I Have to get rid of the "Abandoned" UNIMOG 404

Unimogs are close to my heart, back in the 1970's they were used extensively by the SADF, their chassis was used to create mine protected armored vehicles of all sorts, our field worshop had a few which were 'sandbagged' and had no doors or windshields, we did maintenence, swapped engines and running gear under a tin roof over a concrete pad, in the middle of the dense african bush, great memories.

I wonder if you would be happy with such a great vehicle in Australia. My experience travelling in Australia was, that people are madly obsessed with sitting on 100km/h no matter what vehicle you drive. I was stunned when I got aware of the fact that Unimogs and other vehicles who are not made for high speed often get costly modifications, different transmissions, engines or/and oversized tyres to speed them up - and subsequently become less reliable.

Of course I would be, plenty of people buy Australian ex army unimogs, just, none quite so old. Speed isn't the whole of any vehicles experience. Not all engine swaps or modifications are just to reach or maintain 100kph. Australia has some harsh conditions. Some parts for old vehicles, and their engines, just aren't readily available. The simplest solution to keep enjoying a vehicle, is to repower it with something more serviceable. I have to wonder how many people you actually spoke to regarding it, or, if you just came to the conclusion based on your own assumptions?

Классно. УАЗ "буханка" есть. А вот неудобство УНИМОГ это ничто по сравнению с посадкой в кабину ГАЗ 66. Они родственные машины. Там даже селектор переключения коробки передач за спиной у водителя расположен. Так что управлять им довольствия нет. Сейчас правда ставят на них японские коробки, но тогда это было издевательством.

Question: Which one of these Mercedes-Benz DOHC Diesel engines would fit in an old UNIMOG: OM604, OM605 or OM606?!? Essentially inline 4, 5 or 6 cylinder engines.

He said the Unimog had a 6 cylinder inline petrol engine and was swapped with a 5 cylinder inline diesel.
