still remember , me and 5 other fellas in the back of one of these during my draft in the late 80's. We just came back from an exercise at 2 AM and took a shortcut over a tank track flooded with water. At some spots it was almost 2 meters deep.The mud flew over the flatbed where we sat, the Unimog was at least half a meter over its axle in the mud but it kept running! Amazing offroad capability these little trucks have.

Nice. I ran a Wildland fire truck unit based off Unimogs here in the PNW US. Theyre SO fun to drive and use out in the bush. I wish they were easier to find and own here in the US and I wish we got the more modern U500 Dokas and espescially the 1300s/1500s, but I sure was lucky to get to use them as much as I did. The overhead would de-mob a whole unit of brush engines when we'd show up because we could get the trucks and foam/water into mostly unreachable places for the other trucks. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Cheers.

Lovely old unimog Something a old truck driver told me here in the USA. When his rig would roll black smoke like that. He would put transmission fluid in at his next fill up. It would smoke just as black but after about 1/4 or 1/2 tank no more black smoke and the diesel would have more power.

These were never the most aesthetically beautiful trucks ever manufactured... but their beauty is in their practical CAPABILITIES. These trucks off-roading abilities are legendary among the 4X4 community. This goes doubly, for former service members who have spent time in Germany, and have seen what the German Army does with it's Mogs. They aren't fast, but they ARE just about the most sure footed beasts around, off-road. Lots of torque, and their PTO's give them lots of interesting abilities that other 4X4's wish they had. Amazing trucks, and far more nimble than their height would suggest.
@ohauss3 жыл бұрын
They are beasts any way you put it. There are versions you can put on rails and they'll happily pull rail cars (or in the case of the Netherlands, subway cars. They have 'mogs who'll go into the tunnels and pull out the cars in case of power failure)

These older unimogs are great old tools weve had 2 agri versions of this age . Simple machines to work on the only problem we found was not much hydraulic oil pressure to run modern farm machinery . But it coulda bn an age thing as we did change filters oil cleaned gauzes etc they just seemed to lack flow . But apart from that we power harrowed topped had them on a big grass mower for cutting silage grass . They ran rakes tedders etc well . Even lifted our 4 furrow knevnland reversable ploughs up . And managed to pull them .

Very impressive 👍 but yes, i can see how it would struggle with newer/larger hydraulic equipment. i have noticed that the pump is rather small. and it dose seem to have limited flow.

Could you answer some questions about unimog. looking at A a FLU419 which I guess is a 406 chassie with a 5.7 diesel Mercedes. are they known to have fuel priming issues that are difficult to prime thank you
@KJOff-Road2 жыл бұрын
The FLU419 is indeed the same as a 406. with just a few modifications made, for the US market. and they were then sold through the Freightliner brand. and yes, they also the the good old OM352, 5.7L Engine. They don't generally have issues with priming. but these boys are getting old, and i have seen several times that dirt and rust flakes from the tank, will clog up the different filters. stopping the fuel flow. First filter is on the suction pipe, inside the tank. (Sitting right over the tank drain-plug) The next filter, is a little inline filter, located under the cab, right below the passenger. and last, you have the two main filters, right on the front of the engine. if you make sure fuel can get through all the filters, its just a matter of pumping the hand-pump/Priming-pump (Located on the engine) once the pump is "Hard" they will usually fire up just fine. Of course, there is also a little feed pump, that could be bad. but i personally havent seen that happen. Hope that helps. Good luck with it!
@johncollings67992 жыл бұрын
@@KJOff-Road So I understand that but the PTO shafts that come out the transmission the transmission compared to the 406 and the FLU419 are they different or is there a shaft output available for the 419
@KJOff-Road2 жыл бұрын
Well, i haven't personally worked on a FLU419. There is only a very small handfull of those, here in Europe. Most of them are in the US. So i'm actually not entirely sure what gearbox they have. There was a handfull of different ones for them, back then. but i'm pretty sure the one in the FLU dose not have the outputs for the PTO drives. Though most of these parts are more or less interchangeable on the 406-series. However, to swap the gearbox as a whole, is a Very big job. and requires you to remove pretty much everything else from the truck.

Dear S.E.H Try a smaller Unimog with the old OM 636 engine. Then you would never criticise the "power" of a 421. In the old Unimogs the engine power is always limited by purpose, also the main gearboxes and the tires usually do not allow to drive fast enough at least for common traffic. Best regards, luck and health.
