Great work . Just got my 421 1982 and work goes on . When moving I can feel and hear clear metal to metal hitting and looks like the bolts in front and back of the cap aren't there . Your video shows proved it . Again , Thanks indeed for the episode .

Wow a great restoration series of one of the most versatile machines ever built by the human kind and you are giving it what it deserves most. Just stumbled upon your channel and immediately fell in love with it. Love the way you present the stuff and keep up the good work. Greetings from sri lanka 🇱🇰

I can see why you'd think that. it dose actually look like it. But no, it's not, it's really just the housing, for a regular oil filter. Does your Unimog have the 40 or the 45hp engine? I've got a 45hp 421 and it has a radiator that's higher than the front grill, so maybe yours isn't original. Also I can't remember if you checked the return filter in the hydraulic fluid reservoir? They're really prone to failure and it would destroy your new pump.
@KJOff-Road2 жыл бұрын
This one dose have the 45hp "OM615" Engine. and you are absolutely correct, it is indeed the wrong radiator in there. And yeah, i did check the filter. but i actually don't remember if that was ever in the video? Anyway, i didnt replace it, but just made sure it was good enough, for me to test the system. but it will all be serviced/replaced, when it's put back together. Thanks for watching!
@humbucker00762 жыл бұрын
@@KJOff-Road In the December I bought 45hp 421 myself, so I already got a bit into the swing of things too. Basically had to build a new wiring harness to be able to test it further. Realized the final frame rail with the hitch was rotten through under the paint so I still have to replace that among a lot of other stuff. Sadly mine has the front PTO taken out along with everything else vaguely relating to the snowblower it Ines had, i.e. windscreen washer fluid pump, beacons, working lights, Schmidt attachment plate and most annoyingly the front PTO. Besides that my hydraulic pump also seems to be ruined. There was a whole in the tank and the filter was missing completely. Haven't assembled the engine far enough to test it yet. I also build another solution for the filter but haven't tested that yet neither. So I'll have to do something with that pump too -sadly. But as far as the filters go: there recently was a thread in the forum's, that the after market filters for these hydraulic tanks burst even under normal use, so you might just wanna throw a standard inline filter in there or something like that.
@KJOff-Road2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it's a good project you got your hands on. If you still have the PTO output on your transmission, then getting your PTO drive back, souldn't be too complicated. Although it is goint to cost a little bit, (Like everything else on a Unimog) but the shafts and other parts are still available out there. Also, thats a good tip on the hydraulic filter. i'll have to look into that. Your pump is going to be a slightly bigger issue, if it needs replacing. as it is a bit special, there are not many of those pumps around. Personally, i was playing around with the idea of ditching the engine-driven pump. and instead replace my rear PTO drive, with a seperate pump, that would then be driven bu the transmission. and therefor, only when you needed the pressure. and it would also make it possible to fit a bigger, some efficient pump. but that solutions has it's downsides as well. like losing your rear PTO. and the pressure stopping, every time you press the clutch. Anyway, It's good to know others are working to keep these old mog's alive.!
@humbucker00762 жыл бұрын
@@KJOff-Road As far as the front PTO goes, that’s not really a priority for me right now anyways. Neither do I have a use for it, nor the money. Furthermore, my Unimog is registered as a 3.5T truck, so it can be driven with a car license meaning every kilo saved is a good one. The pump is indeed a big issue. It’s something I am probably going to tackle a bit later in my restauration, but one that will be hard. There are some companies where you can send in these pumps and the make custom replacements/ combine old ones to make them work - But I ain’t got one and a half grand for that. There is a video on KZbin buy a guy called “MaxMoritz” / Optimog with a modern pump on an old compressor. I think the hardest part is making the coupling work and the size constrains. In a 421 the latter can be worked around by rerouting a lot of lines, but the pump is also used in 411 Unimogs and they are even tighter. Talking about these compressor/hydraulic combis some U411 drivers mount electric clutches to them, to turn them off when not needed. However, their Unimogs don’t have air assist breaks so it’s just for trailers and Hydraulics anyways on a U421 the compressor part is needed all the time, so. Then there is the way it’s done on the later 421s - I think 421.124 and 421.125: They have the air compressor combined with the less power-hungry power steering pump if they even have power assist. The main hydraulic pump then is mounted to the left of the engine and belt driven. You can fit more modern and bigger Pumps there, although you may have to turn down the width of the fan partway on the outside - which shouldn’t be a big issue when not using full power on the PTO whist standing still for a long time, because everything is oversized anyways. Maybe that set up could also be combined with a magnetic clutch. Another, completely different solution I have seen on 411 Unimogs is to completely ditch the mechanical driven air compressor and hydraulic pump and put electric pumps inside the frame with extra tanks and filters. I wouldn’t do that with the pneumatics part on the 421 but it could be a cheap, and good solution, if you don’t want to drive hydraulic motors or log splitters. As far as my Unimog goes I probably can get it back together enough next weekend to maybe make a small test drive. I’m still on not sure how I’m gonna move on from there. I need to disassemble a lot of the rear frame anyways to get it welded and replace the final crossmember. So I’m on the fence whether I also pull the whole cab off and repaint the whole frame and axles because the previous owner did a horrible job on that using 3 in 1 paint. However, time is an issue, because I only get to work on it every other weekend sadly and I can’t do that in my own workspace. And then it starts: if you have the cab pulled, you might as well do work on that - but I am not a good welder, so I need favours and there is still the space problem. Besides that: I just did the electrics, and I don’t really fancy taking all that out again. So maybe I would just take the cab off, get the necessary stuff welded and repaint it completely from the outside and rework some places on the inside as that is generally relatively well done. It's a rabbit whole. I’ve gone from: it probably just needs eclectics and some front fenders to be drivable again and then it can be restored piece by piece while driving it around every now and then to I would really like to take it apart to the last nut and bolt - but that is expensive and really hard if you can work on it every other week.
