few years back. I asked them what was up with the weapon design and they flat out told me it just needed to look cool, no one was thinking about whether or not it were physically possible. Love your art!

I think my favourite thing about any and all of your art is the asymmetrical outfits. I have a habit of symmetry ONLY, but Gold had asymmetry, and Laurel has it with her hip cape thing, and your other designs and speedpaints too. Thats something I struggle with..

I love these redesign videos because first of all I literally love every artstyle you ever had. It's like looking at paintings of different eras. They're different but all beautiful. The second reason is that I always feel so bad when I'm redesigning an Oc bc I think that "true artists" are good enough to create a perfect character design in one setting So seeing my favourite artist redesigning his characters (and kind of roasting his previous designs) really help me with my constant redesign fear.💕
