Unimog 404 - will it start?

Hey everyone!
I felt it was time to see if it was possible to fire up the terrible-looking diesel engine in the old, Abandoned UNMOG 404 project, that we brought here, this winter.

This old 404 was swapped for a Diesel at some point in it's life.
Unfortunatly, i was shortly after, taken apart. and then abandonned all together. and just left sitting outside.
It ended up taking quite a bit of effort, all around, to get this engine to make some noise.

If need to start a diesel truck and have no starter, choke up one or two of the wheels then jack up one rear wheel. And on that wheel wind a long strap about 4 - 5 times with the end coming down towards the rear. Engage the gear and put it in second and arrange to pull that strap with another vehicle, the spinning rear wheel will get that diesel engine to turn enough for a start.☘

Back in the early 70s my first real job was as a salesman with our local MB dealer. We sold cars, the 309d buses and UNIMOG and I was given the buses and UNIMOG to sell. My aunt had bought a UNIMOG to handle farm chores, mostly cutting grass, and I eventually ended up with it. It was a most impracticable vehicle foe everyday use but it was unique with PTOs front/rear, an air compressor and a rear mounted winch.

I too have an army truck (dump) 6 x 6 1990 AM General that I use to haul dirt and manure. the part about spending money struck home because it has cost me more than I anticipated, fortunately there is a mechanic in the area that is willing to work on it. so whatever you call your channel, as long as you post it where I can find it, I'll be watching!

Also as long as you're careful not to let it get sucked in, you can wet a rag with some gas and hold it over the intake instead of using ether. I guess ether is fine but I'm personally not a fan of it for these little diesels. I've heard of wrist pins getting broken like that but idk how true that is.

If it's possible for our 309D with the same engine I think it will be possible with the unimog. But the turbo isn't easy to find....
