Hello, I'm going to repaint my Unimog frame black as it was originally. It looks nice with the blue cab mine has. Some of the early 411 Unimogs also came with a red chassis. That would look really nice in combination with a light grey ("LKW Grau"/"Kiesel Grau" are the Unimog colours I think). It would be typically and stylish old Mercedes truck colour combination. And as for the cut out in the rear off your frame: wasn't your cab originally orange/yellow? So I would guess it had a snowplough? So maybe there was a Pump for a gritter on the back pto. Another interesting Unimog tip: you can e mail the Unimog museum, tell them your chassis number and ask for the data card for your Unimog. They email you a copy for free and it contains all the specs/options your Unimog was ordered/build with. Great to know the real build dates and which gearboxes it had, etc.
@KJOff-Road2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for that tip! I didn't know they had access to that data. that could actually be useful, and fun to have.
@humbucker00762 жыл бұрын
@@KJOff-Road Yes for one it's interesting because you can take guesses for what purpose it was ordered through the options checked. But also mine had the name of the first owner so I could contact them and talked to them. They had it from '68 to around 2010. On the other hand it's also helpful because it will tell you exactly which gearbox g or f etc. So it makes it easier being sure about these things too.
@SluSharkND2 жыл бұрын
That is quite the machine, even deep down and dirty! If you are keeping the cab the same colour, then I think the frame and engine in orange would look great. Otherwise you can't go wrong with Team Army Trucks Green!

Love Unimogs! The RAF Harrier force used them extensively, great for moving the aircraft and the associated support equipment. We even inherited one from the Argentinians after they went home in 1982. However, it can have an unfriendly side, 2 young vehicle maintenance fitters took one out for a test drive, the senior of the 2 was showing off, he got the vehicle up to a reasonable speed and stamped on the brake! The nose dived and the Mog flipped over, both lads were killed. Very sad.

hi, nice Project and good videos, keep it coming! FYI, these old engines tend to fry their valve stem seals over time and, being naturally aspirated, start to suck through the brittle seals and burn their own oil when warm. Taking off the cylinder head, clean all out, lap the valves and fit new gaskets and seals might make a huge improvement. I once bought a 1968 406D Mercedes truck for next to nothing because the engine was smoking so much that it was believed to be shot. These little jobs, together with fine-tune the inyection -timing, solved all the problems and the engine ran for some 15 more years almost smoke free!!!!

For a barn find, the UNIMOG is not in bad condition. Just a few parts and some love. I'm really interested in this series. This was my introduction to your channel and I am delighted. But mabye you wanna get out of the box of boring and get the frame in bright yellow and body in bright red and axels and springs in black or something. It always looks neat when the different parts has contrasting colours so you see what every part is and does. But dont go over board and make it in 10 different colours you do not want a clown car (or mabye you do?). I think that max 3 coulors is enough. Great to see some work on one of tese machines. On the subject of the cut out portions of the rear frame and hitch assembly, it seems plausible that may have been done simply to allow more space to install or remove non standard pto shaft retaining devices. Perhaps the shaft commonly stopped in a poor position and it became a source of frustration. As far as paint colors, Field or olive drab green would look great of course!

Keep up this good video's, I really like it!

Do you have a video of repairing your fuel tank? I am trying to find a dip tube for the tank on a 1975 (406) for the fuel system. Before I picked it up the previous owner installed an 12 volt fuel pump on the exterior of the fuel tank - I don't think that is what Mercedes Benz installed originally.
@KJOff-Road Жыл бұрын
I'm doing a bit of work to the tank, in part 9 of this series. but i'm not doing much to the tube, though. And you are right, it's not meant to have a 12v pump. There is a mechanical lift pump, on the engine. And also, there are several different tanks for them, so the tube that you need, is going to depend on what tank you have on yours.
@rongray4118 Жыл бұрын
@@KJOff-Road Indeed! I am thinking that Expedition Import sold me the incorrect tank to the 406 - but I will figure it out and get it to seal. It has 5400 hours on the meter so the lift pump is probably worn out. Time to get on the hunt and find that as well.
