I'll do you one better: I READ it. I recently wanted to finish up the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Since I never had a chance back when I was a kid due to not having internet access. Since I'm more of a manga person now, I did some research and ended up reading through Season 0 and Memories of the Pharaoh

I have watched it and it's not even that dark it's censored compared to the manga. I still remember that theme park episode where Anzu was catching on to yami and realizing that yugi seemed different while also thinking about the voice she heard in her job that was saving her while she was blindfolded.

Season 0 didn't really make the distinction between "ancient pharaoh" and "the manifestation of Yugi's repressed anger"; at times it was hard to tell, with the only hints being the occasional Egyptian motif, like the ankhs that seems to come from Yugi, not magicked into existence. Even the original phrase on the box hinted at the possibility it was just "the power of darkness" giving his repressed emotions time to get revenge. However, it DOES continue into what we know as Season 1, and even then he's often called Yami Yugi, so both Yami Yugi and "the pharaoh" fit.

In the manga when Yugi goes to save his Grandpa from Kaiba, he is met with a number or challenges before dueling him. This is when Duel Monsters was actually introduced, and the concept became very popular with the readers it was decided that from then on Duel Monsters became the focus.

Correction: duel monsters was one of many games featured early on, with kaiba being a one off villain, but since readers loved the game so much, Takahashi decided to expand on it, revolving the plot around it and make kaiba a main antagonist.

They changed a lot of the games from the original manga to the anime versions. In the first chapter Yami's Battle with Ushio over the money was done using a knife to stab the money while having it on your hand. The anime changed it to the pick a card on the roof. Both are rather dark concepts.

Also, in the chapter with the serial killer, he actually burned to death as the punishment game instead of it being an illusion like in the anime. Not only that, but Kaiba got the idea for his Death-T 4 punishment game from when he lost to Yugi in the first Duel Monsters game they played together. The anime makes that first duel a draw so where he got the inspiration for that particular punishment game is left unexplained.

S0 Yugioh is actually very cool. I really love the old anime style. And the little deadly games the evil spirit creates are always fun to watch. Shame it is only 27 ep I would have loved to see a version of the story with this old style. And that opening with the song and all is top tier.

It really makes sense too because "Yugioh" means "King of Games". The Pharaoh was a trickster, the master of games, so he challenged evildoers in all sorts of twisted competions, from playing cards, golf, DnD and so on, to prove his 10001 game IQ.

Fun fact, the Duel Monsters anime actually references the manga and season 0 anime battle boxes in the Kaiba Corp Grand Prix filler season as the version of Solid Vision that the Schreider family developed which was beaten by the Kaiba Corp Solid Vision Duel Arenas.

I always love Season 0. My favorite shadow game is the time Kiaba helped little Yugi against the three Witches cause Yugi had a cold and couldn't play. The Witches had only 2 cards out of their 3 cards, which Kiaba gave it to them and Kiaba still won with Blue Eyes

I have recently been just about obsessed with finding the full raw episodes of season 0, and even tho there are uploads of the raw episodes, they unfortunately have the outro song cut out. The only full capture of the series with every detail I know of is the TV-Nihon sub, but they have the subtitles hardcoded, and some of the episodes are broken when converted.

Sadly, that is what it is. That the people behind the IP don't want anything to do with this anime(in addition to being unsuccessful in japan and unknown in the west until years later) means that it isn't particularly well maintained. At least the movie is available in semi-decent quality. Probably from the fact that movies have higher asset-quality to begin with and that it released a decent bit later.

I actually managed to get one of those first manga at a book store when I was like 13-15. Still have it somewhere. Yugi brutally beat and hospitalized several punks with a Yoyo, then trapped a kid’s soul in a soul-devouring jar for a cursed dragon game, and the final part of the book had a Dnd-style game he was playing with his friends and Bakura, who I believe planned to soul trap them in the game pieces to kill them with the final boss. Sadly the manga I owned only had the first part of that particular story

It was originally meant to be a horror story focused around different games and what happens to the losers. But when Duel Monsters (or Wizards & Monsters as it was originally called) came into the picture, that became the more popular part of the story, thus Takahashi and Shonen Jump decided to put more focus on the card game

Thing is Season 0 is still a watered down version of its manga counterpart. In the manga, the shooter at the restaurant Tea worked at didn’t hallucinate himself catching fire like he did in the anime where it was a metal breakdown. He actually caught on fire in the manga. Hank even electrocuted people and possibly killed them for all we know.

In the manga, instead of picking up cards on the side of a building, Yami and Ushio played a game where they stabbed yen while it was on their hand and whatever was stabbed could be kept. Ushio ended up attempting to stab Yami with the knife and so Ushio was given the penalty of the illusion of leaves being money. The more you know

Even in the early arc of Duel Monsters Atem punished the villains by mind crushing them, or sending their more evil essence to the shadow realm, kid friendly version of hell basically. It was a punishment one time in season 0 as well but Atem stopped most likely due to being influenced by Yugi and his friends being friendly and teaching him to have morality. So the mind crushing and other penalties stopped and he became the compassionate Pharoah we know him as

My favorite is the one where Yugi and that robber at Tea's work play a game where they can only use one finger and the guy says he'll use his pointer finger to pull the trigger on the gun and Yugi says he'll only use his thumb and then he uses a lighter and sets the guy on fire. That and the chicken game where they stab stacks on money that are on top of their hands.

This season was so chaotic, I remember some paid actors trying to beat up a kid in a superhero costume, then Yami sets those guys on fire and the kid and his father don't care. Then there was also the time when Jonouchi got kidnapped by his old friend, they try tasing him, but then Yami shows up and tases them all (or you could say he caused one of them to put his taser in a puddle and since it was raining the electricity spreaded through the water) and last but not least a criminal going to Burger King (where Anzu/Tea worked) and holding Anzu/Tea at gunpoint. Then for some reason he plays a game with Yami, and sets himself on fire.
